Taffrail log, Late 19th Century
John Bliss (1795-1857) was born in Connecticut, trained as a silversmith and clock maker in Vermont, and began in business as a jeweller in New York around 1830. In 1834, now trading as Bliss & Creighton, he made and marketed chronometers and other items for navigational use. The firm became John Bliss & Son in 1855 and John Bliss & Co. in 1857. It remained in business until 1957. Truman Hotchkiss, a sea captain from Stratford, Connecticut, designed a mechanical Taff rail log in which the recording mechanism was placed on taffrail (or upper part of the stern) of the ship. After acquiring the rights to Hotchkiss’s patents of 1864 and 1867, John Bliss & Co. began advertising the "American Patent Taffrail Log." The firm also offered mechanical logs based on patents granted to John Bliss, Jnr and his brother George, as well as English instruments based on Massey’s and Walker’s patents.The SPECULANT is historically significant as the largest ship to have been registered in Warrnambool, and is believed to have been the largest barquentine to visit Melbourne. It is evidence of the final days of large commercial sailing vessels involved in the Victorian and New Zealand timber trade. A Souvenir Booklet recording the Section photos and a Nominal roll of those who served 1942-45 at the Land Headquarters Cartographic Company, Australian Survey Corps located at "Fortuna Villa" Bendigo was produced at the end of WWII. Each member of the unit was presented with a copy of the booklet. The booklet besides being a great memory for those who served is a very valuable resource as it names the individuals in the photographs and very importantly records a Nominal Roll of unit members and their Military details. This booklet is one of those original booklets. The booklet has been reprinted on a number of occasions with different coloured covers. The first and original booklet had a red cover. Editions with brown, dark blue and black exist. The black covered edition was the last reprint. This booklet was donated by Carol Hargrave of Grenfell, NSW after discovering it in an old trunk that she purchased.A4 sized red cloth covered hard covered book mainly containing sub-unit photographs of section members and includes their names. 23 x double sided pages of photographs and 2 double sided pages of a Nominal Roll of those who served at Fortuna 1942 - 45. Each of the 50 pages were scanned at 600 dpi in JPEG (.jpg) format and stored on the attached 16GB USB Memory Stick. The main entrance to Franco's was from Main Road. It was run by Sammy and another family member. Franco's was a 2 story restaurant. Pizza take away downstairs. Licensed, BYO upstairs. Downstairs originally had a female pianist/singer and the walls were a peachy pink colour with horse shoe shapes in the plaster, upstairs was a full function room with dance floor. It was renovated in the early 90s and a full bar added downstairs. They sold up and then opened a take away pizza shop on Bolton Street. The Penguin Drycleaners building was an extension built right over the entrance garden; the building to the left the former Volumes now Missing Gorilla. Born in 1879, Albert Jones owned the property Golden Glen at Wattle Glen. He was an orchardist and a very busy photographer, travelling over the Diamond Valley area recording everyday events, street scenes, and visiting homes to take family groups. With the help of Claude Burrows, cousin of Mrs Arthur Jones, he built hides from which to photograph local bird life. His hundreds of glass negatives lay forgotten in the basement darkroom until A,J. Spark of Balwyn purchased Golden Glen from Albert Jones's widow in the 1970s. His unclassified negatives are gradually being sorted by Mr Spark. Video recording and proceedings of 'Ethics and Legal Problems in Resuscitation' seminar, 20 March 1991, Geelong Hospital
Written proceedings and video recording of a seminar held at the Geelong Hospital on 20 March 1991. The topic of the seminar, ethics and legal problems in resuscitation, resulted in a heated debate among attendees. Several doctors took issue with a presentation by Megan-Jane Johnstone, a nurse, ethicist and academic, in regards to documenting decision-making, patients' rights and guidelines around resuscitation. Other speakers included Paul Mestitz (Physician at Geelong Hospital) and Brian Bourke (Barrister). The seminar took place from 7.45-9:45pm in the John Lindell Lecture Theatre at the Geelong Hospital. The content was donated to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (Victorian Branch) on a USB by Megan-Jane Johnstone, with the aim of raising awareness of how members of the medical profession debate and respond to ethical and legal concerns in healthcare. Colour film that is 10 min 29 sec in duration, 16 mm sound. 