John Ward came to the Warrnambool district in 1853. He established a grocery business on the corner of Jamieson Street and Canterbury Road, known as Ward's corner and later Rust's corner.He was three times Mayor of Warrnambool and was an important early historian. He compiled a history,completed in 1928, of the Warrnambool Methodist church. Rev. Ronald W. Allardice (1916-1990) was ordained in 1943 and was President of the Methodist Conference in 1968. After ordination Rev. Allardice went to Samoa, where he was Principal of the Piula Theological College. He was later District Chairman for Goulburn Valley. Harcourt Methodist Church was instrumental in forming the Harcourt Carpet Bowls Association with many members common to both organisations. This commenced about 1948 and is still in existence in 2017. The bowls were used at some church social evenings in addition to being used in the Harcourt Carpet Bowls competition. Mr. William A. Carr was the prime mover in this activity. Reminds us of the rise of post-World War II community organisations to fill the social gap left by the winding up of wartime patriotic associations. This bookmark was issued for the centenary of the Uniting Church Australia in 1949 . The church was amalgamated with the Congregational and Methodist churches to form the Uniting Church of Australia in 1977. Some congregations chose to maintain their adherence to their faith tradition and the Presbyterian Church has continued in those locations, one of which is at Ballarat where two Presbyterian church communities continue to worship as such in 2025.This bookmark is significant in that it commemorates the 1949 centenary of the Presbyterian Church in Australia.
