Black fragile small thin notebook of handwritten recipes belonging to Lucy Sebire in the late 1800's. The covers are very worn and the pages are torn, faded stained and heavily tanned. Samuel Keam (1851-1928) was the son of John Keam and Mary Truscott of Eaglehawk. He was a keen bike rider who challenged many other riders to races in the Bendigo area. He also rode in professional races. He eventually opened his bicycle shop in Williamson Street. He married Mary Jane Wheatley in 1873. Aime Louis Ruedin (1847- 5/6/1896) was the son of Swiss immigrants Louis and his wife Catherine Schiener. Aime married Johanna Haemsen (1850 - 1909). in 1870. They planted extensive vineyards at Huntly and supplemented their income by selling fruit from their orchards. They had 7 children. In May 1903, fire began in the Ruedin home and spread to the winery. Some vats and winemaking equipment were save but approx 4000 gallons of casked wine was lost.Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from Tuesday, December 9, 2003. The memorial stone of the UMFC in Church St. Richmond was laid in December 1868. The bluestone church, which seated 308 people, was designed by G.R. Cox and built by John Wright. It was opened in May 1869. By 1890 subsidence in the foundations of the building had caused the bluestone façade to bulge dangerously outwards and a new façade of red and white brick was constructed. The memorial stone of the new façade was laid on 7th June 1890. The advertisements at the time stated that making bread with their machine was superior to hand kneading, This item is good example of a domestic appliance used when most foods were home-made. Access to commercial bread was limited in rural areas and housewives became skilled at bread-making.Metal bucket with lid. The Hill Hotel was one of 3 hotels in Mitcham in the 1890's.The licensee was Mrs Bridget O'Callaghan. The hotel was situated on the south-west corner of Station Street and Whitehorse Road. This is a passenger ticket for the Screw Steamship "Otway".It was built in 1872 at Glasgow for the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company. She traded to and from the Western Ports until 1878.when she was sold for the Melbourne West Australian trade. She was broken up at Sydney in 1924. The Warrnambool Steam Packet Company commenced in 1868 and operated on the Western Ports run using the ships "Edina", "Rob Roy", "Otway", " Nelson" and "Julia Percy".In 1878 it became the Western Steam Navigation Company which operated until 1896. There is no information available on the passenger James Gilligan This item which may come from the old Warrnambool Museum is of considerable interest as a rare memento of steam travel to and from the Western Ports in the 19th century. Warrnambool was an important port at that time and this item is part of our marine history. This is a receipt for a passenger's ticket to travel to Belfast ( Port Fairy) on the Screw Steamship "Otway" in 1875. It is pasted on a brown background and enclosed in a glass covered brown wooden frame.There is string at the back for hanging the item. Murray Comrie Collection. The house in this photo was once the residence of the Tarnagulla police officer. The town block where the house was originally built was the base for policing in Tarnagulla from 1878 until the 1990s. The house was built in 1878 as a residence and adjacent was a lockup, office and stable (shown in THA-2019.0031). This house was sold for removal in in the late 1960s and replaced with a prefabricated residence and small office brought from Bealiba. These as well as the lockup are still in place (as of 2019), but are no longer used. It is not known where this house was moved to. It is not known whether this photo was taken before or after the house was moved. Monochrome photograph of a house which was once the police residence in Tarnagulla. The set of seven imperial weights were used in the Post Office in Wodonga. The first Post Office in Wodonga opened on the 6th June 1856, and a second Post Office was built in 1874 on the corner of Sydney Road which became High St. and South St. In 1878 there were three staff at the Wodonga Post Office, including the Postmaster/Telegraph Manager and two Office-Keepers/Messengers. The mail service in 1878 included delivery four times a day from the Railway Station to the Post Office in Wodonga, and to and from the Wodonga Post Office to Albury twice a day.The set of seven imperial weights has local and state significance as it was used in the Wodonga Post Office in North East Victoria before decimal currency was introduced in Australia in 1966. Quercus Robur (English Oak) - Was planted by John Donaldson from seed collected from Windsor Great Park in 1878. Used for the Society's Banner project Joy Ness "View Hill" Kangaroo Ground June 11th 1986 In 1878 while on a trip to Scotland and England, John Donaldson visited Windsor Castle Park, where he collected some acorns which he brought back to Australia, to his property, "Kangaroo Hall" at Kangaroo Ground. He and his son John Anstruther Davidson Donaldson, who was then 10 years old, planted one near the present Donaldsons Lane, in 1878. This is now a very fine tree, 108 years old. This information comes from Miss Victoria Donaldson, daughter of John Anstruther Davidson Donaldson.
