Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This item is significant because it documents actions taken by the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee in their role overseeing the Tourist Area.A circular updating news prior to 1966 snow season. The Warrnambool Standard Centenary Issue, 1872 - 1972, summarises the local and world history highlights over 100 years. The pages in the images are a sample of the newspaper's contents. This book “World So Wide” is a novel written by Sinclair Lewis. It is part of Flagstaff Hill’s historic book collection, known as the Pattison Collection. About SINCLAIR LEWIS (1885-1951) The author was born as Harry Sinclair Lewis in 1885 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. He was renowned as an American novelist, playwright and short story writer. His first writings were romantic poems and short stories. Six of his novels were published by the time Lewis was 36. Lewis won the 1926 Pulitzer Prize for his book “Arrowsmith” but declined because he had been helped in the writing of it by science writer Paul de Kruif, who received 25% of royalties on the sales. However, Lewis is listed as the sole author. Lewis received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1930 for his “vigorous and graphic art of description and his ability to create, with wit and humour, new types of characters." He was the first author from the United States to receive this award. Lewis graduated from university in 1907. He worked as a reporter and editor for several publications. He was a prolific writer, publishing dozens of works and numerous articles, and became popular for his satire. Lewis married and divorced twice and died alone from a heart attack due to advanced alcoholism) near Rome on 10th January 1951, aged 66. This book was part of a large group of books referred to as the Pattison Collection, which belonged to the Warrnambool Public Library, part of the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute. About RALPH ERIC PATTISON and the ‘PATTISON COLLECTION’ The ‘Pattison Collection’ is a collection of books and records that was originally owned by the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute, founded in Warrnambool in 1853. By 1886 the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute (WMI) had grown to have a Library, Museum and Fine Arts Gallery, with a collection of “… choice productions of art and valuable specimens in almost every branch and many wonderful national curiosities are now to be seen there, including historic relics of the town and district.” It later included a School of Design. Although it was very well patronised, the WMI was led to ask the City Council to take it over in 1911 due to lack of financial support. In 1935 Ralph Pattison was appointed as City Librarian to establish and organise the Warrnambool Public Library as it was then called. Ralph Eric Pattison was born in Rockhampton, Queensland, in 1891. He married Maude Swan from Warrnambool in 1920 and they set up home in Warrnambool. In 1935 when Pattison accepted the position as City Librarian for the Warrnambool City Council his huge challenge was to make a functional library within two rooms of the Mechanics’ Institute. He tirelessly cleaned, cleared and sorted a disarrayed collection of old books, jars of preserved specimens and other items reserved for exhibition in the city’s museum. He developed and updated the library with a wide variety of books for all tastes, including reference books for students; a difficult task to fulfil during the years following the Depression. He converted all of the lower areas of the building into a library, reference room and reading room for members and the public. The books were sorted and stored using a cataloguing and card index system that he had developed himself. He also prepared the upper floor of the building and established the Art Gallery and later the Museum, a place to exhibit the many old relics that had been stored for years for this purpose. One of the treasures he found was a beautiful ancient clock, which he repaired, restored and enjoyed using in his office during the years of his service there. Ralph Pattison was described as “a meticulous gentleman whose punctuality, floorless courtesy and distinctive neat dress were hallmarks of his character, and ‘his’ clock controlled his daily routine and his opening and closing of the library’s large heavy doors to the minute.” Pattison took leave from 1942 to 1945 to serve in the Royal Australian Navy, Volunteer Reserve as Lieutenant. A few years later he converted one of the Museum’s rooms into a Children’s Library, stocking it with suitable books for the younger generation. This was an instant success. In the 1950’s he had the honour of being appointed to the Victorian Library Board and received more inspiration from the monthly conferences in Melbourne. He was sadly retired in 1959 after over 23 years of service, due to the fact that he had gone over the working age of council officers. However, he continued to take a very keen interest in the continual development of the Library until his death in 1969. THE NEW WARRNAMBOOL LIBRARY When the WMI building was pulled down in 1963 a new civic building was erected on the site and the new Warrnambool Library, on behalf of the