Metal trunk issued to F.G. Davey for his personal effects which were shipped home to Australia after WW2.Part of the Frederick Gardner Davey DFC collection. Refer Cat No 3536PRectangular metal hinged trunk painted black. A hinged metal handle in on each end and at the back. Each handle is secured with metal rivets. The lid is secured closed with two 'Closebind' catches A brass locking mechanism is located on the front of the body and is accessed through a keyhole. The interior is painted grey with a brown leather seal around the edges of the lid. Various markings in white paint appear on the lid, each end, the back and the front. Paper stickers are glued onto the lid, back and right hand end. Inside the lid is a manufacturers plaque and year of manufacture printed in black.On lid: 'J13/S, F.G. The collection of thirteen model horse drawn vehicles were carefully handmade by Mr Chas W Davis 1925 - 2002. He was a talented artist and saw doctor. This model of a horse drawn Baker's Cart replicates the vehicle that enjoyed respect from the public during the 1880 and early 1900's. A model of a single horse drawn red enclosed Capital Bakery Cart which is a lightweight four wheeled one passenger horse drawn carriage where the driver sits behind. It has two large and two smaller gold painted spoked wheels with brown rims, grey and black painted seating two gold coach lamps and a sloped red and tan footrest for the driver. There is a brake lever on the right side of the cart which activates the brake on the back wheel. At the rear are two ventilated gold doors and cupboards underneath the seat. There are two silver metal tubular shafts on each side to surround the brown horse which has a black tail and mane. It has the necessary horse tack for cart use to help the driver communicate with the horse. These carrier carts or vans were four wheeled medium weight Commercial Vehicles which were a very familiar sight in the horse drawn era. Every kid 'whipped behind' bread carts. The first models were imported from England around 1870 and later the local coachworks built many models. This tea set has been in the collection of the Warrnambool & District Historical Society for many years and it has no known provenance. It is an attractive set of china dating from the 1920s. This tea set is a good example of the household china used on special occasions in the Warrnambool area in the 1920s. It will be useful for display.This is a 17 piece tea set – Tea Pot, Jug, Sugar Basin, Five Saucers, Five Plates, Four cups (Maruhon Ware, ‘Della Robbia’ pattern). All the pieces have the same decoration of raised painted flowers, leaves, scrolls and borders in bright blue, green, black, orange, cherry red and yellow. Chinese market-gardener’s watering-cans on a wooden yoke. This item was authenticated by the Bendigo Historical Society, and is said to be quite rare. It consists of two large galvanized watering-cans each with a pouring spout, suspended by chains from a well-used wooden yoke. The cans would each have been filled with water, then carried a distance into the market garden and used to water crops. The cans and yoke alone are very heavy, one can only imagine how heavy they were when filled with water.As profits from the gold-fields petered out the Chinese immigrants, (nearly all single men), were forced to seek other occupations. Many moved into furniture building in the East Melbourne area, whilst others went into market gardening . A significant number of Chinese men, realising the potential of the sandy, fertile soil, with a good supply of water, in the Shire of Moorabbin, leased tracts of land in that area to establish a market garden and grow produce for the increasing population of MelbourneAfter the Dendy Special Survey in1841in Brighton, Victoria, the first sale of Crown Land, taking in the whole Shire of Moorabbin, occurred in 1852. These allotments of land were eagerly bought up - some by speculators - although many were either worked by the owner, or leased out as market gardens and "fruit gardens", (orchards).
