The two men photographer are Angelos Lucas and Rev. Patsogiannis. Angelos arrived in Australia around the turn of century shortly after his brothers, Ioannis and Andreas. They owned the Lucas Cafe under the clocks of Flinders Street Station and the business remained in the family till the 1960s. Ioannis and Andreas were founding members of the IPS and Angelos was the second president of the Society between 1924.-1926. Angelos was also president of the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria for three terms, from 1930-32, 1934-40 and 1949-52.The Lekatsas brothers were prominent members of Greek community life in Melbourne from the early 1900s.A black and white portrait photograph of two men. Words on the building on the south west corner of Sturt Street are visible. "NATIONAL MUTUAL BUILDING". This building was used by Mark's Jewellers, and then Allan Bros. Jewellers. The next building has the writing "ARGUS" and Printers, Bookbinders, Stationers, on it. This was known as Berry Anderson's. I suspect that these are photographs before the celebrations for the coronation. SAILORS ON HOLIDAY. . "A jolly party of Jack Tars mustered at the Missions to Seamen Institute yesterday at noon, and proceeded by train to Glen Iris, where they were the guests of Dr. and Mrs. Cherry. Liberal arrangements had been made for the delectation of these sons of the sea, to whom a sight of the tree , and grass and flowers were alone a real treat. A football match and a cricket match resulted in well contested struggles. Then followed tea of a substantial kind on the lawn, under the trees. As soon as this had been despatched, sports of various kinds— including a side-splitting "costume race"— were carried out with great vigor. The host and hostesses provided useful and ornamental articles as prizes, and these were distributed to the successful competi tors by Mr. Cherry. Then followed cheers for Dr. and Mrs. Cherry at the call of tire chaplains, Rev. A. E. Goldspink and Rev. W. F. Haire. Dr. Cherry replied by say ing that it gave him and M Cherry great pleasure to see the men enjoying them selves, and he hoped arrangements would be made for another such party ou an other occasion. The jacket belonged to RAAF Chaplain Aubrey Alfred Quick. Rev Quick served in seven Methodist Circuits in Victoria, one in Tasmania, one City Mission (North Melbourne) and also an appointment with the Methodist Inland Mission in Central Australia. He was one of the first ministers to be appointed to the new John Flynn Memorial Church in Alice Springs. Aubrey Quick was a part-time Chaplain in the Royal Australian Airforce and received an Order of Australia for his pastoral care of the apprentices the RAAF. He served on the University of Melbourne Queens College Council for 23 years. Navy blue wool belted jacket with four brass buttons and a brass buckle. The jacket has four pleated pockets, each with a brass button, one small ticket pocket on the RHS and two pale blue grosgrain ribbons at the cuffs. It is lined with black cotton and the sleeves with cream striped lining. At a press conference in Melbourne, the Australian Council of Church, Australian Catholic Relief, the Baptist World Aid and Relief Committee, the Lutheran World Service and the Seventh Day Adventists joined to speak about a combined appeal to relieve drought victims in Africa. One speaker was Anglican priest the Rev. James Murray, who had recently returned from some of the drought-stricken areas with a film-maker, having been sent on behalf of the appeal. Rev. C. P. Schwieger, known as Percy, was vicar at Holy Trinity from October 1934 to 1953. Many Children in Surrey Hills were baptised by him as there was a population explosion following WW2. There is a stained glass window of Mary and Martha with Jesus that he donated to the church in memory of his wife Mary, obit. 6.4.1949. He oversaw many improvements to the church properties over the time when the parish was extending to St Augustine in Balwyn and land was obtained for the church at Wattle Park, now closed. On the 16th April the foundation stone of the Wesleyan Church was laid and does not appear to have been marked. It was opened for public worship on Oct 13th 1867. Rev Ken Moore of Melbourne was the preacher, only 6 months after the commencement of building. It was constructed of bluestone with a slate roof. The interior had not been plastered, nor ceiling erected, but would be a funds permitted. Cost at opening was L350/13/6; seats and deskL40. A Tea meeting was held to celebrate the opening on the following night. Church closed in 1910. SUMMARY – Uniting Church Op Shop Melton South Opportunity Shop – Brooklyn Road Melton South Est 1975 Former Methodist Church. The Opportunity Shop – Established 1975 by Edna Barrie 1992 Typed copy by Cath MacLean 2011 [Scots’ Presbyterian Church 1964] Additional information to the above summarised from Edna Barrie’s draft notes. Copied by Wendy Barrie January 2012, noting the information might be useful for future research. In 1985 the need for more shop space became apparent. Les [Bone] had plans drawn up (Surv 12/8/84) and approved by the Melton shire Council for a storeroom extension (17.800 x 9500) 1986 the small ancillary rooms at the rear of the timber church were demolished allowing the concrete slab to be laid. The building was completed in 1987. By the early 1990s the old timber Church had deteriorated, this lead to it being demolished in 2/11/1993. It was replaced with a new building containing a Pastoral Office, a meeting room and a furniture and homeware section. It was dedicated by Rev Ian Hickingbotham at 11am Sunday 5th June 1994. Service Awards were presented to 75 Opportunity Shop Volunteers by Rev Ian Hickingbotham. Funds have helped to pay for pastoral work, youth work and extra pastoral support. The stained glass memorial window was dedicated 12 April 1987. Dean Collection, refer Cat No 4575P1. The programme consists of 4 sheets of A.4 paper, when folded in two forms 16 pages. The cover is a yellow colour. The front cover has an image of St John's Church, the Rats of Tobruk Association logo and the title words. The rear cover has a black and white image of "A Weary Digger" drawn by Ivor Hele. Inside is a coloured photograph (15 x 10 cms) of the memorial window. The rest of the programme has the introduction and the church service by Rev. John E Webster B.A. LTh. This is bordered by a 2.75 panel of five groups of pintucks. Each group has a 1mm tuck and a 4mm tuck. The outside panel has twenty three 1mm tucks. This is an invoice sent to Messrs W.