This booklet aims to give a brief outline of Port Fairy’s history for the benefit of visitors. Port Fairy was an early sealing and whaling town with white settlement established by 1836. An example of the innovative winged keel design based on the Australia 2 yacht (Americas Cup winner 1982). The Star Fin was a collaboration between Australian pro surfer, Cheyne Horan, and Australia 2 fin designer Ben Lexcen. Horan won 1984 Bells Beach surfing festival riding a board using this fin design. This fin design represents a radical departure from surfboard design thinking at that time (early 1980s) Most people were concentrating on multi fin designs Mark Richards with high performance twin fin designs, then Simon Anderson's 3 fin 'Thruster' design. Cheyne Horan employed the talents of innovative yachting designer Ben Lexcen (who designed the Americas Cup winning Australia 2) to design a unique Star Fin which would provide greater hold for a single fin at critical angles. Horan proved the effectiveness of this design by winning the 1984 Rip Curl Pro at Bells beach using a board mounted with one of the Star Fins. A Report of the Commissioners, presented to Parliament in 1891, noted that: ‘The great Musical Festival, which was inaugurated and maintained during the time the Exhibition was open, was such as had never before been attempted. In that comparatively short period, no less than 263 orchestral, grand choral, and other concerts were given by the Centennial Orchestra and Choir, numbering nearly 800 performers, under the conductorship of Mr. F. H. Cowen. At these concerts the works of the great masters were performed in a manner hitherto unknown in these colonies, and your Commissioners are encouraged to hope that the stimulus given through their agency to the study of Music will prove strong and lasting. They also desire to return their thanks to the ladies and gentlemen composing the Centennial Choir, who devoted much time to the rehearsal and performance of the great choral works given during the Festival, and whose valuable services were rendered gratuitously.'An illuminated certificate inscribed to Miss L. However the wet weather kept away many of our friends from the Victorian Folk Music Club who find it impossible to play in the rain. Thanks to those few who came along. We maintained out consistency by again collecting a Prize for our float- this time for the "Best Eltham Theme". Thanks to Dennis McKay for again providing his trailer for the float, and to Paul Sidwell for towing it with his Land Rover. As usual Joh Ebeli with some help from other members, was responsible for setting up the float. ‘The Art of the Japanese Package’ was an exhibition that toured to 10 Australian and 11 New Zealand public galleries in 1979 and 1980. The touring exhibition comprised 221 objects of traditional Japanese packaging which extended from ceramics, wood and paper to woven fibre containers. At the conclusion of the tour, The Japan Foundation and the Crafts Board of the Australia Council donated the vast majority of the exhibition to the Ararat Gallery for its permanent collection. Combining the natural qualities of bamboo, paper and straw with delicate craftsmanship, these unique objects express Japanese aesthetics as applied through fibre crafts. In Japan, the qualities and traits of natural materials are exploited rather than hidden. The texture of straw, the septa of bamboo are not concealed but lovingly incorporated into the whole. In 1979 Hideyuki Oka, curator of ‘The Art of the Japanese Package’ wrote: “In no way self-conscious or assertive, these wrappings have an artless and obedient air that greatly moves the modern viewer. They are whispered evidence of the Japanese ability to create beauty from the simplest products of nature. They also teach us that wisdom and feeling are especially important in packaging because these qualities, or the lack of them, are almost immediately apparent. What is the use of a package if it shows no feeling?” The descriptions of the featured objects were written by Hideyuki Oka, curator of ‘The Art of the Japanese Package’, 1979.Gift of the Japan-Australia Foundation and the Crafts Board of the Australia Council, 1981This toy is a product of Tottori City, and its only connection with traditional packaging is that it copies the mats used to close the straw bales in which rice is packed for the market. It is interesting, nevertheless, for its clever use of such a cheap and common material, and there is no denying its charm. The Kew Historical Society holds a nationally significant Fashion & Design collection. In 2023 this collection was augmented by a donation by descendants of Francis Henty of nineteenth and early twentieth century costumes and costume accessories. These rare and aesthetically significant acquisitions increased the importance of the nineteenth century costume collection held by the Society. Following their accession, the Henty costumes were exhibited with other notable examples of fashion and design, previously donated by descendants of the Coombs and Weir families.7 x Photos of the opening night of Fashion in the Age of Elegance 1840-1900, held at Villa Alba Museum during the 2023 Australian Heritage Festival. These two minute books document the activities of the Warrnambool and District Amateur Cine Society from its formation in 1954 to 1981. In January 1968 it changed its title to Warrnambool Movie Club. In the 1960s the Society made films of the Florado festivals and in 1960 the Florado film was viewed by more than 3000 people when it was screened at the Liberty Theatre, Warrnambool.These minute books are of considerable interest as the Warrnambool Cine Society was very active in the second half of the 20'th Century. In 1938, the SEC Ballarat decoarated a tram with paper flowers for the Floral Festival. Has four ladies dressed in matching clothes standing inside the tram and four inside the doorways. Photographed in Wendouree Parade with Lake Wendouree in the background. The story is that it rained on the day and the ink in the dresses ran. See Reg Item 5188 for a coloured postcard of the ladies standing outside the tram. Yields information about a tram decorated for the 1939 floral festival colour scheme and has a strong association with the people involved in it. The party of the British surveyor Charles Grimes were the first Europeans to view the River Yarra, as it was later to be named. In 1960 and 1961, the International House Students Club organised a float for the Dandenong "Pageant for Progress", to garner support for the Building Fund to contribute to development of a new wing. The Women's Auxiliaries assisted in preparing the float, which also participated in Melbourne's Moomba festival. On the 1st March, 1959, the first special train was organized by the Australian Railways Historical Society in conjunction with the Kanyana Festival Committee of Colac, Victoria. It proved so popular that additional trains were later organized. Temporarily in storage at Newport railway yards eight NBH excursion carriages were transferred to Colac which ran on the special trains until early-1962. A A.R.H.S. "Kanyana" special excursion locomotive G41, an NC guard's van and NBH excursion carriages at halts at Gellibrand while the fireman attends to the engine requirements (or 'ER' in railways' parlance).
