A photo of Mrs Billie Sims receiving a certificate. The blue paper label says: "Legacy Helping to keep the Aussie Flag Flying" President of the Australian National Flag Association of Victoria, Mr Ross Watson, O.A.M. (right) together with the Secretary of the Association, Mr Henry Farrell, thanked the ladies of Melbourne Legacy for their contribution to help keep the Aussie Flag Flying. Through the President of Melbourne Legacy Widows' Club, Mrs Billie Simms, Ross Watson presented a framed certificate to mark the splendid work of Melbourne Legacy Widows in attaching miniature Australian flags to thousands of sprigs of rosemary prepared for Anzac Day marchers and for the 2,000 plus school children who attend Legacy's annual Anzac Commemoration Ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance." Similar to another certificate from the Australian National Flag Association given to the Melbourne Legacy Club in June 1984. It was with a group of photos from 1988 to 1990 in a folio with paper labels (see items 01042 to 01049). The explanation of the source of the rosemary was in the same folio but the described photo is missing. It says the rosemary donated to Legacy each year for the sprigs of rosemary handed out to the public comes from nurseryman, Peter Hannah, who sourced a cutting from a bush in Frankston which was said to come from a cutting brought home by a wounded soldier.A record of widows preparing rosemary as gifts for the public and the story behind the source of the rosemary. Painting - Vessel, C.K.M. (artist), S.S. Warrnambool, 1883
This oil painting is in a handmade, carved frame, dates back to the period of the old Warrnambool Museum and Art Gallery. The two-masted, sail-and-steam-powered ship has the sails and bow shape of a tall clipper ship plus the extra power of steam. It dates to the transition between the clipper ships with their billowing sails and the steam-powered ships, which happened in the late 19th to early 20th century. The flag flown from the stern is that of the British Merchant Navy that traded around the world to transport cargo, and later passengers, from one destination to another. The painting was originally catalogued as the "S.S. Warrnambool" although it has a different design. It was also attributed to the ship portrait painter, the renowned C.K.M. - Charles Keith Miller - but differs from his style. Further research is being carried out at this time. In 1966, between the closure of the old Warrnambool Museum and Art Gallery and the distribution of the painting to Flagstaff Hill, this painting was repaired by David Heysen, son of the German-born artist Hans Heysen OBE. David was born in Hahndorf (called Ambleside for a short period of time), South Australia, married Lyly Refshauge from Melbourne, and they raised a family on their property in Kalangadoo, near Penola, in South Australia. The painting's frame is an example of handmade carving and joinery created in the late 19th century. The artist has depicted the image of a historical sail-and-steam ship of the type in which cargo was traded across the world, including to and from Australia. Vessels such as this also brought migrants to Australia.Painting, oil on board, in hand carved wooden frame with floral and geometric pattern, inner border painted gold. Image of a two-masted sail and steam ship, sails raised, black funnel emitting smoke. Hull is black with white horizontal stripe and white trim around sides of deck. Three lifeboats are visible. Bow is ‘clipper shape’ with what appears to be a figurehead. A red ensign flag flies at the stern and a blue and red flag is attached to the mainmast. The frame has been assembled using Mortice and Tenon joints, one of which is exposed on the back, lower right corner. Chandelier chain has been attached for hanging. There is no visible signature, date or title on the front of the painting. The back board has empty holes spaced around the edge and is held in place by staples. The visible surface has remnants of adhesive from two rectangular attachment s. There are two small white stickers attached, one with a hand written inscription. There are pencil and pen inscriptions. The painting is protected by cardboard with inscriptions in marking pen.On back board, written in the style used by the Warrnambool Museum and Art Gallery: - On white sticker, in pen “A-P31/1-74” - Pencil “A27/1883 / Artist CKM 1883 / Title SS Warrnambool / oil on board” Written in pen by the repairer - “Repaired & re-drilled – cleaned etc. / David Heysen 11/66” Written by Flagstaff Hill’s Cataloguer - Pencil “3031” On cardboard wrapper, in marking pen: - “S.S. Photograph, Harefield UK, 1995
