The articles summarise battles that the 24th had been involved in, greetings from the Commanders, and news of the battalion. This issue has photographs of the officers who have had long service with the Battalion including Lieut.-Col. W.E. James, Col W.W.R. Watson, Maj. W.H. Ellwood, Capt. F.P. Selleck, and Capt. A.A. Ball. Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Legatee Frank Doolan, he was on the archive committee and made attempts to collate the history of Legacy. Muriel Butler stole a black coat and a fox skin fur in Melbourne in January 1918. She was arrested when getting off the train in Ballarat. She was also wanted by the police for circulating valueless cheques. The Henley on Snowy was a water carnival held on Saturday, 14th December, 1918. "It included a procession of decorated cars, buggies, etc., fancy costumes and sets, which left the township at 12.30. At 1 p.m. there was a speculator display of decorated boats. A luncheon, also afternoon tea and tea, was served by the ladies of the Red Cross, and the stalls were in the hands of the Comforts Fund girls." (ref Snowy River Mail 8.11.1919) Half of the proceeds were to go to the local Repatriation fund, the other half to be divided equally between the Y.M.C.A. and the Comforts' League. Unfortunately the carnival was not as successful as promised and the funds raised were not substantial. (More info. from O.D.H.S. This childhood sketchbook of the 1918 era details the emphasis placed upon a skill of brushwork that portrayed part of the students natural environment both in Tasmanian schools and Victorian schools, especially rural schools. The close bondage between students and their environment was a reflection on the early "hands on" approach in child education. Abstract art or teaching aids which could not be identified with physical properties available to students at this period in time were of lesser value. The ability of the student to identify the artistic value of local nature eg. local plants and flowers was especial important to rural based school children who had limited excursion opportunities available to visit town/city based botanical gardens and museums. This brushwork book is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as it demonstrates that childhood relocations from one State to another were not detrimental to the students overall scholastic development. The rural environment in Tasmania was not that far removed from the rural environment of the Kiewa Valley. The skills taught in both regions were still the same and the socio-economic factors and mores were also similar. This item demonstrates the relocation of one family from Tasmania to the Kiewa Valley. The expansion in population into the Kiewa valley was quite erratic and significant population growth only came after the increase in population brought into the area by the SEC Vic Hydro Scheme introduced to quench the demand for Victoria's electricity.This book has a brown cover with black print and designs on a 150 gsm cardboard. Each page is of the same thickness as the cover but is of paper.On the outside cover and contained within a thick boarder. There were numerous events in Kew, held during World War I, to support the War Effort. The 'Our Heroes' Carnival was held in the Kew Recreation Hall [dem. 1960], Wellington Street on the weekend of 9 and 10 August 1918. The event was held to gain financial support for the Lady Mayoresses' Patriotic League. Three press reports [see references] describe or illustrate the event. Organisation of the event was led by the Mayoress, Mrs Wynne, with the assistance of Mrs. H. Dodd and Mr. Hamilton Wilson. Stalls were operated by women selling items donated or created by individuals, organisations or institutions. While the badge is not mentioned in the references, it was clearly able to be purchased as a symbol of support for the event and for the cause for which it raised funds.The badge appropriates cultural symbols for political purposes. It is a rare example of a three-dimensional badge created to support Australian soldiers abroad during WW1. It is unusual in that the inscription is localised to the municipality rather than using a generic label. The Military Medal was awarded to T Adams for his actions during the Battle of Dernacourt,Somme, France ,1918This Military Medal is historically significant for it was won during a critical battle in WWI where Australian troops were rushed into position to halt the German Offensive called Operation Michael. Taking up the role as a Lewis Gunner Thomas Adams was able to protect a section of the Front line he was assigned to. Item has an internal card within an attached lace envelope. The card contained within has a number of commonwealth flags around the edges as a border and the card has the wording "Happy Birthday Greetings". Internal lace overlay is made of silk and has embroidery around the edges with small red roses and green stems and a larger embroided pansy flower in the middle of purple and yellow colours, with two small bordering elderflowers of light blue colouring. France October 14th 1917 Card reads as follows: Dear Ethel, your letter to hand 12th August and pleased to hear you are all well. Wishing you and all the compliments of the season I remain your loving brother Bert. Address annotated on the card : Mrs Wm Fuge Cornishtown Via Chiltern Victoria Australia. The Great War 1914-1918.This saddle belonged to Martin Balsarini, a soldier in the AIF WW1 4th Light Horse Brigade and who was at the Charge Of Beersheba. Dark Rum coloured leather saddle issued to WW1 soldier Martin Balsarini 4th Light Horse AIF. Saddle has cast iron stirrups x 2 with brass adjustment buckles. There is a restored leather rations barrel attached to the rear of the saddle. The saddle underlay is made of canvas and felt.
