Photos taken at the 13th Annual Widows' Art and Craft Exhibition held at Legacy House. The note with the photos says: "The quality and ingenuity of the arts and crafts entered were outstanding and quite a daunting task for the judge, Mrs Janice Bridges". This was an Annual Art and Craft Exhibition that was run by the widows club. The items could be sold at trading tables and at the table outside Legacy House during Badge Week in September to raise funds. There were craft afternoons throughout the year for widows to learn new skills and gather together at Legacy House. The Comradeship committee gathered photos of events and compiled them in a Comradeship photo album for Legatees to look through. Photos of the launch of Legacy Week in 1991. The guest speaker was Sir Zelman Cowan, a former Governor General of Australia. The launch was in the Crest International Hotel in St Kilda on 3 September 1991. Sir Zelman spoke movingly on the work of Legacy and on the dramatic world events: the Gulf War; the reunification of Germany; the changes within the Soviet Union and his speech was warmly received by all who attended. The speaker and head table are under the Legacy Banner - which says "Legacy Caring for Australia's Biggest Family". The same banner is used at an event in Melbourne City Square - see 000491 (from the same roll of film). President John Sullivan is on the head table and is also in a photo at the Eternal Flame (000493 from the same roll of film). Part of a Legacy Appeal or Badge week launch in 1991. A group of widows gathered at Legacy House doing needlework and craft. It is Marion Scammell (see also article in the Answer 1996 at 00889). This photo was published in The Answer in January 1997. Shows one of many activities that the widows were involved in. There were weekly workshops for craft and others for painting. The tapestry instructor was Nancy Crooks. The timetable for activities was published in The Answer each month. On Saturday 17 May 1947, an article on page 25 of the Australian Women’s Weekly reported on the formation of a new women's club: the East Kew Women’s Community Club. The article reads: "Wives and mothers in a Melbourne suburb, East Kew, have formed the East Kew Women's Community Club. While babies and young children are under the supervision of a play leader, wives and mothers follow up their own interests. The club caters for varying tastes, has musical appreciation, drama, and "Keep Fit" classes. President Mrs. Grace Thake says that the club hopes soon to have tennis, debating, and discussion groups. The club originated from a debate, "Should women take an active part in social and civic affairs?" Two days later their interest in these matters was proved by the forming of the club, which took for its motto: "To help others, improve ourselves, and foster the community spirit." Membership is open to all women, regardless of age, politics, and religion, and aims to co-operate with all societies working for the improvement of health and cultural standards." The East Kew Women's Community Club, also called the East Kew Women's Community Club functioned from 1946 to the end of the 1960s (to be verified). The records of the Club were placed with Kew Historical Society to preserve them for posterity. The post card features a view of the two storey Rupertswood Mansion which was built in Sunbury by Sir William Clarke in 1874. It had 50 rooms as well as a cellar and outbuildings ands built of bluestone. The tower is 100'(38.5metres) high. The card was sent by Waddy Paterson to his sister, Gladys, who was living at 89 Stirling Street, Perth in WA. He wrote the following message: "Dear Gladys, Keith and Waddy are having a grand time and we are here with Grandma and Auntie Anne in Sunbury we will be home soon now we leave by the SS Caroola on Wednesday 7th Dec. So be good until we come home your loving Waddy & brother Keith." Rupertswood Mansion is an important historic building in Sunbury and has had many functions over the years. It was subdivided in 1914 and offered for sale as individual sites. Building did not occur until after WW1 and after the creek across Union Road had been barrelled. The garage was built at 145 Union Road in 1925. It has had continuous use as a garage since then. Originally there were petrol bowsers on the footpath. The façade of the building is remarkably the same as it was in 1925 when David Denholm was the first proprietor. He remained until c1950 and was followed by Benchley Motors P/L, then Spenden Motors P/L. John and Val Warren-Smith purchased it in c1980. In 2019 their family, including Philip and Glenn Warren-Smith and 2 of Philip's sons, still operate it as J&V Warren-Smith Auto Service.The Union Road shopping strip was assessed for heritage protection by Lovell Chen in June 2011 (Surrey Hills and Canterbury Hill Estate Heritage Study: Union Road Commercial Precinct Citation). Within this report two buildings were mentioned as, unusually, still performing their original role. These were Dartnell’s Pharmacy at 376-378 Canterbury Road (contributory) and the motor garage at 145 Union Road (contributory). Warmly regarded and often mistakenly thought to be Philip's father, he was not a member of the family. Wally had an interesting background, not known to many. He was born in the German Templer colony of Sarona in Palestine. It had been established in Ottoman Palestine in 1871 and is now a suburb of Tel Aviv. In July 1941, 188 people from Sarona were deported to Australia on the Queen Elizabeth. Wally's family were amongst them. They were interned in Tatura in Central Victoria until 1947.
