J.S Boardman was a local businessman who ran and produced the local newspaper until it closed down in the 1960s. Their original building was in Brook Street near the railway station but they later located their business further down in Brook Street on the corner of O'Shanassy Street. This electric iron was manufactured by Hecla, Australia and possibly manufactured in the 1940's-1950's. The iron was used mainly by housewives to iron items of clothing and various items of linen used in the home. Some items were sprinkled with water to make them damp and therefore help to make the ironing easier. This is an image of the original single storey Royal Hotel building which was on the corner of Brook and Evans Streets. In the 1930s the single storey structure was demolished after a fire and replaced with a double storey Art Deco red brick building, which still stands on the same site.At one stage there were four hotels in Evans Street between Station Street and Brook Street. At some stage the Millett family owned them. The property is Craiglee, which was one of the first vineyards established in Sunbury in 1865 by Stuart Johnson. It is sited on the east bank of Jackson Creek and fronts onto Macedon Street. The train smash occurred in Sunbury between the Station Street level rail crossing and Sunbury Station on February 6th 1952 at around 10pm. The goods train was being pulled by the green locomotive, which was used to take the Jubilee train throughout Victoria in 1951, to acknowledge 125 of European settlement in Victoria, ran into the back of another stationary goods train on the rail line. The guard, A.C Read, in the stationary goods train was killed. P J Mcwhirter, the guard in the other train was injured. The five men who were staff officers of the Victorian Volunteer Force were Captain Snee, Major Pitt, Colonel Anderson, Captain Payne and Captain Burton. The Victorian Volunteer Force was the main defence force in Victoria after the withdrawal the Imperial Troops in 1870. IN that same year a Permanent Artillery Corps ( Victorian Artillery) was also formed. The Volunteer force was disbanded in 1884 and replaced by the Victorian Militia force. Frank Millett and his nephew Hopper Cahill are the two people standing by the building after spending the day shooting rabbits in 1922. They are standing in front of the Aitkens Gap Police Barracks. In the 1860s the gaol and stables were sold to George Millett and added to the Millett property. The Barracks and the new farm homestead were built by Mick Morrison. The Bald Hill Hotel at Aitkens Gap on the Bendigo Road (Calder Highway) was guilt by George Millett in 1854 and functioned until the gold began to run out after the Victorian Gold Rush of the 1850s. The Millett family continued to farm until 1967. The family also and operated hotels in the local area. The Nook in Sunbury is situated on a wide and deep bend in Jacksons Creek. Today the area is a popular site for passive recreation with a walking path along the Jacksons Creek. The house on the RHS of the photograph was situated near Powlett Street.Before the Aquatic Centre was built in Sunbury the swimming pool at The Nook was the town's swimming pool for many years. Australia during the 1930s Depression went ahead and produced fancy ceramic electric jugs, which became status symbol in Australian homes. On 17th April 1919 a stock train travelling north crashed head-on with a goods train coming in the opposite direction. The driver thought he had been given the all-clear to proceed into Sunbury and it was only when the train was approaching the Macedon Street bridge that he saw the red light and it was too late. The accident caused damage to rolling stack and disruption on the Bendigo and Maryborough lines. The train coming from Bendigo smashed onto the platform at Sunbury. The driver of the stock train was thrown under the van and suffered a broken arm and facial injuries. The fireman was thrown clear of the tracks. A local Sunbury doctor treated them before they were taken by a casualty train to hospital. A crew from Melbourne came to Sunbury to repair the damage. A lodge was often erected at the entrance of a large estate to direct guests to the mansion or reject unauthorised people from entering the property. The presence for a Gatehouse or Lodge erected at the entrance of a larger property was a tradition copied by wealthy landowners in the Colony from one practised by the upper classes in Britain. The building is Our Lady of Mount Carmel School which is attached to the Catholic Church of the same name. Initially a school was established on this site in 1877 with classes conducted in the church. A new two roomed brick building was erected on the site on 23rd January 1916 and were opened by Archbishop Mannix. There were further additions to the school as enrolments increased in 1925. The school caters for primary school aged students.
