Charles Perry was born in Cornwall in 1832 and came to Victoria when he was 25. He and John Hunter established a fuse factory in Wattle Street. Perry designed and patented a safety fuse that he was then able to put into production in 1875. In 1889 the business was sold to Bickford Smith and Co., English fuse manufacturers, who continued to manufacture fuses until 1912. Perry was active in community affairs and served as a councillor for the Sutton Ward in 1902. The Geelong Harbour Trust Band was one of five brass bands existing in the Geelogn area in the early 1900's. They were quite successful in competition under the direction of conductor Mr Harry Shugg. After their conductor Harry Shugg left to conduct the Malvern Tramways Band in 1915, the band merged with the Geelong Municipal Band to become the Geelong City Band. This photo, which matches a postcard in our collection, has most likely been taken in 1910 after their competition win at the Royal South Street Society competition in Ballarat.This photo is significant as it provides a historical window on the activities of this (former) brass band and their achievements. According to the paper label "Expatriate Clive James was named the 1993 Legacy Personality of the Year at a special function conducted by Melbourne Legacy. Clive entertained over 500 guests with a personal address of his time as a young Legacy boy. Clive will be seen later in the year as part of Legacy's Annual Badge Appeal." It was a "Breakfast with Clive James" at the Regent Hotel in February 1993, and Australian author Patsy Adam-Smith and Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop were also guests. (See also 00752 and 00753). Legacy celebrated its Centenary in 2023 by conducting a Torch Relay from Pozieres in France, to London, and around Australia, ending in Melbourne. This uniform was used by Legatee David Kelly on 12th and 13th October who donated it to the archive. Legatee Kelly is a Past President of Melbourne Legacy 2000, Past Chairman of Legacy Coordinating Council 2009/10. Legatee Kelly was the ML representative on the Board of Legacy Australia Inc in October 2019 when the initial decision was made to investigate the possibility of conducting a relay to commemorate Legacy’s centenary. Legatee Kelly together with the Hobart Legacy representative were Co-Chairman of the Centenary of Legacy Committee reporting to Legacy Australia Inc. On 12th October 2023 Legatee Kelly together with his wife Legatee Helen Kelly participated in the Torch Relay in the Melbourne Legacy leg of the relay. On Friday 13th October the Torch Relay was scheduled to conclude at the Shrine of Remembrance with the flame to be returned to the eternal flame at the Shrine. Legatee Kelly was selected to be the last Legacy torchbearer, he lead representatives from Legacy Clubs attending The 2023 National Conference up the Forecourt where the flame passed to the wife of the Governor General Mrs Linda Hurley. The Bendigo Womens Auxiliary was actually formed in 1936 and went through until 2002. Due the Soldiers Memorial Institute becoming a Museum and the formation of the Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch Inc the Auxiliary decided to cease fund raising. Their last meeting was held on 26.8.2002. During their time at SMI the Ladies conducted weddings, functions and other fund raisers to support the Bendigo RSL. At the RSL Annual Dinner each year which the ladies catered for they would present the RSL with a cheque. The Auxiliary were awarded 6 Life Memberships and two Certificates of Merit with gold badge.Charter, small brown section timber frame with details on white background. The Melbourne Olympic games were mainly conducted at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and were one of the most successful in terms of medals for Australia. Among the medal winners were Shirley Strickland, Betty Cuthbert in Athletics and Dawn Fraser and Murray rose in swimming. The games commenced in November 1956. The games were noted for the 19 Hungarian athletes who applied for asylum with their home country undergoing upheaval at the time. The Melbourne games also enjoyed the advent of television with the technology having recently been introduced to the country. These badges note ten of the many athletes who competed for Australia in 1956. These items are of social significance and interest. Born at Drouin on 2 April 1923. Her Record of Conduct and Service describes her as being 5' 6¼" tall and weighing 10 stone, 3lb., with brown eyes and hair and a fair complexion. She was a factory hand before joining the police force and has also served as a cook with the WRAAF. She served at Russell Street and Geelong and was also seconded to the Crown Law Department at the Fair Rents Board as an investigator. A photograph of Olive with an abandoned baby appeared in the Sun News Pictorial on 30 March 1960. A booklet of a list of excursions that was arranged for the visiting members of the British Association for Advancement of Science which included Marysville. These excursions were conducted in August 1914. They included geological excursions as well as excursions to local attractions to observe the flora and fauna found in and around the various destinations. The excursions were to Bacchus Marsh, Marysville, Warburton and Cement Creek, the Macedon District, Emerald, Ballarat and the local district, Bendigo and surrounds, Wilson's Promontory, and the Central Research Farm at Werribee. The Ballarat Teachers' College opened at Dana Street Primary School in 1926. From 1927-1931 it was conducted at the Ballarat East Town Hall. Returning to Dana Street Primary School in 1946 to 1955, and eventually was held in a costume built facility in Gillies street from 1955 to 1976. In 1976 pre-service teacher training was moved to the Ballarat College of Advanced Education at Mt Helen Campus. This image was hung in the corridor of the School of Education (Mount Helen). It most probably dates from around the time of the transfer of Ballarat Teachers' College to the Mount Helen Campus of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. 8th Light Horse conducted a training camp at Corowa Showground in September 1939. The 8th Light Horse AIF was disbanded in 1919, but soon after re-raised as the 8th (Indi) Light Horse in the Citizen Military Forces, superseding 16th (Indi) Light Horse. It had its headquarters at Benalla with sub-units throughout the Upper Murray and Northeast Victoria. In December 1941, the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. Photo taken of eager Junior Legatee’s on their arrival at Lord Somers Camp. The date is unknown. Summer camps were conducted at Somers Camp, Somers, Victoria, for many years for the children of deceased ex-servicemen. The camps started back in the early days of Legacy when the founder of Legacy, Stan Savige, had a beach side property in Balnarring (Palm Beach, Somers) that he allowed to be used for summer camps and outings by Legacy. Initially there were outings and picnics. In the 1930s permanent camp buildings were erected. There was an official handover of a long leasehold to Legacy and formal documents are in the archive.A record of the camps run by Melbourne Legacy for the children.
