Framed certificate in honour of Australian Army World War 1 serviceman Private Frederick Alfred Evans, service number 4803 of the 60th Battalion Australian Imperial Force. Evans had enlisted at Carlton, Melbourne, on the 20th July, 1915 and embarked from Melbourne for overseas service with the 5th Battalion on 7th March, 1916. Evans was later killed in action in France on the 19th July, 1916. This is an example of the certificate presented by the City of Fitzroy to local servicemen who had enlisted. The certificate is dated 15 April, 1918, and in this case, the certificate was presented to the deceased serviceman's family. The elaborate certificate is printed, in colour, on a quality card type paper and has a number 375 printed at the bottom left hand corner. The certificate is complete with the original cardboard tube in which it was stored.The certificate has the inscription: W. and J. Barr, Print., 105-7 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy

Oslo, Norway. The return address, written in the top left hand corner, is Peer Rasmussen, 330 1/2 Central Avenue, Salinas, California, USA. Envelope bears one green 15 cent United States postage stamp and is postmarked Salinos, California. On the back is stamped an Oslo postmark dated 24/04/51 and two indistinct postmarks. Khedive's Sudan Medal 1896 -1908 Instituted 12th February 1897 on the approval Abbas Hilmi Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, this medal was initially to commemorate the reconquest of the Dongola province, with the clasps Firket and Hafir included in the original army order (No. 43). Later army orders extended it to cover battles and actions up to 1908 which were commemorated with a further 13 clasps. Obverse; the Arabic inscription "Abbas Hilmi the Second" and the year "1314" (Anno Hegirae) Reverse; A tablet inscribed in Arabic "The Reconquest of the Sudan 1314" supporting a trophy of arms. Over this is a centrally positioned oval shield decorated with stars and crescents - in the background is a display of lances and flags. Clasps; Bilingual English/Arabic, 15 issued - see table below.
