Souvenir is from an aircraft flown by 2LT Lewis Charles Burford Sheppard RFC, killed when his aircraft crashed on landing on the Bapaume Rd, Fremicourt in the Somme Area. A portion of a wing stay was cut from the aircraft and fashioned into a war trophy with the manufacturers logo and a hand written inscription detailing the crash on the reverse. Michael Taffe at Hymettus, Cardigan St Ballarat was awarded the Mayoral trophy for the Champion Cottage Garden, City of Ballaarat 1915 - 1918. These two photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio in 1969. The two units took turns each year to host the event and on this occasion was held at the RAAF School of Radio, Laverton. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The history of the Bones Day competition is best described in the booklet titled - Bones of Contention Souvenir Program. 1965. Refer to Item 6267. The winner of the two trophies in 1969 is not known. MAJ Donald Ridge was probably on this occasion was the 2IC of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, He was subsequently promoted to the rank of LTCOL was the CO of the unit from 1972 to 1973; and continued as the CO of the renamed Army Survey Regiment from 1974 to 1975. This photograph of Fortuna’s Darts Team was taken in the Ballroom at Fortuna Villa, Bendigo circa 1982-1983. Darts was a very popular sport played in the Army Survey Regiment’s messes for many years. Some of Fortuna’s highly skilled exponents of formed a team to participate in in the local competition held in several pubs around Bendigo. A particular triumph for Alfred Joseph Towers was his win at the Romsey and West Bourke Agricultural Society's Annual Potato Show in 1927, taking the trophy from the best potato growers in Victoria, and from the Romsey district in particular, which at that time was famed for its potato production and quality. Elmac Hydroponics operated at Allansford from 1997 to 2004, growing tomatoes hydoponically. The owners were Keith Ellerton and Graeme MacLeod. There were 2000 Square metres of hothouses with over 5000 plants. This trophy from the Victorian farm Entrepreneur Awards was for the use of a system called autopots. This system relied upon a process of automatic watering through valves at the bottom of the pots.The growing of vegetables hydoponically was a relatively new and innovative system of agriculture. The Elmac business proved that it could be done in the climate of the region. This barrel was probably used to hold ice but minus its insert could have been a biscuit barrel. In the days before refrigerators were common household items the barrel would have been a useful portable ice carrier for use in a hotel bar or at a table. The plaque on the side of the barrel suggests that the barrel could have been awarded as a trophy or prize in a sporting competition. This item has no known local provenance but is retained as an example of a household item from times past.This is a wooden barrel with silver-coloured metal bands on the top and bottom of the barrel, a metal handle and a detachable metal lid. A metal plaque is attached to the side of the barrel with metal pins. The inside of the barrel has a ceramic insert with a metal rim. Organisations that Dorothy Anderson belonged to included many items to represent their clubs eg. badges, spoons, activities eg. crocheting. Dorothy lived in Tawonga indicating that those clubs existed in the town/area and were typical of regional areas of the time. These items were the property of Tawonga Citizen, Mrs Dorothy Anderson, who passed away in 2014, aged 90 years. She belonged to local clubs which existed in the area and acquired memorabilia belonging to those clubs and activities thus giving an insight into the life of women in regional towns.
