Photograph - Couta Boats under sail
A Couta boat is a type of sailing boat originally designed and built in Victoria, Australia, around Sorrento, Queenscliff and along Victoria's west coast as far west as Portland. It was originally used as a traditional fishing boat from around 1870 until the 1930s, although it survived as a commercial fishing vessel until the 1950s. From the 1970s onwards a community of enthusiasts started restoring old couta boats to use recreationally. The Couta Boat has been associated with the fishermen of Queenscliff from the first quarter of the 20th Century, and still is of significance due to the popularity of this boat as a leisure sailing vessel.2 Reproduced photographs of couta boat fishing fleet under full sail in Queenscliffcouta, couta boat, sailing, fishing, port phillip, queenscliff -

Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Manual - Handbook, Austin Lifeboat Engine, 1986
The website: austinmemories.com provides a list of extracts from the Austin Motor company archive and makes mention that in WW2 some 3,500 lifeboats were provided for ships. In the link above there is also reference to airborne lifeboats. It seems that the Austin 8HP so-called lifeboat motor was very often re-used by boating enthusiasts which would account for the publication or e-issue? of this manual in 1986. It seems likely that this temperamental engine was still of interest to people like ship's engineers.Mariner Duncan had a particular regard for the Mission to Seafarers. This plate for display on a commissioned new table at the MTSV chapel acknowledges his bequest and the material donated. Collectively the G W Duncan material includes: photographs, professional data memorabilia and written and commercially printed resources. The memorabilia relates to his career at sea and in particular the role of an engineer, including a handwritten manual of notes and references relating to the mechanical and engineering aspects and areas of responsibility for maintenance. Commercially printed well handled small handbook or manual with rounded corners; for an Austin 8 HP engine for a lifeboat.see image for front cover mariner manuals, lifeboats, manual, motors, austin, george winfield duncan (1922-2017), ship engineer, s.s. athenic -

Photograph, 1st Kew Scouts Fire Drill, 1911, 1911
A Volunteer Fire Brigade was established in Kew in 1879 and a fire station established in Walton Street, Kew. The Brigade was formally disbanded by the Fire Brigade Act of 1890 and the volunteers replaced by a unit of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in 1891. The building shown in this rare photograph was constructed in 1893. In the background can be seen a house on the corner of Walton and Peel Streets, one of two, built in 1893 for firemen of the Brigade. An article in The Weekly Times (1 April 1911) records that: "Kew Troop - A,S.M. Williams reports:- The troop under S.M. Kellett. marched to the Kew Fire Brigade station, to receive instruction in fire drill from Mr Gross, the officer in charge, but as he was unexpectedly called away, the S.M. S and A.S.M had to instruct the Troop. Every boy was taught how to sink the hydrant, and how to couple and uncouple the hose. The hose reel was then brought into action, and the boys were divided into sets of six, each division taking its turn in pulling the reel up a hill to the water plug, where the hydrant was quickly sunk by one Scout, two more uncoupling the hose and coupling it on to the hydrant. We have gained four recruits during the last week, and are expecting two more next week."This is a fine, original photograph, probably taken by a commercial photographer, showing the 1st Kew Scouts in front of the old Kew Fire Brigade building in Walton Street in 1911. The building, constructed in 1893 was later demolished in 1941. This is a rare historic photograph of the Station. Unfortunately the name of the photographer is unrecorded.1st Kew Scouts undertaking a fire drill in front of the old Kew Fire Station in Walton Street, Kew. The reverse details the names and addresses of the Scouts featured in the photograph. An integral part of the Scout program is service to others and working with the fire brigade would have been just one of many such training activities enthusiastically undertaken by the Scouts. The Kew Fire Brigade had hand-drawn fire appliances up until 1919 when a motorised vehicle was purchased. The fire station was replaced by the Belford Road station in 1941 and subsequently demolished. Medallion, Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, 1897
Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee was celebrated enthusiastically across the British Empire. Commemorative medallions were produced and distributed by the Victorian government and many local governments. Two medallions produced for this occasion by the Shire of Grenville are in the LDHS collection. One of these is believed to have been presented to schoolgirl Mabel Cluff, of Linton State School. The medallion which was presented to Mabel Cluff was donated to LDHS in 1995. Acquisition of this medallion is acknowledged in "Society Notes", Number 118, July 1995, but donor's name is not recorded. For reasons unknown these two medallions were not catalogued until 2016.Round, gilt bronze medallion, on the obverse two conjoined faces of Queen Victoria, one as a young girl, the other as an older woman.
