This is a 1968 newsletter of the City of Warrnambool Theatre Group. It gives information on the forthcoming Summer School of Drama held in Melbourne, the group’s Dinner Dance, a play reading of the play, ‘J.B.’ and the group’s next production, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’. The secretary of the group at the time was Ian Hill. Warrnambool has had a great number of community drama societies and groups since the 1860s and the City of Warrnambool Theatre Group has been putting on local stage productions since 1948. Two prominent members of the group were Cyril and Joyce Hayward. Today the group is called the Warrnambool Theatre Company. This newsletter is of interest as an example of an early newsletter from a prominent and important amateur theatre group in Warrnambool. These are two sheets of foolscap paper folded in three places for postage purposes. One page has the postal address of the recipient, two pages have black typing and one page is blank. The front page with the address has a red stamp and postal franking. Originally the two sheets were stapled together but the staples have been removed. The pages have yellowed with age.‘Mrs D. This book belonged to Charles Rogers. Captain Charles Rogers was an Australian Army officer in the 4th Lighthorse Regiment. He was part of the mounted Guard of Honour during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934. The visit was part of Victoria’s centenary celebrations and the duke officially opened the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Charles Rogers was well-known as a Warrnambool resident in the 1930s, 40s and 50s and was often seen on horseback leading parade and celebrations in the city. He as a long-serving Warrnambool Agricultural Show official as a judge of equine events. He died in 1961. This book is of interest, firstly as an example of a military handbook for cavalry officers and secondly because it belonged to Captain Charles Rogers, an army officer (Lighthorse regiment) who was a well-known resident of Warrnambool in the early to mid 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 198 pages. It has a yellow cover with black printing on the spine. Most of the pages are white, with several pink pages at the beginning and the end. This cup and saucer set was issued as a souvenir of the opening of the Federal Parliament in Canberra in 1927. The building was opened by Prince Albert, the Duke of York who was accompanied by Elizabeth, the Duchess of York. The Duke of York later became King George VI of England. The colonies in Australia became Federated States in 1901 and from that date to 1927 the Australian Federal Parliament sat in Melbourne. When Canberra became the capital of Australia a Parliament House building was erected at a cost of £600,000 but it is now known as Old Parliament House as the present Parliament House was opened in 1988. This cup and saucer set is of interest as a memento of an important event in Australia’s history – the creation of a capital city and the opening of the first Federal Parliament House. It will be useful for display. This is a white china cup and saucer set. Both the cup and saucer have two gold bands around the rims and are decorated with black ornamentation and the portraits of the Duke and Duchess of York contained within gold oval patterns. This plate comes from the Commercial Hotel in Warrnambool. This hotel, situated on the north west corner of Liebig and Timor Streets, Warrnambool, was established in 1865. It was built by Thomas Mickle and the first licensee was Charles Anderson. From 1928 on the O’Dwyer family was associated with the Commercial Hotel, either as licensees or owners, for fifty years. The plate would have been first used during the times when Patrick O’Dwyer was the licensee – 1928-1931 and 1932 to 1934. Today the Commercial Hotel still trades as the Whalers Hotel.This plate is of interest as it is a memento of the 1920s and 30s when Patrick O’Dwyer was the licensee of the Commercial Hotel. This hotel, trading today as the Whalers Hotel, is the oldest hotel in Warrnambool and a prominent landmark in the city. This is a white china plate (dinner plate size) with the inner section slightly recessed. The plate has a black line around the outer rim and initials and a hotel name in a scroll pattern on one outer edge. This plate comes from the Hotel Mansions in Warrnambool. This building was opened in 1890 as the Grand Ozone Coffee Palace (a temperance hotel) and was at the corner of Koroit and Kepler Streets in Warrnambool. It was built by a company of local businessmen and leased out. In 1891 the Coffee Palace was granted a wine licence. In 1895 Thomas Randall was the proprietor of the building and it was re-named the Ozone Hotel. The building was closed in 1915 and re-opened in 1920 as the Hotel Mansions. In 1923 the Hotel Mansions became a fully-licensed hotel. In 1929 it was destroyed by fire and the present day Hotel Warrnambool was built on the site. This plate is of considerable significance because it is one of the few items we have from the Hotel Mansions in Warrnambool. The Grand Ozone Coffee Palace/Ozone Hotel/Hotel Mansions was the grandest building ever erected in Warrnambool. Its destruction by fire was a major loss to the city. This is a white plate made of vitrified china (bread and butter plate size). It has a charcoal-black rim around the outer edge and a black monogram and scroll on the outer edge of the plate. There are a couple of small stains on the upper part of the plate and on the base. There is information on the maker and supplier on the base as well as a crown symbol.