The South Warrnambool Primary school No 1902 was opened in 1877 by the mayor at the time Cr J Cramond. The first teacher was Mrs Eliza Clarke. It catered for the children of the strong and closely knit community of South Warrnambool. The Mc Donald family was one of these families. A clear photograph of a school with which many past students would have fond memories. A contribution over 25 years to a primary school in this case by W D McDonald is a story of personal endeavour. Shire of Grenville Hall and Angus shop, Sussex Street, Linton. Dating the photograph: The photograph can be dated to after 1887, when John Angus purchased the shop building (originally owned by Thomas Austin) from B. N. Dodd. 'W. Angus': From 1887 until the late 1890s the shop was run by John Angus' wife Wilhelmina Angus, who often advertised her business in the local newspaper, the 'Grenville Standard' (see photograph of advertisement, Registration no. 2019-346). It is not known when Mrs Angus retired, but it is understood that her son William then took over the shop. Elsie Jennings, an Angus descendant, recalled in a letter to LDHS that her uncle had run a draper's shop at this site. (See letter in "Linton - Township History - Recollections and reminiscences' file.) It is not clear whether the "W. Angus" in the sign refers to Wilhelmina Angus or to William Angus.Enlarged black and white copy of original photograph, which has been mounted on white card. The photograph shows a two-storey brick building, and next to it a double-fronted shop. The two-storey building is the original Grenville Shire Hall, built in the mid 1860s. The fence outside it is being used to post notices. Two large pine trees are between the fence and the building. The smaller shop next to the hall has a verandah supported by round timber posts, and signs across the front of the verandah read "Tailor" and "W. Angus". Two men engaged in conversation with each other are standing to the left under the verandah. 1.Photocopy of letter dated 24/12/1914 handwritten by William Thomas Byrne of Docker's Plain whilst at training camp - 3rd light horse brigade train - to his sister. 2.Photocopy of brief summary of W.T.Byrne's life to when he was discharged in 1918 - photocopied from Docker Plains School Honor Book William Thomas BYRNE was born on 21/9/1890 at Docker Plains to William and Johanna Byrne. He was educated at Docker Plains and Wangaratta State schools. A farmer when he enlisted on 13/10/1914. He trained at Broadmeadows and embarked on Hororata on 17/4/1915. He served with the 3rd Light Horse and 12th and/or 27th ASC - Army Service Corps as a Driver. Newspaper article dated 7/11/2003 states letter was found inside second hand book and the writer of the letter identified as the uncle of local Wangaratta resident and historian Bill O'Callaghan. The letter written prior to embarking overseas was addressed to Mrs Connell Ford Street Wangaratta but intended for his sister Nora, a Nun at Brigidine Convent, Albert Park. He first attended the school at the age of 17 years and within two years he was a member of the infamous Kelly Gang. During World War I, 22 former pupils volunteered for active service and four gave their lives. Organ purchased in 1886 by Presbyterian Church, Girgarre East (Springvale) and used continually there until 1975. Bought then by W&D Ballantyne (Harston). They gave it to this museum in 2009 on permanent loan. Used during WW2 when internee was married in the church. Girgarre East Presbyterian Church. Mrs M Clapp was the organist who played it at Springvale Presbyterian Church, Harston, for church services and Japanese weddings from internees at Camp 4. When Mrs Clapp became to old to play the pedal organ the Church purchased an electric organ for her. The donor purchased the pedal organ for personal use then donated it to the Museum. SAILORS ON HOLIDAY. . "A jolly party of Jack Tars mustered at the Missions to Seamen Institute yesterday at noon, and proceeded by train to Glen Iris, where they were the guests of Dr. and Mrs. Cherry. Liberal arrangements had been made for the delectation of these sons of the sea, to whom a sight of the tree , and grass and flowers were alone a real treat. A football match and a cricket match resulted in well contested struggles. Then followed tea of a substantial kind on the lawn, under the trees. As soon as this had been despatched, sports of various kinds— including a side-splitting "costume race"— were carried out with great vigor. The host and hostesses provided useful and ornamental articles as prizes, and these were distributed to the successful competi tors by Mr. Cherry. Then followed cheers for Dr. and Mrs. Cherry at the call of tire chaplains, Rev. A. E. Goldspink and Rev. W. F. Haire. Dr. Cherry replied by say ing that it gave him and M Cherry great pleasure to see the men enjoying them selves, and he hoped arrangements would be made for another such party ou an other occasion. Two Bendigo Advertiser newspaper articles with Amy Huxtable Women's Editor and a part of her series titled, 'At the Art Gallery.' The first article is titled 'The Story Teller with a touch of magic.' Peter Leonard is a story teller and a puppeteer and is performing at the Bendigo Art Gallery. It includes a photo of Mr. Leonard and also a photo of his puppets. The second article is titled, 'Gift paintings and furniture for art gallery - Newson collection now on display.' The late Mr. A. L. Newson and his wife Mrs. Jean Newson donated a collection of paintings and rare prints and antique furniture to the gallery and these are now on display at the Bendigo Art Gallery. There is a photo of 'Gums' by W. B. Identified by Mrs Surman as the Linton football team in about 1900. Mrs Surman also identified names of players, which are inscribed on the back of the photograph. Guernseys were apparently hand-knitted at this time, mostly by the players' mothers. They were all in team colours, blue and white, but had different patterns. Archir Harker was married to Ruby Wilson and mentioned in the "Wielands of Heathmont "book. From Greg Coker: In August 2023, RDHS asked Greg Coker to scan a set of negatives. He was able to work out, through various notes, that the pictures were taken by J A Harker of 9 Grange St, Mont Albert in the mid 50s to the mid 60s. Most of the film was 9cm X 6cm B&W negatives. All pictures have been cropped and where appropriate, put through a light filter. They have been scanned at 1600ppi resulting in ~3meg B&W shots (~5meg for the half dozen colour shots). The Harkers certainly liked their hiking – they were ahead of their time. Images scanned from Kodakl packet of negatives, undated. After scanning in 2023 by Greg Coker, the negatives and packet were. Some photos may be duplicated in other VC Harker/Weiland family records if the original prints were donated. Greg's comments: Early 50s to Mid 60s – Original colour & B&W negatives Largest packet of negatives with multiple sets clearly combined in this one envelop These were made up of: - 8 colour 9X6cm negatives – late 60s - ~40 B&W 9X6cm negatives – Early - late 50s - 3 large B&W 12x9cm negatives – Mid 50s Most of the pictures in this set are portraits pictures of Mr or Mrs Harker. Many in the front and back yards of 9 Grange street, Mont Albert. A few negatives of Phillip Island here also (Identified the Nobbies). Kodacolor Prints. -

Sea side holiday and valley views The date is best guess. Mrs Harker looks around the same age as the 1958 set. There is a prominent lighthouse in shot – that may help identify where the holiday was. Mrs. Julian owned the premises until ...Albion Hotel Stawell 1890's Albion Hotel built in 1868 by John Allingham, who held the license himself for that year. It was advertised that the hotel contained a billiard table. In 1869 Thomas Nightingale was the Licensee, he advertised Billiards, Skittles and a lunch daily between 11am and 1pm. There were various licensees until 1884 when John T. S. Julian bought the Hotel and was there until his death in 1899. Mrs. Julian owned the premises until her death in 1923. In 1924 the owner was Mr. W. Earle. In 1938 Mrs. Earle was the licensee until her husband died. William Hugh Earle was the licensee from 1938 to 1963.
