Sirius, Diversions on an Original Theme Sheet Music Frank Wright Boosey & Hawkes Ltd Molenaar ...Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.1). This includes the original thirty-one page handwritten Full Military Band Score of 'Sirius, Diversions on an Original Theme' arranged by Frank Wright. It was written in pen in small, neat writing. 2). There is also a copied Full Orchestral Score, which was originally hand written in the style of the era. 3). As well there are two distinct copies of all the printed parts for the music, one in portrait by Boosey & Hawkes Brass Band Journal 4). and the other in landscape by Molenaar. 5). The Molenaar edition also includes one large buff coloured edition of the printed music, 6). one blue covered printed edition of the music 7). and four small paper copies of the music. 8). On the left side of the casing there is a spherometer dial which says, 'Dr Rogers Tycos'. Above the casing, there is brass instrumentation including a cylinder with graph paper attached with a needle and an upright glass bottle with brass stopper containing purple ink. The instrument has a 'home-made' look about it. It is possible that Dr Paul Mitchell may have assembled this apparatus himself. Dr Paul Mitchell had made his own "colposcope" using a hospital iv stand, half a pair of binoculars and an improvised light source. The item dates back to the 1970s. Presumably the cost of a colposcope from Germany may have been prohibitively expensive for some gynaecologists in Australia.On the left side of the casing there is a spherometer dial which has an inscription that says 'Dr Rogers Tycos'. -

Field parties utilised Texas Instruments TI4100 Global Positioning System receivers. ...Field parties utilised Texas Instruments TI4100 Global Positioning System receivers. ...This is a set of 16 photographs taken during 4th Field Survey Squadron’s deployment on Operation ARIGHT 91 in Queensland from the 8th of July to the 5th of September 1991. The area of operations was the top end of the Cape York Peninsula, islands of the Torres Strait and the southern coast of PNG. Field parties utilised Texas Instruments TI4100 Global Positioning System receivers. Concurrent with GPS operations Doppler point positioning observations were carried out by field parties using Magnavox MX 1502 receivers on six of the control points. Two Bell UH-1H Iroquois helicopters from RAAF’s 171 COMD and Liaison Squadron were primarily used to deploy GPS field parties. Identification photography of control points was taken by air camera operators in AAAvn Pilatus Porter aircraft from 173 Gen Spt Sqn fitted with an RC10 aerial camera.This is a set of 16 photographs taken in 1991 during 4th Field Survey Squadron’s deployment on Operation ARIGHT in Queensland. Instrument Letter Scale ...This scale was owned by Dr Angus, whose training and experience included chemistry and pharmacy. This is a sliding balance scale. The object to be weighed, such as a letter or a dose of medicine, is placed on the square metal plate and the weight, the slider, is moved along the notched metal arm and adjusted until the arm is horizontal, then reading is recorded of the figure the pointer on the slider is positioned. This design of small is often referred to as a letter scale. This item was donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by the family of Doctor William Roy Angus, Surgeon and Oculist. It is part of the “W.R. Angus Collection” that includes historical medical equipment, surgical instruments and material once belonging to Dr Edward Ryan and Dr Thomas Francis Ryan, (both of Nhill, Victoria) as well as Dr Angus’ own belongings. The Collection’s history spans the medical practices of the two Doctors Ryan, from 1885-1926 plus that of Dr Angus, up until 1969.The scale is significant as an example of 20th century measuring and weighing equipment. It is also important for its association with the W.R. Angus Collection, which is significant for still being located at the site it is connected with, Doctor Angus being the last Port Medical Officer in Warrnambool. The collection of medical instruments and other equipment is culturally significant, being a historical example of medicine, administration, household equipment and clothing from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries. Dr Angus assisted Dr Tom Ryan, a pioneer in the use of X-rays and in ocular surgery. Scale; a small sliding balance letter scale. The scale has a flat metal platform and a toothed metal balance arm with cylindrical brass weight. These are attached to a decorative metal stand that is mounted onto a shaped lacquered black wooden base. The sliding weight causes the arm to pivot on the stand. The arm is marked into equal-length segments from 0 to 8. Each segment is marked into halves. There is no maker’s mark. The scale is part of the W.R. In 1834, now trading as Bliss & Creighton, he made and marketed chronometers and other items for navigational use. The firm became John Bliss & Son in 1855 and John Bliss & Co. in 1857. It remained in business until 1957. Truman Hotchkiss, a sea captain from Stratford, Connecticut, designed a mechanical Taff rail log in which the recording mechanism was placed on taffrail (or upper part of the stern) of the ship. After acquiring the rights to Hotchkiss’s patents of 1864 and 1867, John Bliss & Co. began advertising the "American Patent Taffrail Log." The firm also offered mechanical logs based on patents granted to John Bliss, Jnr and his brother George, as well as English instruments based on Massey’s and Walker’s patents.The SPECULANT is historically significant as the largest ship to have been registered in Warrnambool, and is believed to have been the largest barquentine to visit Melbourne. At the time, one of the mainstays of treatment was to collapse an infected lung and allow lesions to heal. The needle was introduced as a safer technique to give patients such pneumothoraces. It was not until 1938, when he published his invention in the German literature, that the needle became more broadly known outside of Hungary. There is a round protrusion at the bottom of the bulbous connection point, and a small oval shaped grip at the top of this point, running parallel to the body of the instrument. A metal barrel containing the spring sits adjacent to the connection point. The barrel can be unscrewed to access the spring inside. The oval shaped grip on the shorter needle is engraved with the text 'WISAP/W. GERMANY'. The oval shaped grip on the longer needle is engraved with the number '3'.