‘H.M. This ceremonial regalia belonged to Captain Charles Rogers of the Australian Army (Light Horse Regiment). He wore this regalia when he was part of the mounted Guard of Honour during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934. The visit was part of Victoria’s Centenary celebrations and the Duke officially opened the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Charles Rogers was a well-known Warrnambool identity in the 1930s, 40s and 50s as a horseman and Army identity and he and his horse frequently led parades and celebrations in the city. He was a long-serving Warrnambool Agricultural Show official as a judge of equine events. Rogers died in 1961. These items are of great interest as examples of the regalia worn by Australian military personnel in the 1930s. They are also good mementos of Charles Rogers, a notable personality in Warrnambool in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.1 This is a piece of ceremonial regalia worn over the shoulder and called an aigullette. It has a plaited silver-coloured cord ending in silver metal tagged points. The metal points or stakes are highly decorated. The cords also have an accompanying smaller silver-coloured cord and another attachment of cord with an end of interwoven material in the shape of an elongated pear or acorn. The item is a little tarnished. .2 These are epaulettes worn on the shoulder. One is attached to the aigullette and the other is detached. The belt has a cloth-covered metal clasp. There are two tassels hanging from the clasp area with beige and maroon threads with tops covered in silver mesh. This cup was produced by Ken Sadler as a souvenir of the 150th anniversary of the settlement of Warrnambool. Ken Sadler was a potter in Liebig Street, Warrnambool for many years (end of 20th century and beginning of 21st century). Warrnambool was founded as a planned town in 1847 to provide port facilities for the produce of squatters who had settled in the area. The town centre was surveyed by William Pickering at the request of Superintendent La Trobe of Melbourne and the first land sales were held in Melbourne in July 1847. The celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Warrnambool included concerts, race meetings, church services and the erection of an anniversary tablet on Cannon Hill. Ken Sadler, a well-known Warrnambool potter, made 500 of these cups which are now collectible souvenirs of the city’s 150th anniversary celebrations. This one retained by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society is numbered 189. The 150th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool was an important event in the city’s history.This is a ceramic cup with a round base and larger rounded body with a round overhanging rim at the top opening. The cup is mottled green with an impressed image of a ship and lettering in white, gold and brown. This shield was a trophy awarded to the lodges of the Independent Order of Oddfellows in the 1960s. The first Warrnambool Lodge of the I.O.O.F. was established in 1860 (Loyal Victorian Lodge) and the Oddfellows Hall in Koroit Street Warrnambool was opened in 1869. One winner of the shield, apart from the Loyal Warrnambool Lodge, was the Loyal Aurora Lodge and the only reference found to a lodge of this name was based in North Melbourne. No information has been found on Frank D. Grayham. This shield is of interest as a trophy given by the Independent Order of Oddfellows in the 1960s. The I.O.O.F. in Warrnambool has been of historical importance in the social and business spheres in the city. This is a wooden shield with a central metal plaque attached and six other smaller metal plaques. The central plaque has an ornamental edging and the plaques are attached with metal pins. This badge commemorates the awarding to Warrnambool in 1928 of the title of Victoria's Ideal Town. This was an award sponsored by the Sun News-Pictorial Melbourne newspaper and 1927-8 was the first year of the award. Warrnambool celebrated the win with a week's celebrations in February 1928 of street processions and entertainments in the Botanic Gardens . The badge is of considerable interest as a memento of the year 1928 when Warrnambool won the title of Victoria's Ideal Town Circular metal concave badge featuring an image of Thunder Point surrounded by a royal blue border with text. These riding pants belonged to Captain Charles Rogers of the Australian Army (Light Horse unit). He was part of the mounted Guard of Honour during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934 when, during the Victorian centenary celebrations, the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance was opened. Charles Rogers was well-known in Warrnambool in the 1930s, 40s and 50s as a horseman and Army member. He was often seen on horseback leading parades and celebrations in the city and was a long-serving Warrnambool Agricultural Show official as a judge of equine events. He died in 1961. The drapery and clothing store of Cramond and Dickson was founded in Warrnambool by John Cramond and James Dickson in 1855 and was a prominent business in Warrnambool until its closure in 1973. A branch of the store was opened in London in the late 1860s and was managed for some years by James Dickson. These riding pants are of interest because they belonged to Captain Charles Rogers, a Victorian Light Horse Regiment member and a well-known horseman in Warrnambool. The item is also important because it came from the well-known Warrnambool store, Cramond & DicksonThese are khaki riding pants. The knees are reinforced with extra stitching and the back of the waist has two buttons on a raised section and four buttons on the waist itself for the attachment of braces. The front opening has five buttons and the garment has two deep side