Document - Document, article, In Flanders Fields - Digest of World Reading Nov 1960 (H25), 1960
An interesting article from the Digest of World Reading about Canadian John McCrae and his famous poem "In Flanders Field". It tells of his war service and how the poem was published in Punch on 8 December 1915. He was in the medical service when he succumbed to pneumonia in January 1918. The journal article was sent to the Legacy Co-Ordinating Council who sent it to the archive. The notation H25 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. Collected by an earlier archive committee which shows the poem was important to the Legatees. The poem was the inspiration for the torch emblem of Legacy.White A4 photocopy x 3 pages of an article published in 1960 and a letter on Legacy Co-ordinating Council letterhead from 1969.Handwritten H25 in red pen. Photograph - Paul Hogan at Julian's Lodge 1973
Julian Newton-Brown arrived at Falls Creek in 1957. He had studied Pharmacy at Melbourne University. After developing a love for the mountains, Julian moved to Mt. Beauty and then Falls Creek. He worked for the SEC in the test laboratory at Rocky Valley reading weather instruments. By working several jobs, Julian was able to build a small lodge of 10 beds named “Arundel”, located at 18 Slalom Street, Falls Creek. The lodge is now the “Elk at Falls”. Arundel prospered and Julian extended it to include 32 beds and changed its name to "Julian’s” in 1961. When alcohol restrictions were eased in Falls Creek, Julian built a night club which he called “Big Julian’s” and later “THE MAN”. When Julian and his wife Beth retired and left Falls Creek, their son took over running the lodge. An active community man, Julian was a member of the Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce, a member of the SES, a stakeholder in Falls Creek, an author and a documentary maker. Julian Newton-Brown died in May 2020. In 2003 when this flyer was published operation of Julian's Lodge transferred from Julian and is wife Beth to their son Charlie Brown, a former Australian Champion and World Cup skier and his wife, Bena. This item is significant because it gives details of an important lodge at Falls Creek, Victoria.A black and white image of Paul Hogan, John Cornell and other people sitting near fire place in the dining room at Julian's Lodge in 1973. Paul Hogan and a group of actors and film crew spent several days in Falls Creek filming a Winfield cigarette commercial, in which they were portrayed as ski instructors. According to Julian Brown's book "Falls Creek - How it came to be", they brought in a truck load of polystyrene balls to create snow. The commercial was in 16mm for television and 36 mm for cinemas. It took them three days to shoot a six second scene in the dining room at Julian's lodge.julian's lodge, julian newton brown, falls creek ski lodges, accommodation falls creek, charlie brown -

Plaque - Memorial plaque, P.J. King, Memorial Chapel of Saint Peter, 1917
The Chapel of Saint Peter was dedicated on September 6, 1917 by His Grace the Archbishop of Melbourne. The total sum necessary for the construction of the chapel was collected by the L.H.L.G and the chapel stands as a tribute to the honoured memory of the officers and men of the Mercantile Marine who lost their lives in the Great War. Note that the building was erected to commemorate fallen Mercantile Marines in the Great War before the war was concluded. This shows that the war and death toll thus far was significant enough at this point that it was having a serious impact on Australian society. Highly significant as the identifier of the raison d'etre for the chapel building and the massive fundraising effort made by the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild to fund the building prior to the end of the Great War.Large rectangular engraved brass plaqueMEMORIAL CHAPEL OF SAINT PETER / THIS CHAPEL WAS BUILT WITH FUNDS / COLLECTED BY THE LADIES HARBOUR LIGHTS GUILD/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND TO THE COMMEMORATE THE/ BRAVE AND FAITHFUL MEN / OF THE MERCANTILE MARINE WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/GREAT WAR / THEY ARE TOO NEAR TO BE GREAT / BUT OUR CHIDREN SHALL UNDERSTAND/ WHEN AND HOW OUR FATE/ WAS CHANGED AND BY WHOSE HAND/ ERECTED 1917 At the bottom manufacturer's name and address: P.J. Badge, Liberty League, C 1918
This badge appears to have been produced late in 1918 when the Liberty League in Victoria was most active. Full details on the Liberty League have not been found but it seems the league was founded in response to the perceived restrictions on personal liberty and rights imposed in Australia as a result of Government policies and laws during World War One. By November 1918 the Liberty League had 80,000 members and there were many campaigners touring Victoria to recruit more members. It is not known how long the Liberty League existed in Australia. This badge is retained for display purposes as a memento of a World War One organization in AustraliaThis is a metal badge with a blue painted rim, an outer yellow circle with red printing and an inner blue circle with a cream-coloured letter ‘L’.
