Remains of the old Warrandyte Dairy — Originally constructed to store milk for delivery from Mapleoak Dairies, delivered by the Bellinger family, up until the early 1970s. The Warrandyte Dairy closed in 1987 before the land and building was purchased by Melbourne Water in 1988 to reduce flood risk to the community and preserve riverside land from development on the site which sits on the Yarra River flood plain. At the crossover between placemaking and public art, this space designed and constructed by Katherine Masiulanis embeds local stories to enliven the local community centre. Masiulanis has designed the public artwork to reflect the lines of crops and ploughed fields and mountains in the surrounding landscape. The artwork also refers to the seasonal travel of Aboriginal people from Wendouree to Burrumbeet and migratory birds making a similar journey. The style of the refurbished courtyard will reflect the 1970s positivity style reflected in the Community Centre architectural design and the history of the first development of the ‘Village’. Cardigan Village is home to about 450 residents on the outskirts of Ballarat. A history of three La Trobe University student union activists in the early 1970s - Brian Pola, Barry York and Fergus Robinson - who disobeyed the University's order to stay off campus. They were subsequently imprisoned at Pentridge Prison for several months although no criminal charges were made known. The account of on-campus student politics is fascinating and complex in comparison to contemporary student unionism. At the time of their release and to date, the University has not apologised to the "La Trobe Three" for what happened. The book is written by Barry York who was one of the "La Trobe Three"; it was published in the year of La Trobe University's 25th anniversary. The house was variously known as ‘Mintaro’, ‘Montiere’ and ‘Goonoo Goonoo’, the later after 1920 when it was purchased by Natale Cerini and his wife Ethel May (nee Swan), who were married in 1918. Built 1887-1888 by William Wigley. The original colour was deep cream with dark green trim. Property included a block of land on south side and also land to the north. The original coach house was on what became 213 Union Road and was used to build a yacht in by the then neighbours, the Flemings. The street plane trees were replaced in the 1970s with melaleucas and in 1987 new plane trees were planted between the melaleucas. Ken SEARLE (1951- ) Born Sydney, New South Wales Ken Searle worked on this commission through 1997 and 1998. Further works and sketches relating to this commission are held by the Art Gallery of Ballarat. Searle is a self-taught artist who first exhibited his paintings and drawings in the mid-1970s and is known for large, and often whimsical, paintings, of suburban and industrial areas in several Australian cities. From 1998 to 2001 Searle worked as a consultant at the school in the Aboriginal community of Papunya, Central Australia. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club. As the population of Wodonga grew in the late 1960s and 1970s, development focussed on the central section of High Street. The Wodonga Mall was built in 1969 on the corner of Stanley and High Streets in Wodonga and was the location of a variety of small businesses including a chemist and Sarroff's Dry Cleaners.This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to the community throughout the 20th century. The Falls Creek Search and Rescue Squad was formed in the mid 1970s. It was partly instigated by Rob Spargo whose family purchased the site where the Falls Creek Hotel is today. The family was instrumental in the establishment and growth of the Falls Creek community and were involved in the foundation of Falls Creek Primary School and Falls Creek Search & Rescue (now Falls Creek SES). Rob was also involved in the start-up of Ski Victoria and has served as a member the Chamber and Resort Management Board. The Warrnambool Co-operative had its beginnings as the Allansford Artificial Breeders Co-operative in the 1960's. In the 1970s they opened a retail store in Timor Street which had a strong rural and farming base which gradually expanded to become the largest trading department store in the district. By the late 1990's they had 8000 members and employed 84 full time and 120 casual staff. It met a sorry end in the 2000's.This plaque commemorates the opening of the Rural store which consolidated the large rural aspect of the business. It opened up the site from Merri Street at the back of the Timor Street building trading in all agricultural products, , chemicals and fuels.A link to one of Warrnambool's largest stores of the latter part of the 20th century and as such it has historical and social significance. This bottle comes from the Warrnambool aerated waters factory of Ralph Reeves. This business was established in Koroit Street, Warrnambool in the 1860s as the Union Cordial Factory by John Davis and then bought by John Fletcher in 1885. Fletcher’s business continued until 1930 when it was bought by Ralph Reeves. Coming to Warrnambool about 1900 Reeves had managed a Banyan Street, Warrnambool factory which had been established by John Rowley. Reeves was joined by his son Reg in Warrnambool and Reg operated the business from 1946 to 1972. The trade name of Reeves was still used after Reg Reeves died in the early 1970s and continued on for some years. This bottle is of interest as an example of an early Reeves bottle. We have few Reeves bottles with the original paper labels. Cordial manufacturing in Warrnambool was an important industry for over 100 years.This is a clear glass bottle with a rounded base and rounded body tapering to a short round neck with a moulded glass top at the opening. The screw stopper is black and made of composite material. The inside of the bottle is discoloured. The details of the manufacturer of the contents are impressed into the glass on the side and there is a paper label pasted on the side of the bottle (black, red, yellow tonings) ‘R.V. Owned at the time by architect, Ian Jelbart, the property had been in the Jelbart family since the 1940s; a 5560sqm secluded hilltop parcel in Eltham. When the manor house and its barn were built, Eltham was a rural community; Jelbart’s grandfather Ronald was a businessman whose poultry farm formed part of the family’s original 100ha holding. A portion would later be subdivided into residential lots to make way for new homes that would form the basis of the Woodridge Estate in the early 1970s. The Barn was developed as a residence by Ian Jelbart in the late 1960;'s. Handmade mud bricks were used in its construction. This nail was recovered from the wreck of the Cataraqui in the 1970s. The nail is most likely to have been machine cut and the head hand formed by a