City Council, took over all the holdings of the WMI. At this time some of the items were separated and identified as the ‘Pattison Collection’, named after Pattison. Eventually, the components of the WMI were distributed from the Warrnambool Library to various places, including the Art Gallery, Historical Society and Flagstaff Hill. Later some were even distributed to other regional branches of Corangamite Regional Library and passed to and fro. It is difficult now to trace just where all of the items have ended up. The books at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village generally display stamps and markings from Pattison as well as a variety of other institutions including the Mechanics’ Institute itself.Lewis’s book is significant for its association with the writer, who was the first American to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature (1930). This book is significant for its connection with the Pattison Collection which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute collection is primarily significant in its totality, rather than for the individual objects it contains. Its contents are highly representative of the development of Mechanics' Institute libraries across Australia, particularly Victoria. A diversity of publications and themes has been amassed, and these provide clues to our understanding of the nature of and changes in the reading habits of Victorians from the 1850s to the middle of the 20th century. The collection also highlights the Warrnambool community’s commitment to the Mechanics’ Institute, reading, literacy and learning in the regions, and proves that access to knowledge was not impeded by distance. These items help to provide a more complete picture of our community’s ideals and aspirations. The Warrnambool Mechanics Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and the important role it played in the intellectual, cultural and social development of people throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. This tin contained bulk tea which came from the Melbourne Mutual Store. Established in 1872 as a profit-sharing co-operative of shareholders and staff, Mutual Store Ltd was situated at the corner of Flinders and Degraves Street, Melbourne. Fire destroyed the building in 1891 and the new building erected is an important heritage building today. In 1961 Peter Kaye Consolidated Ltd bought the business and it then traded as Mutual Store Holdings Ltd. In 1964 Cleckheaton (from England) took over the business and closed the store in 1965. Tea tins such as this one would have been distributed by the Mutual Store to smaller businesses such as cafes or repackaged for sale at grocery shops etc. Bulk tea can still be bought but the main tea sales are now in the form of tea-bags. This tin is retained as a memento of the days in the 19th and early to mid 20th centuries when tea was sold only in bulk and provided in tins such as this by the importers to small grocery shops and the like. This is a tea tin, cylindrical in shape. It has a tight-fitting lid with a metal clip. There is blue and cream painting around the sides of the tin with images of Greek figures and a wreath with a ribbon. The tin is much scratched and rusted. The first Eltham Police Station was in the small building opposite Dalton Street rented from Mr Jarrold in 1857. In 1859 a dedicated Police Residence was built at 728 Main Road. A small weatherboard Police Station was attached to the side of the residence and a blue stone cell at the rear. Also on site were stables for the police horses. The Eltham Courthouse was built in 1860 and is the oldest public building in the district. In 1959 the Victoria Police purchased a house in Pryor Street to be refurbished as the Eltham Police Station. In 1961 the Police in Eltham move into Pryor Street refurbished buildings and office. During 2001 to 2002, the Eltham Police Station was demolished and a new complex constructed on site. Shows the original building on the northern platform of the Mont Albert station. The railway line was extended out to Lilydale with work commencing in 1882. Mont Albert station opened in 1890. It is presumed that this building was demolished when the third line was constructed in 1971. At the same time the nearby Surrey Hills original station buildings were demolished. Brodribb State School was State School 3635. It is now on the grounds of the Primary School at Orbost. The schoolopened on 1st of January 1910. It consisted of a building constructed by the parents of the children concerned. This early structure was leased to the Department which had refused requests by the parents to provide a school. This arrangement persisted until 1950. The first Head Teacher was Hubert E. Neville who served there from 1st of January 1910 to 7th of July 1910. In 1950 the Jarrahmond School building was moved to Brodribb, and provided much improved facilities for the teacher and pupils. This building remained in use until 1965 when the school closed because of insufficient numbers. The Brodribb School remained vacant until 1968, when, moved to Orbost, it became an integral part of the school in Ruskin Street Orbost. This school record is of immediate interest and value to the pupils and staff who have learned and taught in the Brodribb State School. GARFIELD ž Kilmartin Road, Cooma.