pockets. The top of the garment is lined inside with brown material. This book by Carolyn Rasmussen contains biographical material on Maurice Blackburn and his wife Doris. Maurice Blackburn was the founder of the Melbourne legal firm with a business still operating today under that name. Maurice and Doris Blackburn were prominent 20th century independent Labor politicians and community activists, influencing conscription laws, benefits for working men and women, atomic bomb tests, civil rights and indigenous recognition. They had friends in Warrnambool and enjoyed visiting the city on a regular basis. This book is of historical interest as a biographies of two well-known Victorian politicians of the 20th century and is of minor local interest as the Blackburns were regular visitors to Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book of 400 pages. The black cover has red lettering on the spine and the dust cover is black, red and grey with photographs of a man’s suit and a man and a woman. As the title states this book provides sketches of Melbourne life in light and shade. It was written in 1877 and published by George Robertson . It is one of a series and this edition covers the following: A night in the model lodging -House, A day in the Immigrants' Home, A morning at the Hospital, Three days in the Benevolent Asylum, Our Lunatic Asylums, Sixpenny restaurants and The Theatre Vestibules. Throughout all he comments on the social situations and dilemmas in which he finds himself and which others must endure.The Vagabond Papers provides a valuable record of life in Melbourne in the 1870's. It is not always the view of Melbourne as a prosperous and developing city which is presented but it is experienced first hand by the author to which he also imparts social commentary on the many difficult situations. Remains of the old Warrandyte Dairy — Originally constructed to store milk for delivery from Mapleoak Dairies, delivered by the Bellinger family, up until the early 1970s. The Warrandyte Dairy closed in 1987 before the land and building was purchased by Melbourne Water in 1988 to reduce flood risk to the community and preserve riverside land from development on the site which sits on the Yarra River flood plain. Painted for the Shire of Eltham Historical Society by Audrey Cahn, a member of our Society for many years and Vice President till 1978. Audrey was the sister of the late Charis Palling, founding president of our Society. She had remained a member for many years although she had moved from her family home at Warrandyte to live with her daughter in New South Wales. Audrey had been blind for some years but maintained a local interest by having our Newsletter read to her. Audrey's associations with Warrandyte started because her father Professor Osbourne had bought 60 acres in 1904. " Gold mining was beginning to die out and Warrandyte was a decaying area. Land was cheap because of the lack of transport and the soil was poor for farming” Audrey said. Audrey first attended school in the city at the Church of England Girls Grammar School and was always a bit rebellious. “If I felt some restrictions were unfair or some judgement unjust, I resented it”. Audrey got into Agricultural Science at Melbourne University and in 1928 was the second women to get such a degree. Audrey married in 1926, and later divorced Leslie Cahn an architect. They had twin daughters whom she left with her parents in Warrandyte while she studied dietetics during the depression. She found employment as a microbiologist at the Kraft/Walker Milk and Cheese Factory in Drouin - she drove home at weekends to see her daughters who were then at boarding school. During the war Audrey was in charge of catering at the Heidelberg Military Hospital – again the appointment of a women caused some unrest. She was in the army for more than 4 years and achieved the rank of General which-made her the most highly-ranked-woman at the hospital. After the war she became a senior lecturer in Dietetics at Melbourne University, again being aware of the limitations her gender brought to promotion possibilities. During her time at the university, she undertook a series of studies in nutritional biochemistry. Of especial note is the analysis of common dietary foods so that the composition and calorific value, the data that was needed for inclusion in Food tables - that professional sports people and weight-watchers so avidly follow today! She was an early proponent of the need to reduce fat intake and to substitute saturated fats with polyunsaturated fatty acids. In the 1950's Audrey and fellow workers established norms for the growth of Australian children to be compared with British and American children. Over 17 years they concluded that Australian children were overweight and inactive - what is new! She bought a cottage in Warrandyte as her home. In 1968 she retired to further develop her other interests as a potter and painter. Audrey was a foundation member of the group of potters that set up Potters Cottage. Audrey died in 2008 aged 102. Glynn’s farm Originally Section 7, Parish of Nillumbik marked Aborigine Reserve in 1866 Crown Allotment 8, Section 7, Parish of Nillumbik, County of Evelyn, Certificate of Title Volume 4095, Folio 818.835, approx. 