It includes a chair made from a flat piece of wood threaded through with a cable attached to pulleys, which move people or goods up or down heights such as the lighthouse, where it was used for painting the lighthouse and other tasks. This piece of cloth came from the Fletcher Jones factory in Warrnambool. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) served in the First World War and in the 1920s set up as a travelling hawker selling drapery in the Western District of Victoria. In 1924 he leased three shops in Liebig Street, Warrnambool and in 1928 he moved to the Koroit/Liebig Streets intersection with his Man’s Shop. He manufactured men’s clothing on site. In 1931 he moved the business into a new two-storeyed building on the site. He opened a Fletcher Jones shop in Melbourne in 1946 and in 1948 a factory was established in Warrnambool. In 1951 the business of Fletcher Jones and Staff was established. The company expanded and became known Australia- wide, firstly for the production of men’s trousers and later both men’s and women’s clothing. By 2011 the Warrnambool factory was sold and the company was dissolved. This piece of material is of interest as an example of the cloth used in the Fletcher Jones factory in Warrnambool. This pair of jeans comes from the Fletcher Jones factory in Warrnambool. The lectern was gifted by Mary Georgina Howard Northcote in December 1907 for the Siddeley Street mission (see Annual Report 1907: list of gifts for the new institute page 8). It was moved to the St Peter Chapel, Flinders Street, and has been in use ever since. Mary nee Reynell in Cheltenham, England, was the wife of Edward Northcote, ex master mariner and general manager of the Adelaide Steamship Company between 1899 and 1926, before his death on 4 November 1926. Edward Northcote was the cousin of Henry Stafford Northcote, Governor General of Australia (1904-1908). Lord Northcote laid the stone of the Siddeley Street Seamen's Institute on Tuesday 5 February 1907. Mary died in December 1932, in her will she made a donation of £25 to the Mission. As it was moved to the St Peter chapel when the Flinders Street Mission opened, it was added to the 1917 list of gifts.The Mission to Seafarers Victoria has been in operation for over 150 years in Victoria although experiencing many name and location changes. Support and patronage by Governors general and State governors was key to official recognition of the work of the Mission.The current site at 717 Flinders Street is the most enduring and many artefacts from previous locations have been relocated to this site. This lectern underscores the relationship between the Mission and notable Victorians.The head of the lectern is supported by three wooden cross sections each engraved with a criss-crossing leaf pattern. The legs of lectern have a similarly carved decorative panel forming an arched shape. Each corner of the panel has gum leafs and nuts carved into it. Amy Isobel Huxtable was born in 1919 and moved to Bendigo in her teens. She completed her education at Bendigo High School before attending the Bendigo Business College. She then worked as a copywriter for local radio station 3BO for 8 years. She then moved to Melbourne to work in advertising before travelling to England in 1950 to study the new medium of television, still not available in Australia. In 1953 she returned to Bendigo and became the Eats Social Editor of the Bendigo Advertiser. This role led to a permanent position as the Women's Social Editor and later the editor for all Women's Affairs. Initially she wrote under the pen-name "Toora" but later used her own name. She remained in this position until her death in 1980. Throughout her life she was heavily involved in the development of women's roles and their status in life. They had 5 children: Geoffrey David (1913-1970), Beryl (1916-1976), Gwynneth (1917-1997), Isabel Lillian (1921-1997) and Shirley Inez (1928-1968). Personal communication from Laurie Newton, Beryl's daughter: Dave and Beryl initially lived in East Melbourne after they married. Geoffrey, Beryl and Gwynneth were born in East Melbourne. They subsequently moved to Louise Avenue, Mont Albert and Isabel may have been born while they were there. Later they purchased 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. Shirley was born after they moved to Barton Street. The children attended Mont Albert Central School. The photo may have been taken in the back yard of 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. This is a wood stereoviewer with folding handle The viewer has two lenses at a set distance in the wooden hood which is lined in green velvet. The pictures can be moved vertically on the slide holder in order to focus them. These devices became popular in the middle of the 19th century. This is probably a Holmes type stereoscope, named after its inventor, Oliver Wendell Holmes (1860). Velvet lined view mask with engravwed patterns. Students attended Sunday School classes at the Kergunyah Presbyterian Church. Sunday school was held in a little 16 foot square wooden building which came from Rocky Valley after it was no longer needed there. Ewen Wallace's father initiated and organised the move. C2011 the building was knocked down because of white ants. Selina Sutherland was a 19th century nurse and social welfare reformer. She was particularly concerned with the welfare of destitute children. She founded the Sutherland Homes for Children which moved to Diamond Creek in around 1909. This biography was written by J. C. Jessop in 1958. The building suppliers and the Sunbury CFA were sited at the northern end of Evans Street and in the past were away from the main shopping centre. This photo is another view of the brick Ticket Box (58.1) on the right side of main gates and next to the former Dane House. In 1999 the house was owned by Stawell City Council and used as the Community Neighborhood House. It was demolished some years ago. Used by donor in 'Blackburn - a picturesque history'. Dud Prior commenced his first business with ten gold sovereigns. He was born in Nicholson Street Nunawading in 1889 and in 1917 he opened his first shop in Blackburn near the roundabout. Wesleyans at Magpie collected money to built a tent chapel at Magpie, but the rush had moved on before it was erected so the tent was taken to Ballarat where it becme the basis of the Lydiard Street Wesleyan Church (now Uniting Church). A bluestone church was later bulit above the Magpie School which was demolished in the 1960s with the stone used in the entrance building at Sovereign Hill.A large rock at Magpie, beside the Yarrowee Creek, was called Pulpit Rock. View of Hinkley Guest House on the left where the Post Office occupied a room in the front corner. The post operated from 1912 until 1937 when the building burned down. The Post Office then moved up to one of the Cadby Cottages near Rostrevor. This diorama is the focal point the Prisoner of War Gallery. It was originally designed and installed by a collaborative group of artists and craftsmen, all themselves former Prisoners of War in 1995. Bamboo for the display and replica prosthetics was sourced from Thailand. The mannequins are artistic interpretations of identified POW surgical staff and doctors. The original display was moved and reassembled during the Gallery redevelopment process in 2015.
