Carafe believed to be of the mid to late Victorian era and used as a bedside water carafe however the tumbler is possibly not of the same era could be later. These sets were in fashion from the 1700s filled with water and used if the owner required a drink during the night. however the subject item would have been made after 1850 as glass etching started to be used on glass from around this period.The carafe is most likely a vintage example of a Victorian bedside water container and for that is significant. George Pethard (1885-1961) was born in Ballarat. His father, George, established a soft drink factory in Numurkah, producing "Taraxale". George Jnr., joined his fathers firm in 1898 and moved the factory to Bendigo in 1909. In 1909 he married Hilda Leed. His interests expanded and by 1918 he was an auctioneer in Rochester before becoming a real estate agent in Bendigo in 1921. His business empire expanded to include a Ford dealership and a service station in Bendigo in 1924. In 1938 he became a Bendigo councillor, a position he held for 20 years. This mallet has a cylindrical head and would have been used to guide chisels for woodworking. The hammer end has a larger surface area than oblong mallets and gives greater control with less force. Wooden mallets don’t damage the metal head of the chisel as would an iron hammer. These forceps were owned and used by Dr Ronald Rome and Dr Kelvin Churches. Notes suggest that these may be a modified set of Denman-type forceps, as appearance of the outer part of the handles indicate they are an 'adaption' for independent use.
