The bell came from the ship Netherby, which was wrecked on King Island. The full story of the bell's journey from King Island is unclear, but assumption is that Roadknight family may have transferred it from their property in the Western District to Gippsland. These small cards were handed out to people who were interested in attending a series of concerts presented by the City of Melbourne and featuring brass bands. While there is no detail on which bands were performing, concerts were held at the Sydney Myer Music Bowl and the Melbourne Town Hall, both prestigious venues. The cards were kindly donated to the Victorian Bands' League by bands person Lindsay Patterson.These rare cards indicate a prolonged initiative from the City of Melbourne to let bands play at some of the finest venues in Melbourne at the time. It was the first Paralympic Games where International Sports Federation for Persons with an Intellectual Disability athletes were given full medal status. Paul Towers bought the property from Faraday & Kent, for whom Norm Henderson was the proprietor, in 1996. In 2003 it was bought by Evan Lewis. This flyer was modelled upon the "Monster Meeting" notice that was held at the time of the Eureka Stockade. The Save TAFE flyer was produced to advertise a meeting regarding Victorian State government cuts to the TAFE education system in 2012. The group remains a subcommittee of Ballarat Trades Hall. The initial meeting (monster meeting) was produced to encourage community engagement in the Save TAFE campaign. The writing on the flyer reads thus: "No taxation without education! Ormond Andrews (b 1894 d 1987) was an original ANZAC who enlisted from Orbost. He lived at 19 McLeod Street in Orbost and opened Andrews Mensland in Nicholson Street, Orbost. From Allan McKenzie - "The other person in the photograph with Orme is my grandfather, George Piper from North Fitzroy Vic who was a pilot with the RAAF in WW1. This book has been given as an end-of-year prize to someone in the Warrnambool Corps in 1904. As the book is for a young person it is presumed that the recipient was in the Cadet Corps section of the local Volunteer Corps. Members of the Cadet Corps were usually from a unit formed within a school. As neither the Warrnambool Agricultural High School nor the Warrambool Technical School were established at that time the recipient was probably a pupil at a private boys’ school. This book is of interest as a prize given by the Warrnambool Corps to a local Warrnambool boy in 1904. It will be of greater interest if we can decipher the name of the Sergeant-Major and the name of the recipient. This is a hard cover book of 160 pages. It has an olive-green cover with an image in red, black and yellow of a young boy in front of some buildings. The front cover has black and red lettering and the spine has an image of a woman and the lettering in gold and red. The book has a full page black and white illustration at the front of the book and there are 18 chapters of text. There has been a book plate pasted on to the inside cover but there is now only a fragment left. What is visible is handwritten in black ink. ‘….. Warrnambool South Primary School was opened in 1877 and the first teacher was Mrs Eliza Clarke. Many of the trades of the early parents were occupations such as tanners, saddlers, wharf labourers and fishermen. The school celebrated its centenary in 1977 and was decommissioned around the 1990’s.The community of South Warrnambool was close knit and the school was a focal point of that community. The McDonald name has had a strong association with that community for over 100 years. The game of cricket was and remains an important part of sporting life. After 15 years service, Cr Gardini complained that the calibre of persons coming in is highly political. This lifebuoy is part of the lifesaving equipment from the sailing ship the Falls of Halladale. It is filled with cork and covered with canvas and reinforcing bands. The name of the ship and its origin is printed on the lifebuoy. It has been sealed with several coats of white paint. A lifebuoy, or life-preserver, is used as a buoyancy device to keep a person afloat in the. It is usually connected by a rope to a person in a safe area such a nearby vessel or on shore. The lifebuoy is thrown to a person in distress in the water, allowing the rescuer to pull the person to safety. The lifebuoy is a made from a buoyant material such as cork or rubber and is usually covered with canvas for protection and to make it easy to grip. The first use of life saving devices in recent centuries was by the Nordic people, who used light weight wood or cork blocks to