Students attended Sunday School classes at the Kergunyah Presbyterian Church. Sunday school was held in a little 16 foot square wooden building which came from Rocky Valley after it was no longer needed there. Ewen Wallace's father initiated and organised the move. C2011 the building was knocked down because of white ants. This cup was awarded in 1880 to James Dickson Junior for winning a 400 yards race. The cup was awarded by the South Norwood Athletic Club. There is a Norwood in South Australia and Scotland and a South Norwood in London. James Dickson Junior (1859-1949) was born in Warrnambool to James and Susan Dickson. His father had established a general store in Warrnambool in 1855 in partnership with John Cramond. This store, known as Cramond and Dickson, was a prominent one in Warrnambool until its closure in 1973. James Dickson managed the London branch store of Cramond and Dickson from 1870 to 1880 and James Dickson Junior lived in London during that time and went to school in Scotland. So the cup could have been won in Scotland but it is most likely from a London athletics meeting. James Dickson Junior became a senior partner in the Cramond and Dickson business and was a leading citizen in Warrnambool as a director of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory, a committeeman on the Warrnambool Hospital Board for nearly 50 years and a president of the Warrnambool Racing Club. This cup is of considerable significance as it was won by James Dickson Junior in 1880. James Dickson Junior was a prominent businessman and active community worker in Warrnambool for more than 50 years.This is a silver cup or trophy with a maker’s symbol and four other hallmarks. This bottle of liquid floor polish was manufactured before 1960(taken over by Wattyl) in a period when most of the floors in high traffic areas were covered in linoleum. Most of the floors using this product during this period would have been kitchens and laundries. During this period the cleanliness of the kitchen, hallways and eateries had to appear clean (cleanliness was a sign of a bacteria free area). This was a priority for kitchens, mess areas(SEC Hydro Scheme facilities) and connecting walkways. The cleanliness attitude was enhanced in the rural areas due to the "dirty" farm work not impinging upon the residential home.When Mount Beauty was first inhabited all the residential and worker's facilities were a prime area for linoleum floor surfaces. The liquid floor polish was in great demand, "a polished floor is a clean floor".This bottle of liquid floor polish is very significant to the Kiewa Valley, not only that it covers the floors of every home and residential barracks of the first major development of a "town" now known as Mount Beauty but also it demonstrates that the "cleanliness" approach of early Australians living areas in the rural regions was "on par" with its city cousins. It is the smaller types of mores that underlie the "mushrooming" cultural and psyche "wholeness" of an ever expanding Australian culture.This brown opaque glass bottle with an oblong shape has a blue coloured "screw on" cap. This Item is one of four bedroom items hand made in circa 1900 by Amalihe Pierin. Her Son brought the item when he emigrated to Australia and members of the family still reside in the Kiewa Valley. Historically this item represents the requirement by families to manufacture a whole range of bedroom coverings due to the lack of professionally manufactured goods. Isolation from big towns or cities required local seamstress activities and therefore closer social bonding was a necessity.