28th Melbourne Legacy Children's commemoration ceremony on the eve of Anzac Day at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne 1959, attended by the Governor, Sir Dallas Brooks, who gave an address. The President of Melbourne Legacy, Legatee McKeddie, conducted the wreath laying in the Inner Shrine. 2,500 children from 254 Melbourne Schools attended the ceremony, which was simultaneously broadcast by the ABC throughout Victoria, and over 200,000 children participated. Filmed by The Melbourne Repertory Film Unit, cameras Eric Aitken, David Corke, Ian Hanna and Jack Semmens, musical recording by Leo Fowler, music by Felix Werder, directed by Ian Hanna. This film has been digitised to preserve its content. Mrs Laurel Abercrombie, a Kew resident, donated the sculpture to the City of Kew in 1982, and it formed part of the ‘municipal collection’ of the former City of Kew (now City of Boroondara). A note in the file records that prior to its installation on its current site; it was attached to a brick wall at the side of Abercrombie Galleries, Johnson Street, Collingwood. It was restored by the sculptor c.1996. The file contains two colour photographs of the sculpture and newspaper articles recording controversy at the time of its installation. Various partiesReferenceKHS OrderThe City of Kew was amalgamated into the City of Boroondara in 1994. The new city comprised the former Cities of Hawthorn, Kew and Camberwell. This archive file contains primary sources and publications relating to the amalgamation. The earliest item in the file is a newspaper article/clipping from the Eastern Standard (1986) recording a request from Hawthorn Council to Kew Council to consider amalgamating. The file also includes other newspaper articles/cuttings (some undated) reporting on opposition to the amalgamation. An interesting item in the file is a photocopy of a coloured digital photograph of the members of the last Kew Council. [The original still has to be discovered]. Book - Wool Classing Exercise Book, 1936-38
The story of 90 years of wool classing between father & son begins in 1936, when a young boy by the name of Stanley James Hucker walked through the doors of the Gordon Technical School in Geelong. Born in 1921, Stanley was 15 years of age when he began his 3-year course in Wool Classing. 30 years later, Stanley’s second son Denis completed the same 3-year wool classing course. Beginning in 1966, Denis attended the same Gordon Technical School and walked the same halls as his father before him. Stanley finished his course in 1938. He went back to the family farm in Lake Bolac for a brief period before enrolling in the Second World War. At the completion of the war, Stanley returned home and married before gaining a soldier settler allotment, north of Willaura. This enabled Stan to use his wool classing knowledge. He ran between 1,500 and 2,000 sheep for many years, while his wool classer stencil also allowed him to go out and class at various sheds around the area. He held his stencil from 1938 until he retired at the age of 60 in 1981. On retirement, his second son Denis was working in the district, managing a local property while also leasing land himself. Upon his father’s retirement, Denis had the opportunity to lease his father’s farm, an opportunity he could not refuse. Denis had finished his wool classing course at the Gordon Technical School in 1968, graduating dux of his class. He began working with a local contractor and started classing wool in his team. Denis gained a great deal of experience working as part of this team in big sheds of up to 8 stands servicing between 10 & 20,000 sheep. It was not all smooth sailing for Denis however, and he soon learnt an important lesson. Class wool the way you’re taught, don’t listen to the owner standing over your shoulder. At a clip of Corriedales near Casterton, Denis was pushing too many fleeces into the line of fine wool. This resulted in a notice from the Australian Wool Exchange (AWEX) “mixing counts too much, submit three clips for inspection”. Denis was able to submit 3 clips with no further complaints, however, this proved a valuable lesson he would never forget over his long career classing wool. In the early 1980s, when Denis was leasing two properties including his father’s, things were going well until drought struck. February 1983 was the date of the Ash Wednesday bushfires, and saw Melbourne have three days over 40 °C for only the second time on record. This period saw Denis give away farming, turning towards contracting work instead. After the difficult times of the early 1980s, the next two decades were a good time for the sheep industry. 