James (Jim) Smith, (died 03/08/1974, aged 93 years) established an orchard growing snow apples near in Happy Valley after returning from mining activities in South Africa. The orchard was called "Springdallah" and was beside the Linton/Happy Valley Road across from the old Happy Valley railway station. Jim was the son of George Henry Smith (18/12/1840 - 26/11/1903) and Emma Keys Smith born Keys (07/08/1842 - 28/08/1888). George and Emma left Liverpool with other unassisted immigrants on the "Bates Family" ship with baby Clara on 08/06/1863 arriving in Melbourne on 08/06/1863. George and Emma emigrated to Australia on the invitation of Emma's brother Edward Keys who owned a property near the school at Happy Valley on which there were two houses. Teddy offered George and Emma the smaller one to live in. When "Teddy" decided to go into hotel keeping George took over the 200 acres of his property and made it a pleasant orchard and garden called "Cress Green Gardens". George had various secretarial jobs - rate collector; paymaster at the mines; until he became Shire Secretary for the Shire of Grenville, whose centre was Linton and Government Auditor for Western Victoria (1894-1903), the means of transport being horse and buggy. Another son followed his father as Shire Secretary. George and Emma had 14 children, Emma dying giving birth to Emma Keys who lived for 16 months. George later married Annie Bolte with 2 more children being born. Annie later sold the property. The land was used for grazing and the two houses fell into disrepair. In 1995 George's grandson Ernest (Alf) Alfred Watson visited the site and reported a wrought iron gate at the site and a mulberry tree near the site of his grandmother's family home. Bluestone blocks can still be seen in the paddocks from the roadside. The child in the photograph is Phyllis Joy Smith, Jim's eldest daughter. The photograph was associated with Harry Holmes who was a member of the Australian Imperial Force based in Egypt at the time. Gordon Spittle was the youngest of three brothers. He grew up in Creswick and attended Creswick Grammar School. Gordon purchased 'Mt Cavern' in 1912. It had 4 years of a 10 year lease to run. His mother and father took delivery of it on 1 April 1916. They lived there and farmed it until Gordon returned from active service in May 1919. He married Violet Holmes and both lived at "Mt Cavern" until their deaths. Gordon died in 1942 aged 51. Violet Holmes-Spittle died in 1949 aged 56. They were the aunty and uncle of Mary Elziabeth Holme ( m Chatham) Egypt was a major base for the AIF from December 1914. A number of campaigns were fought in this theatre. There were two campaigns involving the AIF. Note that not all the fighting was actually geographically in Egypt. Nick and his brothers, Clementine, Jim (Dimitri) and Orpheus were some of the many young Ithacan men who migrated to Melbourne in the 1920s and 1930s. Photograph of Gerasimos and Marigo Sikiotis (Scotis) and their young daughter Loula taken in the village of Stavros, Ithaca. They arrived in Australia in 1923 when Loula was aged 2 and settled in Newcastle. Loula married Nicholas Moraitis (Morris) in Newcastle. The family then all moved to Melbourne where they ran a milk bar at 162 Toorak Road South Yarra. Loula and Nicholas had two children, Jim and Andrianna. Many chose to simplify the spelling or otherwise alter their name to relate it more closely to the English language and pronunciation. Hector Sikiotis (Skiotis) was supervising his cousin, young Jim Morris when he was riding his tricycle outside the family business located on the corner of Osborne Street and Toorak Road, South Yarra. Denis Sikiotis (Skiotis) is the young man who was lifting up his young cousin, Jim Morris (Mortaitis). They are pictured in South Yarra where Jim's family operated a milk bar located on the corner of Osborne Street and Toorak. The four Varigos boys, from L-R: Menelaus (Dennis), Andrew, Nikolaos and Con were photographed in the 1920s outside 38 Bourke Street, Melbourne where they lived, above the family business. Their parents, Ioannis and Ioanna-Giannoula (Lekatsas) Varigos (Varvarigos) arrived in Melbourne from Ithaca in 1914 with three children - Nikolalos (Nick), Aikaterini (Rini) and Dimitrios (Jim). A further four children were born in Melbourne - Andrew, Con, Menelaus and Olga.Like many Ithacan men, Ioannis, emigrated for work and to support his family back home. Around 1900 he travelled to Umtali, Rhodesia and worked for six years before returning to Ithaca where he married Giannoula. The couple returned to Umtali where two children were born (Nikolaos and Aikaterini) and then returned to Ithaca in 1911. In 1914 they once again departed for Rhodesia but after being stranded in Port Said Ioannis decided to take the next boat which by chance was heading for Australia. The intention of was to somehow get passage to Africa from Australia, however WWI intervened and they settled in Melbourne.
