These homes were built in 1981. One of the first objectives of the Association was "to provide the shelter of a hose for those Pioneers of the Goldfields whom the reverses of fortune have deprived of the means of procuring the comforts of life in their declining years." The first home at Charles Anderson Grove was built in 1925. Before that time the Association provided relief for needy pioneers. relief included monthly monetary payments, loads of firewood, medical assistance and distribution of Christmas bosed of groceries to deserving pensioners, and in some cases payment of burial costs. ::a) The dominant purpose of the Association is to give public benevolent relief as a charity, but providing independent living accommodation in our Retirement Village for person in need who are over 65. ::b) To raise funds by membership subscription, commercial and residential rents, donations, gifts and voluntary work, for the purpose of providing direct relief of poverty, distress, misfortune or helplessness. ::c) To maintain the important heritage and ongoing viability of the Old Colonists' Association. Glen Eira City Council History and Heritage CollectionQuilt, September 2016
This quilt was made as part of a public program for Glen Eira City Council's exhibition The Wounded Soldier. The quilt was designed as a response to a loan object for the exhibition, a Red Cross comfort quilt made by school children at Longwary Primary School for the patients at Caulfield Military Hospital after the First World War. Students from across Glen Eira were invited to workshops in 2016, and asked to bring a found natural object. Cameron Auty and Elle Credlin then explained the historic making of comforts for wounded soldiers by children during the war, and asked them to reflect upon what it would have been like to be confronted with war and its outcomes as a child. Artist Deborah O'Toole then guided the children in stitching message into their own cotton squares, and in tying the found objects into the cotton. Deborah then took the squares away and dyed them using a method that involved tying the squares into patterns and dyeing them to create the finished look. The quilt was displayed alongside the Longwarry Quilt during the exhibition before being collected into the collection.This object is significant as a modern, artistic response to Caulfield's experience as the centre of repatriation medicine in Victoria after the First World War. It is a locally significant object made by Glen Eira school children, and reflects the area's memorialisation of the war at its centenary.Square quilt made of tan coloured cotton. Constructing fear : Australia's secret industrial inquisition, Loh, Joe et al, 2005
A documentary about the Australian Building Construction Commission which was a coercive regulatory body empowered to investigate and prosecute breaches of industrial relations laws. It was created to particularly target strong building unions. Penalties imposed by the ABCC were severe - for example, terms of imprisonment and individual fines of up to $28,500 for failure to comply with summonses, refusal to answer questions, and disclosure to others of anything that happened at ABCC's closed tribunal. ABCC was disbanded in 2012, but the Turnbull Coalition government has attempted to revive the organisation in 2016. The failure to obtain Senate approval triggered the double-dissolution of Federal parliament and subsequent election in July 2016.Relevant to the history of unions and industrial relations in Australia. Nyukana BAKER (1943-2016) Born Ernabella, South Australia Country: Kanypi Language: Pitjantjatjara A Pitjantjatjara artist from Ernabella who began painting, designing and weaving in 1963 and producing batik in 1971. Founded in 1949 Ernabella Arts is the longest running Aboriginal arts centre in Australia. It was established o create employment opportunities for young women from the local Pitjantjatjara people. Nyukana Baker died 17 April 2016 at Alice Springs, Northern Territory. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Tony Pavich was a cousin of John Joseph Gervasoni. He was born near the town of Timor. During World War One he was wounded in the field on 18 April 1918, and admitted to the 3rd Australian Field Ambulance with a gunshot wound to the left leg. He was discharged to duty on 22 April 1918. He was killed in Action on 11 August 1918., during the Battle of Amiens.Photograph of Tony Pavich in World War One Australian army uniform. He served with the 38th Battalion (transferred to the 7th Battalion on 16/09/2016) A.I.F., joining at Bendigo on 09 March 1916 aged 24 years. Legatee Bannister was a legatee for 40 years (1976-2016) Colin graduated the RMC Duntroon as an infantry officer and his active service included two year in Malaya with 3RAR in 1957-59 and two tours in South Vietnam, in 1964 with the Australian Army Training Team and in 1969 as GS02 (Ops) HQ of 1st Australian Task Force and the Australian Force Vietnam. He attained rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He joined Peninsula Group, Melbourne Legacy in 1976, and served as its president in 1985.
