One of several illustrated envelopes, without letter, sketched by soldier/s during the second world war and sent to Mrs McDonald of WangarattaVictoria's 2/24th Infantry Battalion was raised in Wangaratta in July 1940. They were welcomed with open arms by the local community as they rapidly built up their numbers. The people of Wangaratta adopted the Battalion and they became known as "Wangaratta's Own" because of the time the battalion spent in the town during its formative period prior to deployment overseas. Many of the soldiers maintained life long friendships with the people of Wangaratta. Items donated (date unknown) by brother-in-law who was living in Montmorency and was a committee member of MERSL when item donated.Oval shaped slice of wood from the cedar tree in Lebanon. Carving of a cedar tree across top and emblem of Australian Commonwealth Military Services half way down and Cedar of Lebanon across the bottom half. Stained with light brown varnish. Original bark of tree all the way around the edge.Two stamps in French possibly where it was made, Artiols bois des cedres. Becharry Liban. Salim Kabalan. Neilma Gantner, 7th November 1922 - 15 June 2015 was an author and the daughter of Merlyn (née Baillieu) and Sidney Myer. Her father Simcha Myer Baevski, was born in present day Belarus and began his retail dynasty with his brother Elcon Myer, establishing a small drapery shop in Bendigo and growing the business in the subsequent years to Myer Ltd 1925.Hand shovel currently in use for ceremonial plantings and sod turnings by the City. Plastic handle with silver rectangle head.
