This navy officer’s hat has been reconditioned and this alteration may have been done for theatrical purposes. No information is available on its original owner or his country or rank.This hat is of minor interest as it is no longer in its original condition and has no known local provenance. This is a Navy officer’s hat with a white cloth circular top and a black material base and a band lined with black material. It has a Bakelite peak. The black band has an off-centre cloth badge of metallic thread featuring decorative feathers and a flag with a blue and red six-pointed star. The hat appears to be a re-conditioning of an original hat and the badge is probably not an original one. The edges of the hat are frayed and soiled. History has it that the origins of the Slouch Hat began with the Victorian Mounted Rifles; a hat of similar design had been worn in South Africa by the Cape Mounted Rifles for many years before 1885. The design of the Victorian Mounted Rifle hat originated from headgear of native police in Burma where Lieutenant-Colonel Tom Price had recognised its value. The Victorian hat was an ordinary bush felt hat turned up on the right side. The intention of turning up the right side of the hat was to ensure it would not be caught during the drill movement of “shoulder arms” from “order arms”. The Slouch Hat became standard issue headdress in 1903 and its brim position was mostly standardised. The slouch hat became a famous symbol of the Australian fighting man during World War One and continued to be worn throughout World War Two. This is an army officer’s hat from the Australian Army. It dates back to the 1940s before the word ‘Commonwealth’ was deleted in 1949 from the name of the military forces. The Australian Army has used the rising sun emblem in its official insignia since the early 1900s. The owner of this hat is not known. This hat has no known local provenance but is retained for display purposes.This is a khaki hat with an oval padded crown and a rounded peak. The top has four metal eyeleted air holes. The badge on the hat has the Rising Sun emblem. There is a brown leather strap round the brim attached by metal buttons. The inside of the hat has a blue cloth lining with a square of cellophane. Marion “Annie” (Cooper) Harrison, a milliner by trade, designed and made women’s hats, initially in the 1940s in High Street, and later in the 1950s and 60s at 5 Princess Street. The hats were constructed upstairs in her shop in Princes Street while the ground floor was reserved for sales and display. She employed other milliners to assist but always ran the showroom herself. Hectic periods were in the weeks before the big racing carnivals when the many wealthy race-goers of Kew kept her busy. She typically walked to her business as she and her husband, Fred Harrison, lived locally. Annie died in April 2016, at the great age of 107 years. Her hats are held in local and national collections. This hat was worn by Kathleen Gervasoni, long term resident and former Mayoress of Kew, who purchased it from Anne Harrison.The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. While most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women, there are a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. This hat is one commonly called a fez but there are many variations of the style and colour and many different names according to the country or group wearing this type of hat. The name fez comes from the city of Fez, the capital of Morocco up to 1927. This style of hat was part of the traditional clothing of Cyprus and introduced into the Balkan countries in the Byzantine era. In the early 1800s it was made part of men’s clothing by the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and was used particularly as part of the military uniform. Today in military circles it is used as part of a dress uniform only but is extensively worn by men in many countries and is now seen to be part of oriental cultural identity. This particular fez appears to be a theatrical prop.This hat is not an authentic one, being a theatrical piece, but it will be useful for display.This is a short cylindrical peakless hat made of cardboard covered with a burgundy-coloured felt. History of the seven versions of the Rising Sun hat badge.Two sided hinged timber look box set containing replicas of the seven versions of the Australian Military Forces (Army) Rising Sun hat badge from 1902 to the current version from 1991. The badges are mounted on a foam and black cloth background. The Rising Sun badges are able to be removed from the cloth background. Printed in black ink on the inside cover of the box is a history guide to the badges from 1902 to the current deisign. An early version of the Rising Sun badge containing bayonet and swords mounted over a crown with a rising sun background is also printed on the inside cover. Mounted on the outside of the front of the box is a gold coloured larger version of the current version of the Rising Sun badge.
