The notation H26 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. This is an example of Melbourne Legacy promotional material. Legacy invited the Scott family to be Personality of the Year in 1994. The family was profiled in the newspapers to help promote Legacy (see 00838). The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. Examples are Sir Weary Dunlop (1992), Clive James (1993), the Scott family (1994), The Emmanuel brothers (1995), Daryl Somers (1996 and 1997), and Patsy Adam Smith (1994?). A photo of Jim Tierney who was an employee of Legacy for many years. Jim Tierney was the first paid instructor employed by Legacy for physical training classes in 1927. Later he lived at Legacy's Market St premises as a caretaker until he retired in 1953. The photo was used in an article in the Legacy Newsletter. The article shows his long history of service. An article in The Age 6 Jan 1953 mentions that Jim Tierney was the first paid instructor employed by Legacy for physical training classes in 1927 and was listed in demonstration programmes as 'James Tierney FPCV, Chief Instructor Boys Section'. A press release from Melbourne Legacy in 1975 which relates a story of how Legacy works. The information was intended to be used by press and magazines etc. The title 'With Legacy's Help. It seemed like a miracle - just like having an invisible Mother and Father' and is about a young girl 'Betty' whose parents died leaving her in charge of three younger siblings. It dramatically changed her career prospects and struggled to care for them on her own. Since her father was a returned serviceman Betty contacted Legacy, and from then on it seemed like an invisible mother and father. Melbourne Legacy, Junior Legatees conducted Annual Demonstrations/Parades from 1928 through to the late 1970's, usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. These photos are at the Olympic Swimming Stadium, which was used in 1959 to 1962. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. A black and white photo of Legatee Stanley Savige and four others in swimwear standing on a beach. In the early years, Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. Legatee Savige was the key founder of Legacy in 1923. For those interested in the history of Melbourne Legacy this book is a must read. Filled full of larger than life characters and the good will of many volunteers and benefactors of Legacy. The book should be read in conjunction with Part One (item 00363). The Widow and Children statue was installed in the Legacy Garden of Appreciation at the Shrine of Remembrance on 29 September 1988. Sculptured by Louis Laumen a Melbourne artist. It symbolises the work that Legacy does with the families of deceased veterans since 1923. The artwork is a sketch of the statue and does not have a artist name on it. A photo of L/ Stan Savige with Miss Enez Domec-Carre and Mrs Gilles some of the senior girls. It was at an annual demonstration in the late 1940s or early 1950s as it was published in the newsletter with the news of Legatee Savige dying in 1954. The senior girls are all in their gymnastics outfits with Legacy logo. These were provided free of charge to Junior Legatees attending the weekly classes run by Legacy. Mrs Gillies was the first instructress of Girls' Classes. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. This document discusses the many options available to Melbourne Legacy in matters such as:- A) Disposal of Legacy House (293 Swanston St, Melbourne), redeveloping the existing site, selling the building and remain as a tenant or moving to another location. Many variations of these options are discussed. B) Whether Legacy luncheons would or should continue, would any of the above options reduce widow visits to Legacy House.