|John Thomas Dougherty, an American, came to the Tatura area in 1874. He married Emily Whitnell from Whroo in 1883 and they had nine children.|He started building Garfield in 1886 and it was not completed until 1897. The building was named after President Garfield of America.|The building still contains the original Ericson wall telephone with its tag inside dated 1906. The house contains many features such as Jacobean over mantel and fire surround in the dining room, stained glass, a push button bell, and a stair well leading to an underground living area used in the summer for coolness. Hat belonged to Julie Jones née Foley, now Heritage Programs Officer, City of Whitehorse. Worn for Grade 2 (1960) and Grade 3 (1965). Julie started school at Blackburn State School for Prep and Grade 1 and was on the waiting list for St Thomas The Apostle's in Blackburn. A vacancy came up for Julie to start in Grade 2 (1964). The teacher was Ms Goody and the building was 'an outdoor building separate from the main building'. Her sister Christine was in Grade 6, and she wore the hat first. St Thomas' was co-ed for primary level (Prep- 6) and girls for form 1 - Form 4 (highest level). The hat was hand me down from Christine. The National Trust (Victoria) citation on the Heritage Victoria Database describes Lalla Rookh as charming and rare example of a substantial domestic building from the depths of the depression of the 1890s. It was Classified by the Trust on 22/04/1971. The first Kew Urban Conservation Study established that the house was built in 1897 for John Duncan, civil servant. By 1910 William Robert Frayne, chemist, had purchased the property. When the building was listed by the National Estate the building was described as: '... Single-storied, the symmetrical, stuccoed house features a central porch with an arched opening and pedimented consoles and a bull-nose verandah which returns down both sides and is constructed with cast iron columns and friezes. A balustraded parapet crowns the main walls of the house. The encaustic tiled verandah is distinctive.'"Lalla Rookh", 41 Fellows Street, Kew, is of architectural interest as a representative example of a villa house of the period and also forms pan of the townscape of Kew. In a late version of Boom Style Classicism, the basically modest and conventionally planned house is proportioned to emphasise the porch and heavy balustrade, contrasting with the verandah and plain wall surfaces. The parapet may have had urns originally. The encaustic tiled verandah is of note. ... Bacchus Marsh Dairymen's Co-operative Association factory began in 1910. The Co-op, as it was known locally, also had a store in Main Street. This butcher's shop was opened in 1923 and was located at 160 Main Street. The Co-op purchased milk from local farmers and trucked the milk direct to a factory in Melbourne. Due to financial difficulties, the Co-op ceased trading in the early 1980s. Records show that this site was in continuous use as a butcher's and allied industries from 1856 to 2011. The original building underwent several changes and additions until it was sold in 1922 to the Dairymen's Co-operative, who erected a new brick building in 1923. This building housed the Hospital Opportunity Shop from 2011 until 2016 when it was taken over by Natural Health and is still in use by this business.Black and white photographic print mounted on grey cardboard with decorative borders. The lower sign along the top of the shop frontage reads: DAIRYMEN'S CO-OPERA. This sign is incomplete, indicating that the butcher's shop was part of the Dairymen's Co-operative Association store. At the front of the store six members of the staff stand in a line. There are five men, all wearing the traditional blue and white striped butcher's apron and one woman who is probably the cashier. At the top of the cantilever verandah, two rolls of canvas awning are tied up, ready to be let down on a hot day. On the left of the photo a portion of the brick Baptist Church can be seen. The store frontage continues to the right. The reflection of the store on the opposite side of the street can be seen in the window. The store frontage is finished with tiles along the bottom of the display window and an inset of leaded glass along the top of the window. On the footpath there is a scattering of sawdust, once used traditionally in butcher shops to soak up blood from the meat. The buildings at Kooyong have undergone various re-modelling and redesign over the years. These plaques commemorate the dual activities taking place at the Kooyong Centre, as it strove to adapt to the increasing need for technological support and the changes in information, day centre and supports needed by the blind and vision impaired community. These plaques were located in the corridor between reception and the day centre, but were dismantled during renovations in 2018.This plaque commemorates the start of construction of Vision Australia Foundation's information and technology facilities and was unveiled by Mr D R Argus AO, Patron Vision Australia Foundation, Chairman, Centenary Appeal in recognition of all who made this development possible for the lasting benefit of people who are blind or have severe sight loss. 27 March 2000, Malcolm Daubney, President.
