Examples of Melbourne Legacy Club newsletters, covering the activities of Melbourne Legacy Widows' Club. Information includes a notice from the Chairman of the Widows' Committee, dates of meetings, possible day trips and theatre outings, and cruises. The ladies were welcome to attend monthly meetings, card afternoons, indoor bowls competitions, outings and tours, plus the annual fete and Christmas concert. The first edition of the newsletter was in 1960, previously there had been a quarterly magazine but the distribution was limited, they changed to a 4 page newsletter format to reach more of the widows. By 1987 and 1988 it was a 8 page publication, by the end of 1989 it was 12 pages long. Editions were edited by Joan Miller, the Widows Club Co-ordinator. Various pages of interest have been added to show different news items. A regular event for the widows was a concert by the Police Band in the Fitzroy Gardens. It was held in March for many years. The concert in 1994 was a success with beautiful weather. Over 740 widows attended. The Victoria Police Concert Band was led by Musical Director, Inspector Michael Pyne. There was a performance by the Police Pipe Band. Singer Brian Carbery performed. The photos show the widows sitting in the sunshine and the band including the police drum horse Gendarme. The article about the horse says it was the first appearance by 'Gendarme 5' who took over from another horse that passed away last year. Photos also included Legatee Eddie Jowett with a widow, and Legatee Charles Munnerley and Joan Miller, who both work on the Legacy newsletter. The Australian Historical Records Society existed in Ballarat between 1896 and 1906. They were one of Australia's first historical societies, and were in the position to still be able to talk to early pioneers. They invited such pioneers to either submit letters or memoirs, or to address the Society's meetings, where their reminiscences were taken down in shorthand and later typed up. The Society also attempted to preserve memorabilia from Ballarat's early days, but on the disbanding of the group in 1906, materials were stored at the Ballarat Town Hall and were later lost. It is not known how the papers made their way to the then Ballarat Municipal Library, but they have been part of the Library's collection for many years.Mr. James McCain Meek boasted of building the first house in Ballarat, on the corner of Dana and Lydiard Streets, which was also a lemonade store and some say a sly grog shop. Meek arrived in Australia in 1847. He was in Ballarat 1851-1853, and in later life he returned to Ballarat to live at the Benevolent Asylum. When he became very ill in 1898 his daughter Marianne Dallimore took him to live with her, and he died at her property near Warrnambool in 1899. He wrote these reminiscences for the AHRS, of which he was a member. He was an excellent penman and illustrator and he produced several extraordinary complicated works. Alan Judge Holt as an infant. He was born 16 June 1912, one of 3 sons of Edmund Holt and his wife Ruby Ellen Sutton. His brothers were Frederick Sutton Holt (1914-1992) and Raymond James Holt (1918-2000). The family home was 9 Beatrice Avenue, Surrey Hills and the family were active members of the Surrey Hills Methodist Church. Alan married Edna Jean Pallot in 1937 and they too had 3 sons - Barry, Neville and Max. Alan and Edna and family lived at 62 Broughton Road, Surrey Hills; later Alan and Edna lived at 2 Earle Street, Mont Albert and finally 13 Berry Street, Box Hill. Alan became Secretary of the Victorian Lands Department. He was passionate about local history and was responsible for much of the backbone research and records of the Surrey Hills local history collection. It briefly covers the period from the indigenous tribes(broken down into family groupings) known as the "first Australians" who lived in the valley well before English settlers arrived. first white settlement (graziers, miners, stockmen) to smaller settlements.The development or transformation from a pristine(hunter/gatherer) valley environment to one that has been gradually changing to a more commercial rural/industrial landscaped valley. This transformation was made within a time span of two hundred years. The book details the first pioneers and their descendants, along with the changes to their environments both domestic and commercial. The book highlights dates and events that shaped the "feel" of the valley. The extreme hardships faced by pioneer families during the extremely isolated times away from "civilisation".This publication provides an insight to the struggles and victories against the harsh Australian bushland by people who had not been raised in such a sometimes inhospitable environment. It was this transformation which instilled into the Australian psyche of self sufficiency and the ability to grasp onto ideas or "bush" remedies to overcome enormous difficulties. It is is ability that has produced the many inventions useful in the 20th and 21st centuries.This book has a 250 g/m cream coloured cover with print and drawings of rural aspects of historical significance ( Aboriginal and early white settlers). These photographs were probably taken in the late 1940s - mid 1950s. 3275.1 was taken at the roundabout in Nicholson Street / Salisbury Street intersection looking south. On the right is the The Commonwealth Hotel and the Gippsland Northern Store can be seen on the right. The war memorial can be seen in the centre of the intersection. 3275.2 has been taken from a height (possibly from behind the hardware store) overlooking Orbost House in McLeod Street. The butter factory can be seen in the background. Back yard toilets and paling fences can be seen with a narrow lane for the sanitary truck. Mrs Ruth Hannah Macalister, 1861-1932, established “Orbost House” as a boarding house in about 1900. Following her demise “Orbost House” was taken over by her son, “Reg” and his wife and they continued the Macalister family‟s association until the accommodation house was purchased by “Slim” and Eileen Somerville and Lindsay and Joan Jensen, in partnership, in 1963. Photos from a reunion of Junior Legatees at Watsonia Barracks in 1991. Photos include Legatee Grattan and Miss Enez Domec-Carre together and with groups of former junior legatees. Also in attendance was Sir Weary Dunlop and Legacy President John Swan (white hair and blue jumper) and his wife. Another photo shows Joan Miller with another lady. Other names unknown. From an article in the Widows' Newsletter in July 1991 it is a Grand Reunion at Watsonia Army Barracks in May for former Junior Legatees. Over 350 people attended. There were games for children, spit roasts and the renewing of friendships between former Junior Legatees and the Legatees. An article in the Herald Sun on Friday 17 May 1991 promoted the event using a photo of Ron Barassi and L/ Chas Munnerley mentioned the reunion was Sunday 19 May (item 01529). Two more photos are at 01015. It was with a scrapbook of photos from 1983 to 1991.
