“Warranooke” Homestead built 1867 enlarged 1926. Shows extensive gardens at front. A very early property in our district Warranooke The main names associated with the property Ayrey - Darnell - Nicoll, later Campbell. Mrs. Campbell built Charles Ayrey's daughter. The Campbells built up the station buildings. The homestead was virtually rebuilt in brick, making it one of the largest and most elaborate in the East Wimmera. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989. The book "The First of its Kind" was published in 2015. Printed in Bendigo by "Bendigo Modern Press". J.Campbell started a Draper , Outfitter and Milliner store in the Pioneer house on Percy Street in Portland Victoria in 1896. Advertisements found on Trove from November 20 1899 shows the store selling Spring goods, Millinery, Dress goods, prints, piques and muslins. Another advertisement on Trove from September 27 1907 shows the store showing their Spring and Summer Goods, including Choice Millinery, Latest Dress Fabrics, Laces and Silks, Blouses and Skirts.Paper account from J. Campbell, wholesaler and family draper to Mrs Cummings, in the sum of 4/6 for a blouse. Printed form, details handwritten in black ink top right hand corner is missing, and top left hand corner has two holes in the paper. Paper is cream and has darker brownish patches at the top. This coloured postcard with a photograph of the Exhibition Building in the centre with crossed hands above & the flags of Australia & the United States on either side was a souvenir of the visit of the Great White Fleet in 1908. There is also a representation of the Statue of Liberty on the left & the Australian Coat of Arms on the right. This interview was recorded in May 2016 as part of the Wounded Soldier exhibition. The Wounded Soldier ran in November 2016, exploring No. 11 Australian General Military Hospital (later Caulfield Hospital) and its impact on Glen Eira's community during and after the First World War. The audio file catalogued here is an edited excerpt from the larger interview, designed for use in the exhibition. Deirdre Farrell trained as a nurse at Caulfield Hospital in the 1960's. Her father Les Campbell was a First World War veteran, and Deirdre grew up on a soldier settlement farm. This interview explores her childhood, her relationship with her father, her experience of repatriation medicine and her memories of Caulfield Hospital. This oral history is significant as the firsthand testimony of the child of a First World War veteran and for its recollections of Caulfield Hospital in the 1960's.
