Melbourne Legacy
Photograph, Stanhope Committee 1964-65, 1964
Photo from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. The photo shows 9 legatees that were the Residences Committee for Stanhope. Written next to the photo are names Rear L to R: L/ Lahey, Danby, Savage. Front L to R: L/ Higgins (dec), Miriam?, Rosman, Evans (dec), Mason (dec), McRae. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook as she is referred to as 'self' in one photo. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01836. Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950) were residences run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. An example of a committee established by Legacy to monitor and administer the residence.Black and white photo of the Stanhope Committee in 1964-65.Handwritten caption in blue fountain pen of the Legatees' names.residences, stanhope -
Melbourne Legacy
Photograph, From Stanhope News, 1962
Photos from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. The photos shows three rooms of Stanhope, the study room and two bedrooms. They may be copies printed from slides (see 02520-02522). The photo of the study room is surrounded by the names: Denise Attewell, Susan Knowles, June S., Jill Baker, Colleen, Jacky and Sandra. One bedroom photo is captioned 'Packing for the holidays' and has the names: Lynn Hall, Jacky Mooney? and Jane Reed. The other photo has the names: June S, Glenyce Ring and Jennifer Biggs. A newspaper clipping at 01823 mentions the routine of the house including that the girls sleep in large airy bedrooms which they look after themselves. They generally do their own washing and ironing. There is a well equiped sewing room where they can make their own clothes. There is a radio and television and piano though between 7 and 9pm is quiet study time. A legacy member attended for dinner most evenings and the girls do their own washing up. They can cook in the kitchen if they wish. There is staff of an assistant matron, a cook and two housemaids. Girls have picnics and outings arranged and three or four times a year they have informal dances at Stanhope. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. An example of the interior of Stanhope residence and a glimpse into the life of the girls that lived there.Black and white photo x 3 of the interior rooms of Stanhope in 1962.Handwritten caption in blue fountain pen of the girls' names.residences, stanhope, study -

Photo, 'Spenceycroft', Canterbury Road
The photo is of ‘Spenceycroft’ at 654 Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills. For many years this home was hidden behind a large fence sheltering it from the noise of traffic along Canterbury Road, however it dates back to the very early days of settlement in the Surrey Hills area. Canterbury Road was then known as Delany’s Road. ‘Spenceycroft’ is thought to incorporate part of the original farmhouse built on the site by George Klepper, who planted a vineyard in the area. George’s family was one of a number of German families who settled in Surrey Hills during the later part of the 19th century. Later, the land associated with ‘Spenceycroft’ was worked as a dairy farm by James and Elizabeth Rayment. In recent years 'Spenceycroft' has been sold several times and has become increasingly derelict. Sold again in 2015 when it had become quite derelict, it was demolished and re-developed.A black & white photo of double-fronted Victorian style home with a fountain centre front and low foliage in front of the veranda. Slide - Queen Victoria Jubilee Fountain, Alexandra Gardens, 1979
One of a group of slides taken by members of the Society of built heritage in Kew in 1979-80. The selection of subject matter reflects the priorities of the period. The colour of some slides has degraded. The slides represent a snapshot in time of built architecture in Kew, much of which has changed in the forty-plus period since they were created.Colour positive transparency (slide) of the Queen Victoria Jubilee Fountain in the Alexandra Gardens, Cotham Road. The fountain was previously sited in front of the Kew Post Office but was relocated to the gardens in the 1920s when the Kew War Memorial was being constructed. The latter required the resting of the fountain. alexandra gardens -- kew (vic.), queen victoria jubilee fountain, queen victoria jubilee, monuments -- kew (vic.) -

Ink Well Desk Set, circa mid to late 1900's
The "nib" pen was the preferred scribe method up until the "fountain" pen was produced (1940's), both could use specific inks that had longer life periods on paper surfaces. Ink wells such as those incorporated in this desk set allowed the user to select the colour and "type of ink" required. The nib pen was the only writing pen that could tolerate "Iron gall" ink. Legal documents were at the start of the mid 1980's required by law(in Australia) to be signed by "well" filled pens. The inks used were either "indian" or "iron/oak gall" because their infusion into paper could not be erased and they had a longer "paper" life and were harder to forge. Bottled ink was superior to that supplied in fountain pens or "biro pens" because the user's choice to a greater range of inks covered a variety of scenarios. Forging a nib signature is extremely hard compared to that of a "biro pen" because a nib settles in to the users particular style of pen movement and arm pressure. This desk writing set was typical of those used by administrators, businesses or quasi legal sectors within the Kiewa Valley, before the lifting of the ban on the use of biros "to sign" legal documents. Fountain pens were used extensively before cheaper biros (throw away) writing implements (1940's) came into the market place. This glass ink well desk set has two circular ink wells connected to their respective nib holders. The nib holders are smaller circular receptacles and feed off the larger ink reservoirs. Between the two larger ink wells is a shallow bottomed elongated "oval" sphere able to contain "slide on" clips, two pronged fasteners (require a hole to be punched in papers) or small "bulldog" clips. At the front edge is an elongated and grooved (two) place for writing nibs. The grooves keep each nib or fountain pen separated. The glass structure is made from clear glass and only the outside "boxed" walls of the desk set make contact with the desk surface. The ink wells can also securely accommodate small bottles of ink. This would have been the case for refillable fountain pens.stationery, fountain pens, nib pens, ink receptors, glass ink wells