15 micron wool was selling for prices between 4 to 5,000 cents per kilo, double what you’d expect for the same wool in 2022. In 1995 a single bale of wool sold for a million dollars. This was a good time for Denis too. His contracting work saw him employing local shearers and shed staff. His team was involved with the shearing and classing of more than 130,000 sheep. After 20 years of contracting, it was time for Denis to transition into the next phase of his life. He gave up independent contracting, preferring instead to return to being a member of someone else’s team. In 2018, having completed 50 years of wool classing, it was time to call it a day and retire completely. At the annual Gordon Wool School Old Students Association dinner held in 2018, Denis was presented with his 50 years as a registered wool classer stencil awarded by the Australian Wool Exchange (AWEX). This is a rare honour achieved by few. As of February 2020, a total of 430 wool classers had achieved this 50-year milestone. For Denis however, his proudest achievement is achieving 90 years of wool classing with his father. The National Wool Museum is proud to share the collection of objects gained from 90 years in the wool classing industry by Stanley and Denis. This ranges from Stanley’s first stencil and Wool Sample book, started when he first attended the Gordon in 1936. The collection concludes 90 years later with Denis’ 50 years of wool classing Stencil. The collection contains many more objects, all telling the story of these 90 years, and the hard work invested by this dedicated father and son duo. This is the fifth in a series of 5 wool classing exercise books. They were written by Stanley Hucker in his time at the Gordon Technical College from 1936-1938. This book begins in a white cover with blue ink swirls covering its entirety. It has a central sticker label. Internally, the book is handwritten on yellowed pages with blue lines for the assistance in clarity of handwriting. The pages are also surrounded by a margin of red pen. The exercise book’s content is about recording and tracking the financial transactions of Sheep Stations and Wool Classers. It is handwritten. A selection of pages have been photographed to give an impression of the information taught in classes, 90 years ago. Record - vinyl based with paper card jacket and plastic record cover - 331/3 rpm microgroove vinyl record, or "LP", titled "Destination City". Jacket has a stylised view of the intersection of Flinders and Swanston Streets and Flinders St railway station with W2 233 in the top right hand corner. On the rear are extensive details of each of the 11 recording tracks featuring various trams around Melbourne. The vinyl disk itself has a blue label with the title, speed and side number. Produced and recorded by Ormond Slater and Ewen Cameron in 1969 with the assistance of the Australasian Post and the TMSV. This letter book contains letters that date from 1933 to 1936. It came originally from the office of John William Crawley Junior, an engineer, architect and surveyor in private practice in Warrnambool and also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1895 to 1935. His father, brother and son were all engineers and worked in that capacity or as the Shire Secretary, for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. The Shire of Warrnambool existed from 1863 to 1994. The letter book was also used by John Crawley’s son, Rolf who took over the job of engineer at the Shire of Warrnambool in 1935 and held the position until 1968. The book then came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying practice of Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society acquired the letter book, along with several other Crawley ledgers, from the Michael Hand Estate. This letter book is of considerable importance as it contains letters written by John Crawley Junior and Rolf Crawley, both engineers for the Shire of Warrnambool over the years covered by the letter book. It will be very useful to researchers. This is a hard cover book of 1000 pages. Only half of the pages have been used and there are some loose sheets. The book is bound on the cover corners and on the spine with buff-coloured leather. The pages contain an alphabetical index and handwritten letters. In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. Built in 1926, the Band Rotunda was a gift to the people of Sandringham by local doctor and former soldier Thomas Garnet Leary. On Sunday afternoons throughout the inter-war years, brass bands such as the military uniformed 46th Battalion Brass Band and the popular Sandringham Boys Band would play. The canopied top storey comfortably held twenty five performers with enough room for their large instruments. Large crowds would picnic along the foreshore listening to the performances. EDHS Newsletter No. 265 August 2022 We are fortunate to have in our collection a wide range of early images of the Eltham district. Some of these are part of the Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection (SEPP) held in partnership between the Eltham District Historical Society and the Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library). Some are part of the group of photographs collected when the Pioneers and Painters book was published to commemorate the 1971 centenary of the Shire of Eltham. A prominent photographer of some of these early images is John Henry (Harry) Clark, whose background story is detailed in the article on page 7 of this newsletter. We are indebted to him for recording places and people that now are treasured reflections of days gone by. Clock
