This advertising card comes from the Warrnambool business of Swintons Pty Ltd. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool area. In 1865 he opened a store in Timor Street, Warrnambool, selling groceries, hardware, glassware and china. By 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Cudgee, Nullawarre, Wangoom, West Warrnambool and South Warrnambool. After William Swinton died in 1901 his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split with George Swinton and Sons selling furnishings, clothing and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling seeds, produce and hardware. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. This card is of interest as it is a memento of the Warrnambool business of Swinton Pty Ltd. The current Swinton business in Timor Street is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and with the name Swinton associated with Timor Street businesses for over 150 years, it is amongst the oldest family businesses in Australia. This is a piece of cardboard torn in half but joined together with adhesive tape. The cardboard originally had a pink or white background but it is now very stained. The card has a red border with ornamental corners and a black and white photograph of a woman using a telephone and a young girl. The card also has dark blue printing. The ticket is printed on a manila 210gsm card and printed using red ink to give day numbers, monthly, week number, transfers, and day of the week, excluding Sunday. Numbered on the right end of the ticket. Static number (1 - 7) on left indicates maybe the day of the issue. The ticket has been nipped in the day spaces 8 times and has been nipped for the month of April and week 1. On the rear of the ticket is the details of the ticket use, allowing the passenger one return journey between City and section 3 or 4. Not available on Sundays. The ticket was located on a tram behind a sandbox during maintenance works. The original postcards in this series (2013.002 to 2013.018) were generously loaned to Williamstown Botanic Gardens by a private collector for copying. The logo in the middle of the words ‘POST CARD’ indicates the card was printed by M. Schulz in Prague. Schulz was a long-established company from Prague and printed postcards for customers from worldwide. Schulz printed in photo-chromolithography. The Curator’s lodge, designed by the Town Surveyor, HV Champion, was constructed in 1907 following the re-organisation of the north-east corner with the demolition of the old curator's cottage and erection of new gates. The postcards are evidence of the interest the gardens held as a subject for postcard publishers. The text and images provide a snapshot into fashions, social interests and concerns of the time. The professionally produced images provide a pictorial history of Gardens including changing planting styles, various structures and features of the Gardens eg the aviary, cannons, the fountain, the second Curator’s Lodge and gates. The images offer an opportunity to compare garden vistas with the present day. The card also demonstrates how postcards were used as a method of contact in contrast to the contemporary use as souvenirs. A colour image of a house (the Curators lodge) behind a fence with two children sitting on it. There are two large Cordylines, one in the forefront of the image standing in lawn and surrounded by pink flowers, and one closer to the house. The house is brown timber with two brick chimneys and has a green corrugated iron roof with gables over the windows at the front and side.Front: ‘The Lodge, / Williamstown Gardens’. Reverse: Centre top ‘POST CARD’ with a logo [MS] in the middle of the words; left side vertical ‘O. This card relates to an excursion aboard “The SS Otway leaving the Warrnambool Jetty at 8 am April 18th 1873 to go to Belfast and Portland courtesy of the Warrnambool Steam Navigation Company Limited which was originally called the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company. The Otway was the second steamer purchased by the company. It had a number of ships which traded along the coast including, the Nelson, Julia Percy, Otway and The Edina. The Edina was originally owned by Stephen Henty who was operating it from Portland but he sold it to the new company for £8500. Henty then withdrew from the Belfast and Warrnambool trade for a time but it proved to be a competitive business. The name was changed again in 1878 to The Western Steam Navigation Company and the SS Otway was put up for sale. This card relates to one of the first trips, if not the first trip, taken by the SS Otway Shipping was a major part of the history of Warrnambool and this ticket is a link to one of the earliest passenger and freight services which operated along the coast.Small cream card with light purple text with company name at the top. Anthony Hordern sen. (1788–1869) came from Staffordshire, as a free immigrant in 1823, and the business was originally established as a drapery store in Pitt Street by his wife Ann. The family moved to Melbourne and remained there but a son Anthony junior purchased land in George Street Sydney in 1842 and set up business with his brother Lebbeus. They broke their partnership in1855 and Anthony took his sons Anthony and Samuel into partnership as they became old enough. Anthony Hordern & Sons was the largest department store in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. with 52 acres (21 hectares) of retail space, and was once the largest department store in the world . It also operated one of the largest mail order businesses in Australia. One of their advertising slogans was that they sold "anything from a needle to an anchor". A strip of blue cardboard with 95 small, white 2 hole buttons . The cardboard folds into 3 for easy storage with each section holding 36 buttons. 7 buttons are missing - used. The Eltham Hotel was opened in 1854 situated on the south east corner of Main Road (Maria Street) and Pitt Street. Post card dated Eltham 2.1.1908 sent to Mr C. Watson "Malvale" Mardan Inscribed "Wishing you a Brigt and Happy New Year from Florrie" Most likley sent by Florence May Shillinglaw to sister Carrie Watson and new brother-in-law Christopher Watson - The Watsons married in 1907 View looking south on Main Road towards Pitt Street and Watson's Eltham Hotel on left. At this time, the hotel was run by Christopher Watson Jnr. Carrie Shillinglaw had recently married his son, Christopher. Ultimately the hotel would pass to his youngest son, Herbert James (Jim) Watson who demolished the original building in 1925 and erected a new modern building on the same site that remains in present time though modified several times over the years. Postcards were posted or exchanged in huge numbers. Postal authorities in Australia only allowed the private printing of postcards from 1898. At this time the back of the card was reserved for the address and postage stamp, and the front was used for the message and a picture. In 1902 British authorities allowed a "divided back", so that the left side could be used for the message, the right side for the address and stamp, and the whole of the front was devoted to the picture.
