Aitkens Gap Police Lock up was originally constructed at The Gap which was south of the junction of Gap Road (Sunbury Road) and Calder Highway (Victoria St/Mt. Alexander Road). It was part of a police complex which was a changeover station for the gaol escort. A small weather board structure was used as a church until the Romanesque brick building opened in 1904. St Mary's Anglican Church was originally built on land in Oaklands Road. It was licensed in 1859 by Bishop Perry, the first Anglican bishop of Melbourne. In the late 1960s St. Mary's Anglican Church was dismantled from its Oaklands Road site and rebuilt on land in Bulla township adjacent to the old shire offices. It was moved because of the interference it would create for aircraft landing in the new Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine. Born in Ireland 1864, Daniel Mannix entered into the Catholic Church and in 1917, he became the Archbishop of Melbourne. Dedicated to the community and its issues, he was known to have spoken against conscription.