The brass wall clock retains its key. It was provided by the Department of Shipping and Transport in about 1900 and is original to the lightstation. It was mounted in the watchroom, a small extension at the front of the lighthouse (later radar station), where lightkeepers completed many of their reports and recorded radio schedules, weather observations, distress calls and other data. Good, reliable clocks were also essential for maintaining a strict roster of hours for winding the clockwork mechanism that kept the lens active. The name of the clock’s manufacturer has not been determined. More specifically it was used for logging radio schedules that were made at five minutes to midday, everyday, and for recording the times of weather observations, distress and any other calls that came in. AMSA notes that ‘Lightkeepers who used this clock were said to have polished and wound it every week while it was in use until the 1990s when its otherwise impeccable time keeping mechanisms finally became inaccurate’.The brass clock at Wilsons Promontory illustrates the importance of timekeeping in a nineteenth century lighthouse. Despite its slightly chipped face, the timepiece has first level contributory significance for its historic association with the watch room and confirmed provenance. Letter from the Junior Legacy Club dated 19 April 1943 recording a request to the Treasurer of Legacy for a cheque of £100 to be drawn in favour of Holmbush Committee. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The Feelix library was developed to help children who were blind or have low vision experience the connection with books via tactile objects. Each print book was hand selected, a clear Braille overlay placed on the pages, and items relating to the story were made or purchased and added to the kit. The kit (book and objects) was held inside a cardboard suitcase and sent through the mail in a bright orange, zippered plastic padded pouch with a carry strap. Launched at the Melbourne Zoo on 11 February 2003, ambassador Sigrid Thornton read 'The Story about Ping' by Margery Flack and Kurt Wiese to a group of five children, who played with the other objects in the suitcase as well as those for 'The Tiger who Came to Tea' by Judith Kerr. Margaret Woodward is a an artist and an an associate professor of design at Charles Sturt University. Artist statement: "The Sea is All Around us is a multi-layered event which creates a memorable experience for those visiting the Dome Gallery and the Mission to Seafarers in Melbourne’s Docklands. The event acknowledges and raises awareness of the often difficult and dangerous working lives and journeys of seafarers by making visible their role in transporting commodities, materials and objects to and from Australia’s shores. This installation at the Dome Gallery in the Mission to Seafarers in Melbourne’s Docklands marks the third stage of an ongoing research project which seeks to reveal the ‘social life’ of souvenirs. Beyond their representational role souvenirs also trigger intangible, affective qualities – reminders of journeys and places, new associations with tastes, sounds and people, and thereby becoming objects which focus and hold memories. This installation invites seafarers and visitors to participate in a global project which aims to witness sea journeys and trace the mobile life of seafarers and souvenirs. For a fortnight in May 2015, the Dome Gallery became an architectural large scale compass, with the circular floor marking the intersection of its latitude and longitude (37 º 49'21" S 144º 57'03"E). Over these two weeks the Dome Gallery was inscribed with marks recording journeys made by seafarers, recording destination and departure ports, home lands and waterways, and in doing so making visible a small segment of the global patterns of seafaring. Custom-made souvenirs designed for the installation are given to seafarers as gestures of welcome and a memento of their visit. The souvenirs originating in Poland continue their journey by sea, to destinations beyond the Dome becoming part of the global network of seafaring, with an invitation for seafarers to record their