[from EDHS Newsletter No. 51, November 1986:] RECENT ACTIVITIES: The associated events of the September meeting and the bus trip to Gulf Station and Toolangi proved quite successful. Caroline Phillips' talk and slides on Gulf Station were an excellent preparation for the trip. The bus trip was at a more leisurely pace than some we have done. There was adequate time to explore Gulf Station and its re-created old world garden. We also had time to visit the Coranderrk Aboriginal Cemetery at Healesville on the way to Toolangi. At Toolangi we were treated to an excellent guided tour of the "Singing Garden" of C.J. Dennis by Jan Williams, proprietor of the Arden Tea Rooms. As well as describing the various features of the gardens, Jan was able to introduce many anecdotes about the famous poet and his wife (who seemed to have a major responsibility for the creation of the gardens).Colour photographactivities, gulf station -

The Orbost football club players were known as the Busters and wore green and gold guernseys. An Orbost football team has participated in the East Gippsland League since the early 20th century. In 2003 in response to a dwindling population, the Snowy Rovers and Orbost Football Clubs were driven to merge into the Orbost Snowy Rovers Football clubs, through their many changes, have always been an important social fabric of the community. Sport is often regarded as an important part of life in rural Australia, contributing to community identity, sense of place, social interaction and good health.A black / white photograph of men playing football. black and white photograph, VR Printing Works, 1975
This is one of a set of six photographs taken for the Victorian Railways Magazine, a pamphlet produced for Victorian Railways. t contains photographs and an article about Orbost as "Timber Country" and a detailed article titled, " Cutting Sleepers is a Family Business" which tells about the Donchi family The man in the photograph is Pat Donchi, a member of the Donchi family, who have been involved in the sleeper - cutting industry since the 1890s. This item is associated with the timber and sleeper-cutting industry in the Orbost Region. Timber sleepers were superceded by concrete sleepers in c. 1970s. Orbost has historically been based on the timber industry, but that industry has declined considerably over the last 20 years. The number of locals involved in the timber industry has declined and many of the mills have closed. This item reflects a time when that industry was a significant contributor to the economy of the district.A black / white photograph of a sleeper cutter at work swinging a broad axe.on back - Pr 8765timber-industry-orbost sleeper-cutting-orbost donchi-family -

Order of Service, Le Pine Funerals (Eltham), In Loving Memory of Douglas Frederick Orford 22nd August 1929 - 8th July 2024, 2024
Doug Orford, was a life member of the Eltham District Historical Society (EDHS), whose family has resided in the district since 1854. Doug was actively involved in EDHS over so many years, in so many ways, including as a committee member and vice president. Contributions by Doug and Gwen, his wife, assisted EDHS to continue to develop as a not-for-profit group intent on promoting and preserving our local history. His significant work with assisting to establish our valued Local History Centre helped develop our home base and supported the continued growth of our society. Doug’s local knowledge, suggestions and family connections were highly valued, Until recent times, he continued to regularly attend our Collections Team workshops providing his insights and historical information about photographs and society records. The Orford family arrived in Sydney, NSW, aboard the ship Orestes in 1839. Thomas Orford arrived in Eltham at the age of six in 1854. He lived all of his life in Eltham, living in a slab hut by the Yarra at Laughing Waters and managing the Panton Park Estate, a selection owned by Magistrate Thomas Panton. Thomas’s son, Ernest Orford was born 1892 at Pitt Street, Eltham and also lived his entire life in Eltham working as a labourer, orchardist and later as a gardener and grounds keeper for Sir William Irvine, a former Chief Justice and Premier of Victoria. Ernest’s son, Doug, was born on the kitchen table of the family home at the corner of Reynolds Road and Mount Pleasant Road and apart from a couple of years he too lived most of his almost 95 years in Eltham, the most recent decades in Napoleon Street. Doug died peacefully July 8, 2024, and represents the last link in the Orford Eltham chain which spanned 170 years. His funeral was held Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Le Pine Funerals, 848 Main Road, Eltham.doug orford, douglas frederick orford, funeral service, le pine funeral home, order of service, eltham district historical society, life member, pioneer family -

Album - Album page, Presentation Convent (ex "Cambria), Neerim Road, Circa 1972
This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. References cited above indicate that Cambria was demolished around 1974-1976 (2 dates given). Caulfield's Built Heritage states it was built for Cyril Godby with the National Trust (Victorian Heritage Database) saying it was built in 1888.Page 144 of Photograph Album with two photographs (one portrait, one landscape) of Presentation Convent, Neerim Road.Handwritten: Presentation Convent (ex- "Cambria") Neerim Road [top] / 144 [bottom right]trevor hart, presentation sisters, cambria, presentation convent, roseberry grove, glen huntly, neerim road, convent, victorian, polychrome bricks, mansions, gates, verandahs, balconies, towers, lookouts, cyril godby, house names
