A newspaper article from 1956 when Melbourne Legacy appealed to the public for the first time for donations. It outlines the work of Legacy. The call for public donations was partially due to the purchase of the Dureau building and the need to modify the building for Legacy's needs. From a folder of documents about the history of Legacy. Appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. This document was put together in 1956 when Legacy was about to approach the public for donations for the first time. It shows a lot of detail about the things Legacy was doing for the children and widows in their care. Also suggestions of how a story could be portrayed to the media and possible photographs that could be taken. It was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). Some notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. Surrey Hills Historical Society CollectionPhotograph, Alan Holt
Alan Holt was keenly interested in the history of Surrey Hills. He worked in the Lands Department and drew up maps of the area based on research he conducted there in his spare time and after retirement. He also compiled a survey of owners / occupants of all Surrey Hills listings from Sands & MacDougall directories at 10 year intervals. These are meticulously entered into hand-written ledgers. All his work is also entered on to index cards. With a lifetime's knowledge of local history and research techniques, Alan found himself after retirement, in constant demand as an amateur historian working for the Box Hill Historical Society and the History Group of the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre. When the Surrey Hills Historical Society was formed, Alan and Edna became its first and only Life Members. Alan began work in the Department of Crown Lands and Survey. In the 1950s-60s he moved to the Premier's Department where he assisted with the planning for the Queen's 1954 visit. He was promoted to Permanent Head of the Lands Department until retirement in 1972. He was associated with the Surrey Hills Uniting Church all his life. No information is available on the history of this item but it was common in the 19th and early 20th centuries to have household items made from animal bone. Sometimes it was bone from more exotic animals from Asia and India. This item may have been used to attach a decoration to the hair. This item has no known local significance but it is of interest as an item used in the past and will be useful for display.This is a hair comb with a curved handle and a coarse comb section . It is made of some sort of animal bone and has one of the edges of the comb section broken off. George Le Couteur, a son of the pioneer Le Couteur family, was a chemist in 19th century Warrnambool and the family had a long association with the Nirranda district. S. K Pearce owned shops in Mt Beauty and Tawonga. The postcard was used for tourism to attract visitors to the Mt Beauty township and the Kiewa Scheme on the Bogong High Plains. The postcard gives a brief history of the town and area both created by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria.The photos are historically significant and include prominent places in the Kiewa Valley, Mt Beauty and the Bogong High Plains. S. K Pearce was a prominent shop owner in the area having shops in Tawonga and in Mt Beauty as seen in one of the photos. Some Warrnambool medical staff in the past have been connected with the Women's Hospital.This book is of general historical interest and is retained as some of the early staff members also worked in Warrnambool.This is a soft covered book of 170 pages. This is a picture of the railway station building which was built in c. 1865. The railway line was built from Bendigo to Echuca in 1864. The left wing of the present building has an additional floor to the original building. Refer page 62 of Susan Priestley's book. "Echuca; A Centenary History." The Building of the Echuca Railway station was very significant to life in Echuca. It made travel easier for residents, but also it helped develop Echuca as the largest inland port in the world. Traders brought wool and wheat down the Murray-Darling river basin to Echuca where it could then be sent by rail to Melbourne for shipping overseas, or to other ports around Australia. Soft drink came in bottles bought at the local grocery store or at a large city store on a shopping expedition. The shape of the bottles changed as did the stopper used to seal it. Bottles were re-cycled remaining the property of the manufacturer. History of Cohn Bros., Bendigo & Swan Hill.Historical: Change of bottles - shape, glass, stopper, embossing, use. Aesthetic: Display showing embossing & shape especially if in good condition.Clear glass bottle. Bottom half has straight sides. The top half tapers to the top where a metal crimp fits over the lip. Manufacturer's name is embossed in print in block letters with its logo just above halfway from the bottom. At the base on the sides is embossing in capital letters around the circumference. The base is embossed with the crown seal of AGM.On 1 side half way up is embossed - Cohn / circle with CB inside around top of circle is Bendigo and around bottom of the circle is Swan Hill / Bros.is on the other side of the circle. - On the other side is embossed - The property of the Cohn Bros.
