Domestic object - meat safe, circa 1920s
... churchill island...Churchill Island Heritage Farm 246 Samuel Amess Drive ...Meat safes were used to keep meat and vegetables cooler before the availability of ice and then kerosene or electric refrigerators. The safe would be hung in the shade on a tree by a hook on the top,and pieces of damp hessian would be hung over each side. As the wind hits the hessian it causes the water to evaporate and the items inside the safe to stay cooler. This meant that the items inside the safe would last a day or two longer.Painted pale green safe. Rectangular grid pattern of ventilation holes with circles of ventilation holes within the pattern. Surface rust patches. Water reservoir and wire hook added later on top. Internal trays bottom and 1/2 way. Door detached - hinges rusted away. No base apart from shelf. Furniture - Armchair, child's, c. 1940s
... churchill island...Churchill Island Heritage Farm 246 Samuel Amess Drive ...This particular type of chair was also known as a Bentwood Twig Wicker Child’s chair. This process was founded by German Thomas Thonet in 1855, and involved wetting or steaming wood, then bending it and letting it harden into curved shapes and patterns. This provided a cheaper and more practical version of furniture than earlier – and heavier – hand-carved furniture.Child's armchair, slatted base and back. Domestic object - Ice Cream Maker, c. 1924
... churchill island...Churchill Island Heritage Farm 246 Samuel Amess Drive ...This ice cream maker was made by the 'Toytown Freezer Company' of Winchendon, Mass. U.S.A and was also known as ‘Everybody’s Self Freezer.’ To make the ice cream, the container was turned upside down, and the metal plate was opened, revealing a separated section. Ice was placed inside, along with some salt to prevent it from melting too quickly. The bottom plate was replaced, and the container turned upright. The top lid was removed and cream and flavouring were then placed inside and the maker was resealed. The handle – also known as a grain dasher – was turned to mix the ingredients, and the ice cream was nearly ready. Manually operated ice cream freezer. Plain wooden pail with metal lid. Furniture - Commode, 19th century
... churchill island...Churchill Island Heritage Farm 246 Samuel Amess Drive ...This is a Victorian round cedar commode seat raised on a plinth base with fluted sides. The name ‘commode’ translates in French as ‘convenient’ or ‘suitable’ and could be applied to a dressing table with water jug and bowl for washing oneself and having a cupboard underneath in which to house the chamber pot. It could also refer to a small bedside chest of drawers. In the days before indoor toilets and running water, it was common to have a chamber pot under or near the bed for use during the night or at any time for invalids. The commode seat was a decorative way of concealing the chamber pot by fitting it in a round hole under the lid with the height making it more convenient and suitable for people with limited mobility. The chamber post was removed, emptied and cleaned daily.Victorian Round cedar commode seat, raised on plinth base with fluted sides.