& J. Hall in September 1871 by the Committee of the Tower Hill Presbyterian Church. It refers to the annual church seat rental fee of three pounds, half of which had been paid in January of that year. The Tower Hill Presbyterian Church was under the auspices of the Koroit Presbyterian Church and services had been held in the Tower Hill area as early as 1845. The first permanent minister, Rev. Lachlan McGillivray. was appointed in 1849 and a wooden church was erected at Tower Hill in 1850. William and James Hall were early farmers in the Tower Hill district.This invoice is of considerable interest as a rare memento of the 19th century Tower Hill Presbyterian Church and a record of the practice of charging an annual fee for a family's use of its own pews in a church.This is a sheet of blue and cream mottled paper with ruled red lines, black printing and handwriting in ink. Mein's history of Ballarat College, published 1964, records the school's first enrolments this way. "The Ballarat College will be opened on Wednesday morning, 6th July, 1864, at 9 o'clock, in the Rev. Wm. Henderson's Church. Intending students will assemble at that hour" Advertisement in the Ballarat Star. 'Two seven year old boys 'assembled'. They were cousins, and their names were: Samuel Baird and James Brown. Dora Walker (married 1928 taking the name Simpson) had a long association with the Mission as a member of the Ladies Harbour light guild. This image is similar to another image in the collection which depicts the garden of the Walker family where many fund-raising events and hosting of seafarers took place. Rev Weller dates the image to around mid to late 1920s. In the 1960s and 70s Dora was president of the LHLG which later merged with the Flying Angels. She was awarded the MBE for her services to the community in the 1970s. Dora's son David Simpson is a volunteer still iat MTS n the 21stC. The Walker and Simpson families are examples of long association and commitment supporting the Mission to Seafarers. As they are researched it is clear the stories of these families document not only support for the Mission but are also shown to have been significant contributors, leaders and donors to the broader Melbourne and Victorian community from the 19th Century and up to the present day. "They came into Port" Some second war sailors staged a surprise reunion with an old shipmate at Portarlington UC recently. Eleven ex-RAN men came from as far as South Australia to be with their friend, the Rev. Alec Hilliard, who is retiring. Mr Hilliard, orgained 32 years ago, celebrated a reunion lunch with the men after the service. The men served on HMAS Junee. Alec Hilliard was ordained 1953 at Warburton (where he was minister when the Queen visited the congregation). He served at Castlemaine 1957-66; Herne Hill 1966-80; Bellarine 1980-85. The father, a gamekeeper to a Squire, was shot dead by poachers and the family has to survive and continue to manage the land they live on.A light grey cloth covered book titled Velveteens. A Norfolk Story by Edward Gilliat, M.A., Assistant Master in Harrow School. Illustrated by F. Barnard. The title is printed in yellow decorative lettering at the top of the front cover with a brown illustration of a man hunting with a rifle and dogs. The author's name is at the bottom in brown lettering. Inside is a Bookplate. Opposite the title page is a frontispiece black and white illustration for P.33, titled "Dead? Who's dead?" asked the squire. Publishing details are noted on the title page which has a faded tissue paper page. There is a Contents page, listing XXX chapters. Each chapter has at the top of the page a decorative nature illustration inside a rectangular box. P.125 has another black and white full page illustration. 250 Pp. Rev Laurel Grace Davey was firstly a minister in the Methodist Church and then the Uniting Church. She was ordained in 1971 soon after the Victorian and Tasmanian Methodist Conference opened up the way for women to be ordained. Before that Laurel was a Deaconess, appointed to Geelong in 1956 as probationer. She also served in Parishes of Newport, Moe-Yallourn, Essendon, Nyah District (Mallee), Donald Heytesbury (Timboon), and was twice Presbytery Chairperson. She moved to Traralgon in 1993 after retirement where she was a one of the founders of the Fabric Art Group and the Friendship Club. Fashion by Oggi, as the sign above the door proclaimed, was located at the Paris End of Collins Street, on the south side, virtually opposite Lilian Weightman’s Le Louvre boutique. Janet Brock, who at the time was working in the Central Business District of Melbourne, had stopped to admire a mauve version of the dress that was displayed in the window, and, on making inquiries from the proprietress, ordered a made-to-measure cream-coloured copy. Her marriage occurred shortly after the death of her father, and took place on 18 December 1971 at the Kew Presbyterian Church in Cotham Road, where the Rev. Peter Mackie was the celebrant. The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Items in the collection were largely produced for, or purchased by women in Melbourne, and includes examples of outerwear, protective wear, nightwear, underwear and costume accessories.Wedding dress, purchased by Janet Elizabeth Brock in December 1971 from Oggi of Collins Street. The wedding dress, reaching just below the knee, is lined in silk with a double outer layer of organza. The striking decoration of the monochromatic cream dress is achieved through the use of wide ruffled organza frills at the neck, on the sleeves and at the flared hem of the dress. The dress has a discrete v-neckline with small, self-covered buttons at centre front. At the back, the dress is closed with a nylon zip.