blacksmith. THE CATARAQUI The Cataraqui, which was built in 1840 in Quebec, Canada, and wrecked in 1845 off King Island, Australia. The lives of 400 people on the emigrant ship were lost. Many of them were on government assisted passages from Britain and Ireland. Only nine people, one passenger and eight crew, survived the shipwreck. A man who lived on the island, sheltered them and five weeks later the group was rescued by the ship Midge, which took them to Melbourne. It was the largest civilian maritime disaster. The nail is significant as an example of the hardware used in the mid-19th century for ship building. This uniform was worn by Lieutenant Colonel J Allard who commanded 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles 1959-1962. Col Allard had served in the pre-WW2 militia, then in 2/4th Armoured Regiment (AIF). Following the war he joined the CMF and served as 2i/c 4/19 PWLH prior to taking command of 8/13 VMR. He maintained close contact with the Regimental Association and following his death in October 2018 at age 98 his family donated this uniform to the museum. The uniform was known as 'mess undress' but served as formal winter dress until 'mess dress' was made available in 1970s. During these years Max Coward was described as a cartoonist and illustrator, and was attached to the Naval Intelligence Division in 1945, producing stories and drawings for the Navy newspaper Dit. His work was reproduced in the Christmas annual, HMAS Mk IV and the Army educational journal, Salt. Coward was active as a printmaker in the 1970s. Craig HARRISON Dr Craig Harrison has held solo exhibitions regularly since the mid-1970s, including curated exhibitions at the La Trobe University, Australian Catholic University, and the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery. He was a finalists in a number of prestigious awards and prizes, including the Dobell Prize for Drawing (2010, NSW), and the Rick Amor Prize for Drawing (2016, Ballarat). Craig Harrison is also a respected art educator, who had taught fine art at the Deakin Univerity, MLC, and ACU between 1975 and 2004. Braun was originally founded in Germany in 1921, making components for radio sets. After World War 2 they extended their range to include audio and camera equipment. By the 1950s and 1960s the company branched out into electric shavers, kitchen appliances and hair care products. Home hair styling sets and hot rollers became popular in the 1960s and continued to be an important woman's styling appliance throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1975 this product was advertised at a price of $37.95. From 1984 until 2007, Braun was a wholly owned subsidiary of Gillette, which had purchased a controlling interest in the company in 1967. Braun is now a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble, which acquired Gillette in 2005.Personal grooming items such as this became important personal accessories and grooming tools for women throughout the mid 20th century across Australia.This hair styler set contains 20 hair rollers which were heated by placing them on the 20 heating posts fitted inside the unit in the case. An electric cord supplied was attached to an electric socket. A red dot on top of each posts darkened when the rollers were sufficiently heated. A detailed instruction booklet is included. North east Victoria was a major dairy producing region in the late nineteenth century. The Wodonga Butter Factory Ltd was established in 1892. Many families living in the town or on farms also owned their own cow for family needs and produced their milk and butter. This churn is representative of the equipment they used to process their own dairy products at home. This churn was made by E. Cherry & Sons which was established in Gisborne, Victoria in 1858. Edward Cherry (1830-1910) arrived in Australia from Hertfordshire, England, in 1855. The business manufactured churns and in 1875 opened a larger factory. On his death, the business was taken over by his son and continued to operate until the 1970s.This item has strong links to the history of Wodonga and north east Victoria. It has interpretative potential in the areas of local agricultural history, and the social history of food and farming.A wooden butter churn with metal turning handle and removable lid. From the 1940s Melbourne Legacy ran residences for children of deceased servicemen. In the 1980s it was decided to sell the final property as the requirement for care had dwindled. These photos show the auction day at Blamey House (previously known as Harelands), from the street the auction flag and 'For Sale' sign can be seen. The photos show a large group of people watching the auction names are unknown. The property at 5 Willesmere Rd Kew was formerly known as Harelands. It was renamed Blamey House when the previous Blamey House (at 1267 Burke Road) was sold in late 1970s. A very unique screwdriver or turn screw possibly used by a Ship Builder, Railroad Engineer or other tradesman in need of a long reach. The handle shape or pattern indicates it could have been made by G Pearson later F G Pearson Sheffield at the Hope Works. This company was established in 1854 and by 1914 the company was manufacturing many differing types of edge tools, joiners' tools, forks and garden tools. Their specialities were hay, manure and coke forks, punches, armourers' tools etc. In 1938 the Company was styled F. G. Pearson and Co (Sheffield) Ltd and they were still making plane and other sharp edged blades as late as 1957, but by the 1970s they had gone out of business. A significant company based in Sheffield England and making tools of all types and exporting same to various countries around the world. This particular item is a vintage and unusual screwdriver possibly used by a local Warrnambool tradesman. Screw driver wooden handle. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society was housed since the early 1970s in the old caretaker’s cottage in Gilles Street (called today History House). While History House was being renovated the Historical Society, in association with the Warrnambool Family History Group, was housed in the Mechanics Institute building at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum. In 2013 new buildings were placed at the rear of Mozart Hall next to History House and called Heritage Works. The two groups moved from Flagstaff Hill late in 2013 and the new facility was officially opened in March 2014 by the Premier of Victoria, Dr Denis Napthine. Sawfish use their rostrum to access their food or pray by moving their heads from sided to side. They also use their rostrum as a defensive weapon. Some sawfish can grow as long as seven metres. They inhabit tropical and subtropical waters of the ocean, rivers and estuaries. They can live from 25 up to even 30 years.