future journeys using QR code scanning technologies. It is hoped that by releasing the 200 limited edition souvenirs accompanying the seafarers the mobile life of souvenirs and seafarers will also become visible. Like messages in bottles they leave our shores, becoming ambassadors, representing the Dome Gallery at the Mission to Seafarers, the waters of Port Phillip Bay, Australia’s red soil and vegetation, and carrying memories of visiting Melbourne." Shire of Eltham Living and Learning Centre is located at 739 Main Road, Eltham. The purpose of the Centre is: To provide an opportunity to come together individually and in groups in an atmosphere of equality, sharing their skills and experiences in order to improve the quality of their living. Tutors are not paid and fees are not charges on the understanding that the idea of sharing and co-operating spreads and everyone enjoys the results. This book was compiled by volunteers involved at the centre recording feelings, views of their experiences within the groups at the centre. It includes recipes, poems, stories and sketches, some of local scenes. It also includes an early history of the Centre compiled by the first Co-ordinator. These documents contain information about the Warrnambool Racing Club in the 1960s. Race meetings were held in Warrnambool as early as 1848, a few months after the first white settlers arrived. The Warrnambool Racing Club was formed in 1854 and the present day racecourse was first used in 1858. In 1872 the well-known Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase was first held. These documents came from the office of Rolf Crawley, a surveyor, architect and engineer in private practice in Warrnambool and also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. His grandfather, father and uncle were also engineers, working in that capacity or as the Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. The Shire of Warrnambool existed from 1863 to 1994. These documents came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying practice in Warrnambool of Rolf Crawley. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society acquired these documents, along with several ledgers and other Crawley memorabilia, from the estate of Michael Hand. These documents are of interest as they contain much information on the Warrnambool Racing Club and will be of assistance to researchers.This is a collection of documents relating to the Warrnambool Racing Club. The Woodend RVIB Auxiliary formed on November 8, 1929. This small collection contains index cards which were maintained by RVIB and contain the amount of donations made by the Auxiliary between 1976 - 1995 as well as the presentations delivered by RVIB employees to Auxiliary meetings between 1973 - 1985. Correspondence to and from RVIB head office ranging between 1990 - 2000. Newspaper article from 1990 'RVIB honour'; The Gisborne and Woodend auxiliaries of the RVIB have been invited to the unveiling of two plaques made in honour of the late Miss Betty Ross Watt and the late Mrs Caroline Mary Goldie at RVIB in St. Kilda Road. These ladies were foundation members of the Gisborne and Woodend auxiliaries respectively, and they worked hard and inspired others for over 50 years. As a result of their generous bequest to the institute, four sound-proofed recording studios have been completed. Other funds donated by the two women have been used for the extensions of the RVIB talking book library building and additions to library facilities. In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. In the mid 1870s wealthy solicitor David Abbot bought a large block on the corner of Bamfield Street and Beach Road and built an imposing family home with a stately tower. It featured rare Hawthorn Blacks – hand-made bricks of brown-red with streaks of charcoal black. For many years the home was the most prominent in the district. In 1922 ‘Coggeshall’ was subdivided, and the house was sold to the Sandringham Club, a gentleman’s club that had formed in 1913 and required more space for its growing membership. Members enjoyed lawn tennis courts, a bowling green and a cricket green, as well as a large billiard room. Lisa Gervasoni specialises in photography, embroidery and acrylic paintings on canvas. Many of her works have the theme of interpretation of heritage and cultural spaces. Dedicated to recording cultural heritage in situ Lisa Gervasoni has used photography to document urban areas, heritage sites and natural resources of Australia.She has provided over 70,000 images to the National Library of Australia Trove database via the Flickr portal. In 2004 Lisa Gervasoni won the Daylesford Small Art Prize for an embroidered depiction of the Savoia Hotel in Hepburn Springs, and in 2022 she was shortlisted in the Harden Landscape prize.
