book, first half 20th century
In the early 20th century, smocking appears in women’s magazines and sewing manuals on garments, domestic textiles and children’s wear. The 1930s and 1940s were the heyday of patterns and innovative stitch development. Embroidery has always had a great appeal to women, as it needs few tools. Historically the skills were taught within the family or in primary schools. Articles to make or embroider had been available in kits since the 1850s. Fancy work, the opposite of plain sewing, enjoyed great popularity in the 19th and 20th centuries. Companies which manufactured threads often produced instruction guides and patterns. This instruction book has been well-used. A small 30pp book with no cover. It contains instructions for embroidery stitches, including smocking.book-embroidery smocking handcraft needlework -

Book, Nillumbik Shire Council, These tiny threads remind me: The Written in the Time of COVID-19 anthology, 2020
In response to impacts of COVID-19 on the lives of the people of Nillumbik, and on creative practitioners across Australia, Nillumbik Shire Council called for writers to provide short texts, reflecting on their pandemic experiences. At the time, and for months afterwards, walking was one of the few sanctioned recreational activities, and in that way a reminder of 'normality' and the importance of community. Twenty texts were selected to be stencilled onto public walkways for the Written in the Time of COVID-19 project. There, on the pavements of locations throughout Nillumbik, they could intersect with the precious pleasure of the daily stroll, jog or cycle.Such was the quality of writing received, that many other texts could have been chosen. Writers responded with humour, sadness and passion to the extraordinary times. Given this response from writers, who submitted work from across the country, and the importance of recording the public experience of COVID-19, it was determined that a collection should be created, gathering in one place the very best of Written in the Time of COVID-19 submissions. This anthology is the result. It takes its name from a phrase in the piece, Moss, by Eltham writer, Lucinda Bain. Within these pages are tiny threads that exist only because, in 2020, a virus changed our lives and caused us to reconsider how we lived them. Incudes some black and white photographs and illustrations and short biographies of participants. In response to impacts of COVID-19 on the lives of the people of Nillumbik, and on creative practitioners across Australia, Nillumbik Shire Council called for writers to provide short texts, reflecting on their pandemic experiences. Book, Val Noone et al, Gaelige Ghrianduite A go Z ahOn (Sunburnt Irish), 2021
Gaeilge Ghriandóite: A go Z a hAon/ Sunburnt Gaelic from A to Z, Edition One, records selected findings of four Australians about the neglected history of the Irish language and Gaelic culture in this country. Gaeilge Ghriandóite/ Sunburnt Gaelic means the Irish language as it is spoken and written in Australia, as it comes to grips with a new environment. It is written throughout in Irish and is the first, and only, such book about the topic. Readers will find that over the past two centuries there have been dramatic breaks in continuity but also common threads. Triggered by positive responses from both experts and general readers alike to talks and papers all four had given on the topic, at a meeting in August 2019 the authors decided that the time was ripe to present to the public some fruits of their collaboration. The book's 108 pages present historical and contemporary facts about Irish-language culture in Australia in short entries, arranged in alphabetical order, with over 60 illustrations. This format makes it easy to find information and suits the present stage of research and publication on the topic. Also the alphabetical listing provides a flexible format for future editions. The book includes two short overview pieces and the first detailed bibliography on the topic.Ill, bib, ports, p.107.non-fictionGaeilge Ghriandóite: A go Z a hAon/ Sunburnt Gaelic from A to Z, Edition One, records selected findings of four Australians about the neglected history of the Irish language and Gaelic culture in this country. Clothing - Silver Tinsel Yarn on Tulle Scarf, 1970s
The Fashion & Design collection of Kew Historical Society includes examples of textiles dating from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Some of the textiles, were used as items of clothing, others as items of household decoration, or simply as travel souvenirs. These textiles were created both domestically and internationally. Predictably with the growth of an ethnically and culturally more diverse community in Kew after the Second World War, textiles, clothing and objects in the collection inevitably reflected this diversity. The item was purchased and donated by Rosemary Vaughan-Smith.A tulle scarf using beaten silver tinsel yarn on a net base, with pattern of lozenges, from Baalbek (Lebanon)scarfs, metal-thread weaving, lebanese textiles, rosemary vaughan-smith -
