Associated with the service of Lieutenant H. Dixon, circa 1943. Worn by people who served on the Home Front in this Corps during the Second World War.This item is significant because Australian Army khaki woollen service dress jacket with red embroidered circular Unit Colour Patch on the top of each sleeves consistent with markings of Australia's home guard – the Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC). Four button down closure. The jacket is fully lined with a lightweight fabric, either natural or synthetic. A self fabric belt passes around the waist and fastens with a buckle at the front. Button down epaulettes with two pips denoting lieutenant ranking. 'Rising Sun' collar badges on each lapel. Pleated breast pockets with triple pointed flaps with exposed buttons. A pair of pockets over each hip with straight flaps each fastened with one visiable button. Pockets over hips have one Four front pockets are fastened with one visible buttton. These 8 buttons are domed metal showing a raised emblem of Australia surmounted by the King's Crown: also see Tudor Crown or Imperial Crown. A black and white photo of the girls' classes at Legacy House in the late 1940s being addressed by a Legatee. It was used in the publication to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Legacy in 1948 (see item 00939). The girls are wearing their cotton tunics that were provided by Legacy for each girl in the classes. They appear slightly different colours in the photo - only green ones are currently held in the Legacy collection.The girls appear to be listening to a Legatee and the blackboard behind them says 'A Merry Xmas to all' so it appears to be taken in December. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. Melbourne Legacy held Annual Demonstrations to showcase their skills. The photo was donated to Legacy from the family of Marjorie and Jacobina (Jackie) Bristol, sisters who were both junior legatees in the 1930s and 1940s after their father passed away, he was a World War 1 veteran. A note with the photo says Marjorie is 8th from the left. Jacobina later became Jackie Wood who passed away in April 2020, and Marjorie became Marjorie Bachmann and she passed away in 1986. Also donated were girls' green tunic uniform, a souvenir handkerchief, a junior legatee certificate and a $100 Legacy badge. A vintage 1903 hardcover children’s book with the title Chatterbox printed with white lettering at the top of the front cover, which has a green coloured background with an illustration in a large circle showing a girl winding a handle on a wishing well in a garden. The publisher details are printed at the bottom, with Price Three Shillings printed in red letters at the very top. The covers have broken away from the cotton bound spine. The faded light tan coloured back cover has an advertisement for EPPS'S (Breakfast) COCOA. with details of its efficacy and use for good health. The manufacturer details are added at the bottom. Inside the front cover are advertisements for Bird's Custard Powder and Robinson's Patent barley "in powder form". The frontispiece coloured illustration inside depicts a young girl dressed in wintry clothes carrying a lidded cane basket walking along a road on a windy autumn day. The title of the picture is 'Going with the Gale'. The title page has the title plus Edited by J. This beaded dress collar is of a style from the mid 20th century - possibly even as early as the 1930's. It is designed to be easily removed and worn with different outfits - e.g. a dress, knitted top or blouse. Articles from Australian newspapers (particularly the Women's fashion pages) in the decades from the 1930's through to the 1950's often mentioned society ladies wearing "beaded collars" when describing their fashions and in the 1950's "beaded collars" were being made and imported from Japan however this particular collar appears to have been handmade. Unfortunately the maker of this collar is unknown.This item is an example of how women in the mid 20th century used their needlework skills to personalise and embellish an item of clothing (a collar) designed in a practical way to be able to be used with different items of clothing. Lady's beaded collar with a decorative floral design of flowers made with blue beads, outlined with bronze beads on a white beaded background. Bronze beads have also been used to "draw" leaf shapes and tendrils and outline a border all around the collar. Drawn thread was an embroidery technique that appeared in the 17th century. In the late 19th and early 20th century it was used on linen and cotton to create decorative functional items such as this tablecloth. The item is of significance socially as an example of a decorative domestic object from the early 1900s. It is a fine example of drawn thread embroidery.Handmade decorative tablecloth created from soft white linen. It was opened on the 13th November 1901 by the Governor General Lord Hopetoun. Also in attendance was the Prime Minister Edmund Barton. The uniform is open at the front with eight button holes in right placket for buttons and shanks to attach. There are corresponding buttonholes on left side for closing, a small pocket at top left and a pocket at RHS of skirt. There is a small buttonhole at back of neck to attach white collar and white cuffs are attached to sleeves with two white buttons. The front has gathering from below the shoulders and the back top has an inverted pleat at centre. There is a white belt with two white buttons at one end attached with shanks and three sets of two button holes at the other end for closing. There is a white cap with frill and a line of blue braid above the frill indicating a third year trainee. This swimsuit belonged to Audrey May Ferguson (nee Fulton), a longtime Brighton resident. Ada of California was a Melbourne swimwear company founded in the early 1950s by Brighton locals Ada and Toni Murkies. Born in Poland in 1922, Ada was 17 when the Second World War reached her doorstep. She and her family were torn from their home by Soviet soldiers and sent to a brutal labour camp in Siberia as part of a series of mass deportations. In order to escape the horrific conditions of the camp, Ada and her sister Barbara joined the Soviet-backed Polish Army. During her time in the military she became close with a handsome young Jewish officer, Lieutenant Antoni Murkies, who later became her husband. After the war Toni was awarded 15 medals including the highest Polish military honour, the Virtuti Militari. Ada was awarded 10 medals, including the Order of the Cross of Grunwald. Emigrating to Australia as postwar refugees in 1948, Ada and Toni arrived in Melbourne with little to their name. Working initially in garment factories and building their connections, by the mid-1950s the couple were able to start a company of their own, with Ada designing the garments and Toni managing the business. Within ten years, Ada of California swimwear was being sold in department stores throughout Australia, and the Murkies family were able to build a permanent home of their own in Brighton. This collection of six documents (1915-1922) belonged to Charles Geary who was born in Warrnambool, the son of Thomas and Martha Ellen Geary in 1893. The collection documents his joining the Australian Imperial Expeditionary Force A.A.M.C. Dental Reserve, his subsequent discharge and post military employment in the Town of Warrnambool as a Hackney Carriage Driver and later as a second class engine driver.. This collection gives examples of references and certificates of leave required to join the A.I.F. in 1916. The discharge certificate is a good example of what was given to military personnel after their services were no longer required. The llicense and certificate of competency show some of Charles' post war endeavours. Charles is listed on the Warrnambool Fire Brigade World War 1 Honour Roll as an active member.