Photo of an Anzac Day service in at the Australian Military Cemetery in Harefield UK in 1995. The local school children march to the cemetery to place wreaths, there is a parade of flags, a service and a choir. During World War 1 the Australian Auxiliary Hospital No.1 was stationed at Harefield Park in Harefield, UxBridge, Middlesex UK. 111 Australian soldiers and one nurse from the hospital are buried at St Mary's Church, Harefield. This became an Australian Military Cemetery with individual headstones and an obelisk and arch. The headstones which are of a scroll design unique amongst Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries were chosen by the staff and patients at the hospital. The arch was erected by the CWGC. Anzac Day services are held there and the local school became involved with the headmaster, Mr Jefferies, bringing the school children to lay flowers on every grave and attend the service on Anzac Day. This started in 1921 and has continued until at least 2021. One school child who attended was Mr Alf Young, he made contact with Legacy in the 1990s and sent photos of the Anzac Day Services and the cemetery. Legacy responded by sending Australian flags for the school children and also Legatee John Cohen met with Mr Young when in London. Melbourne Legacy staff member Susie Howard also visited Mr Young and the cemetery in 1995. Mr Young provided historical photos and information of the area to Legacy. He was featured in the widows' newsletter The Answer many times and his death was announced in The Answer in April 1997, he was 85. Many of the photos he provided were labelled as coming from Mr R G Neil, Photographic historian from Harefield. He holds copyright over those photos.A record that Legacy helped support remembrance of Anzac Day and World War 1 soldiers buried in the UK.Colour photo x 7 of Australian Military Cemetery in Harefield UK in 1995.02065.1 Label attached says '1995 Entrance to the cenotaph'. 02065.2 Handwritten on reverse 'Australian Cemetery 1995'. 02065.3 Handwritten on reverse 'Australian Cemetery 1995'. 2 have stickers of Mr R G Neil photographic historian. 02065.4 Handwritten label '1995 Me in centre with two visitors'. 02065.5 Handwritten label '1995 an older child placing flowers'. 02065.6 Handwritten label '1995 Children arrive to place their flowers on graves' 02065.7 Handwritten label '1995 The first time the Anzac graves have had an Australian flag on each one (114)'.cemetery, harefield, alf young, memorial, wreath laying ceremony -

Roslin Castle, the seat of the St Clair Family, was founded in 1304. It is partly in ruins. According to legend some millions of pounds worth of treasure being hidden in the vaults. it is said to be under the charge of a lady of the ancient St Clair family. She is to wake from her slumber and point out the spot where the treasure lies. It is located near the village of Roslin in Midlothian, Scotland. It is located around 9 miles south of Edinburgh, on the north bank of the North Esk, only a few hundred metres from the famous Rosslyn Chapel. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roslin_Castle)Three postcards showing different views of Roslin Castle. .1) A stone building on a hill side, with flying flag, .2) The Courtyard, Roslin Castle .3) The Bakehouse, Roslin Castle.1) This a fine view taken from the Glen. Formerly the castle was eight storeys high, five above and three underground. .2) While at Edinburgh I went out to Roslin saw there the Castle and Church. They are both very old dating back 500 hundred years. .3) The hole in the wall is the oven, is an immense thing. A fire was lit in the oven then pulled out and the heat in the stone did the baking.roslin, rosslyn, roslin castle, st clair, spirit, ghost, baking, oven, bread -

According to 'Visions and Realisations' The Eureka gold lead opened in August 1852, running from Little Bendigo, south beneath Yarrowee Creek into Pennyweight flat, where it was joined 100 yards or so from the intersection of main and Eureka Streets by the Canadian Lead. State School 1071 was formerly known as Ballarat Common School No. 71, and was founded by the Free Presbyterian Church on Specimen Hill in Eureka Street, Ballarat on 01 January 1854. On 20 May 1869 the trustees of the Presbyterian School, Specimen Hill, Ballarat, consented to the transfer of the site to the Board of Education.