93 acres purchased by Joseph Panton in 1881 for £1/acre and known as Panton’s Point. By 1924 owned by S.S. Sergeant and called Riverswood. Sergeant commissioned Edna Walling to design the garden. In September 1929 the property was sold at auction by Mortgagee’s sale. Described as well built, brick, tile roof, Attic Villa containing downstairs 7 good rooms, bath, scullery, inside lavatory, etc. Upstairs 2 bedrooms and sleep out. Outbuildings compromising of brick and weatherboard wash house, stables, workshop, feed room, cow bails, large G.I. Hay shed, etc In January 1931 Riverswood property was proclaimed a sanctuary for native game for the entire year. A private swing bridge crossed the river at Pound Bend was known as Pearson’s bridge after C.W.K. Pearson who bought Riverswood in the early 1930s. The bridge was swept away in the December 1934 floods. Riverswood was sold by C.W.K. Pearson at auction on 25 November 1936. Described as a beautiful farm home of 93 acres and over one mile of River Yarra frontage, modern brick residence, lovely garden, rich river flat pastures, model poultry farm. The fine brick home was destroyed on Black Friday (13 Jan.) 1939. It was still a ruin when the Evelyn Evans purchased Waikowhane above Riverswood in 1940. The Glynn family purchased the Riverswood property in 1941 from Robert and Emily Hannon. Their son Kenneth Patrick Glynn inherited the property and he set about clearing the land during WW2 selling wood. Prior to marriage, Kenneth was living alone on the farm in a house he had built from whatever was available. He used the bluestone foundations from the original fine brick home. He met and married Honora Elizabeth Drew in early 1945 and their daughter Anna grew up on the farm. It was compulsorily acquired by the Board of Works in 1976 who then rented the house out in the 1980s. The property was transferred to Melbourne Parks and Waterways in 1996. Waikowhane was a pretty timber house built on top of the hill on 50 acres above Riverswood by retired nurse Jessie MacBeth. (This would be at the intersection of Glynns Road and Overbank Road where the big water tank is now situated on what was once James Orford’s property.) It was also destroyed Black Friday and she rebuilt it from the plans living in a caravan on site supervising the build. It was almost complete when she died May 1939. The property was bought by Evelyn Evans (a city girl) and her estranged husband in 1940. She had two sons, one only 9 months old at the time. It was a timber house with no power or water connected. The Ewen Cameron family bought Waikowhane in 1957. They had to evacuate when the 1961 bushfires swept through. The house was saved by Matcham Skipper. This medallion was struck to commemorate both the 150th anniversary of the State of Victoria and the 125th anniverary of the City of Hawthorn. One side includes the logo and the words "VICTORIA 150". The other side includes the logo for the City of Hawthorn with the words" "125th anniversary City of Hawthorn 1860, 27 July 1985". Notes by Jock Read who donated painting to the Society: “Site of present-day Eltham Mall The property was owned by a Mr David Harbison who was connected to one of the Melbourne daily newspapers who donated the property to the City Newsboys Society to be used as they required. The property consisted of two building blocks with one four roomed house known as the Cottage. The Secretary of the City Newsboys Society decided to use the property as a Rest Home for mothers of newsboys who needed a rest and could not afford a holiday. Miss Onians added another four roomed dwelling to the home which was known as the Bungalow. Another three roomed residence was erected at the rear of the cottage for the use of the Caretaker. The rear of the property was used as a camp area for the use of Troop of Boy Scouts known as the 13th Melbourne Troop which met at the Newsboys Society Hall in Little Collins Street. Later the name of the troop was changed to City Newsboys Troop who held their Christmas camps at Eltham and Hurstbridge alternating years. In 1930 the caretaker (Mr. Francis) became ill and resigned that position. I had been a member of the scout troop and offered the position as Honorary Caretaker which I held for eight years. The Homes were used regularly as such until the death of Miss Onians. It was sold later and used as private homes until the Eltham Mall was built.” Further research has determined that apparently, Harbison left £1,000 in his will for the City Newsboys Society and the Secretary, Miss Edith Onians built the rest home from these funds. It was opened on November 12, 1919. It was during this period that a number of significant improvements were made to roads and new bridges constructed within the shire that remain in place as of present day (2022). In many situations, the photos provide a tangible visible record of infrastructure that existed throughout the early days of the Shire. Notices showing the boundary of the area of the review and advising that an investigation was to be carried out were published in the Victoria Government Gazette and in local and other Victorian newspapers in May 1987. A descriptive resources report was published in August 1991. Council received 1,425 submissions and letters following publication of the descriptive report. The Council considered these submissions and published proposed recommendations in April 1993. A further 1,993 submissions were received in response to the proposed recommendations. The Council published its final recommendations in July 1994. A change to legislation in 1989 enabled the LCC to make recommendations for public land within a ‘town’, though cities and rural cities remained excluded from the definition of public land. Timber resources and water quality and yield from timbered catchment areas remained significant issues in Melbourne’s catchments. Recommendations for the Yarra Ranges National Park were based around the closed Melbourne water catchments and adjoining state forest. A recommended Phillip Island State Park based around the penguin reserve was ultimately implemented as the Phillip Island Nature Park.Shire of Nillumbik DPE/Enviro -