keep afloat. From the early 20th century Kapok fibre was used as a filling for buoys. Light weight balsa wood was used as a filler after WW1. In 1928 Peter Markus invented and patented the first inflatable life-preserver. By WW2 foam was combined with Kapok. Laws were passed over time that has required aeroplanes and water going-vessels to carry life-preservers on board. The Falls of Halladale 1886-1908 The vessel ‘Falls of Halladale’ was a four-masted iron-hulled barque, launched in July 1886, by Russell & Co of Greenock, Scotland and owned by the Glasgow Falls Line, which named its ships after Scottish waterfalls. The ship was built for long distance cargo trade. The Falls of Halladale was one of the last windjammers that sailed the Trade Route. The ship was on its way from New York to Melbourne via the Cape of Good Hope when, after 102 days at sea, its journey suddenly ended. During the night of November 14, 1908, in calm seas with some coastal fog, an ocean swell raised the vessel up then let it down on a submerged reef wrecked at Curdies Inlet, Peterborough. The ship was stranded and the Port Campbell Rocket Crew were sent for, to perform a rescue. However by the time they arrived, all on board had already travelled by lifeboat to the nearby beach at the Bay of Islands. The sight of the slowly disintegrating ship on the rocks attracted many sightseers. This lifebuoy is significant for its association with the famous ship the Falls of Halladale. It is significant for its association with lifesaving equipment used on board vessels in the early 20th century. The Falls of Halladale shipwreck is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register (No. S255). She was one of the last ships to sail the Trade Routes. She is one of the first vessels to have fore and aft lifting bridges. She is an example of the remains of an International Cargo Ship and also represents aspects of Victoria’s shipping industry. The wreck is protected as a Historic Shipwreck under the Commonwealth Historic Shipwrecks Act (1976).Lifebuoy; round white canvas ring, joined with hand stitching. The Electoral Act 1856 was passed through Parliament o March 13, 1856. Victoria was the first Australian colony, and the first legislature anywhere in the world, to adopt the practice of the secret ballot. Victoria's constitution prescribed that the Parliament was to be bicameral, consisting of an upper house, the Legislative Council and a lower house, Legislative Assembly. Men were entitled to vote according to the qualifications described in this book - the right to vote in each house was dependent on status - educational qualifications, income and for either literacy. Two names are registered for the Orbost district: James Dickson and J.C. McLeod.This item is a useful research tool.A 16 pp paper back book which has a clear plastic cover. The covers are beige coloured with the title "Gippsland Electoral Rolls for 1856 and Stock Assessment Payable" in blak print. On the left hand side is a vertical pattern in black print. This book belonged to James and Catherine McGinness (both names are in the book). James McGinness (1842-1905) came to the Framlingham area in the 1870s and married Catherine Taafe in 1880. Members of the McGinness families had been involved in hotelkeeping in the Purnim district. James and Catherine McGinness had a farm at Framlingham (including the breeding of horses) with the property known as Riverview. The farm and derelict remnants of the house still exist today. The youngest son of James and Catherine was Paul McGinness, a hero of two World Wars and the founder of the airline Qantas. The original spelling of the surname was ‘McGuinness’ but James altered the spelling to avoid confusion over names with his brother John. This book is of interest because it belonged to the McGinness family of Riverview, Framlingham. Several of the names in the book are marked, especially those of ‘McGuinness’ showing that perhaps the McGinness family of Framlingham had expectations of claiming some of the money listed as unclaimed. This is a hard cover book of 472 pages. At the back of the book are several pages giving addresses of lawyers and opinions of the Press. The cover is red with an embedded pattern on the front cover and gold lettering on the front cover and the spine. The inscriptions are handwritten in blue and black ink. The book contains names of those deceased persons and/or their heirs who have appeared in advertisements regarding unclaimed money. There are several coloured insert sheets in the book with copies of letters of thanks sent by grateful readers. The cover is very stained and torn at the edges. ‘C.
