During this time, the Boyds purchased this set of melamine kitchen canisters. Wooden tree measuring calipers (inches)
Foresters usually measure the diameter of trees at Breast Height – traditionally 4 foot, 6 inches – now 1.3 m – which is termed Diameter Breast Height Over Bark (DBHOB). The most common way to measure tree diameter is to place a calibrated tape around the stem at breast height. It’s simple, but can be slow, particularly if the scrub is thick, or if there are heaps of trees. A tree caliper is another quick method of estimating DBHOB. Wooden tree measuring calipersMeasurements are in inches (pre metrication in 1974) A crown faint crown mark (331) and crows foot is visible on one end forest measurement -

Footwear - Rubber Boot, 1900-1908
The Falls of Halladale was an iron-hulled, four-masted barque, used as a bulk carrier of general cargo. She left New York in August 1908 bound for Melbourne and Sydney. In her hold was general cargo consisting of roof tiles, barbed wire, stoves, oil, and benzene as well as many other manufactured items. After three months at sea and close to her destination, a navigational error caused the Falls of Halladale to be wrecked on a reef off the Peterborough headland on the 15th of November, 1908. The captain and 29 crew members survived, but her cargo was largely lost, despite two salvage attempts in 1908-09 and 1910. The Court of Marine Inquiry in Melbourne ruled that the foundering of the ship was entirely due to Captain David Wood Thomson's navigational error, not too technical failure of the Clyde-built ship. The Falls of Halladale was built in1886 by Russell & Co., at Greenock shipyards on the River Clyde, Scotland for Wright, Breakenridge & Co of Glasgow. She was one of several designs of the Falls Line of ships named after waterfalls in Scotland. The company had been founded between 1870- 1873 as a partnership between Joseph Russell, Anderson Rodger, and William Todd Lithgow. During the period 1882-92 Russell & Co. standardised designs, which sped up their building process so much that they were able to build 271 ships during that time. The Falls of Halladale had a sturdy construction built to carry maximum cargo and was able to maintain full sail in heavy gales, one of the last of the 'windjammers' that sailed the Trade Route. She and her sister ship, the Falls of Garry, were the first ships in the world to include fore and aft lifting bridges. Previous to this, heavily loaded vessels could have heavy seas break along the full length of the deck, causing serious injury or even death to those on deck. The new raised catwalk-type decking allowed the crew to move above the deck in stormy conditions. This rubber boot is significant for being the only rubber boot in our collection. It is remarkable that it has survived almost seventy years underwater. The Falls of Halladale shipwreck is listed on the Victorian Heritage (No. S255). She was one of the last ships to sail the Trade Routes from Europe and the Americas. Also of significance is that the vessel was one of the first ships to have fore and aft lifting bridges as a significant safety feature still in use on modern vessels today. The subject model is an example of an International Cargo Ship used during the 19th and early 20th centuries to transport goods around the world and represents aspects of Victoria’s shipping industry. Rubber boot, left foot, Boot is ankle height and adult size. The heel appears to be solid rubber and the inner sole resembles leather. The rubber has come away from the outer boot in places, revealing a fabric base. Recovered from the Falls of Halladale. flagstaff hill, warrnambool, flagstaff hill maritime museum and village, shipwreck coast, great ocean road, russell & co., rubber boot, protective footwear, shipwreck artefact -

Sniper shield, c. 1910s
This sniper shield may have been used by German troops during the First World War. There are few other examples of sniper shields of this shape or style, so it was possibly not a widely used design.Metal sniper shield constructed of a large flat front with curved edges, onto which a handle-like piece is soldered on one end and bolted on another. This handle has a pin which presumably adjusts the height/angle of the shield in relation to the ground. The third piece of the shield is a stand with a curved end, presumably rests on the ground, and on the other end a series of five holes which adjust the height/angle. The shield itself is roughly square in shape with a rectangular cut out off-centre at the top and a larger rectangular cut out at the base, which forms two pointed ends, possibly for securing into earth like a peg."G-01" is inscribed in ink, a registration number rather than historic inscription.germany, first world war, world war i, world war 1, the great war, sniper, firearm -

Hand Operated drill
From January 1959 and until 1982, “Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures”, owned by Mr Peter Yannoudes (Παναγιώτης Γιαννούδης) and Mr Stathis Raftopoulos (Στάθης Ραφτόπουλος) travelled around Australia to entertain the Greek, Turkish, Indian and Yugoslav speaking population of Australia and provide a significant cinema culture. They travelled as far as Perth in WA, Adelaide in SA, Tasmania, Darwin in Nt, Canberra in ACT and Sydney and NSW. However they found themselves also in places like Berri and Renmark in NSW, where concentrations of migrants lived and thrived during the period. Initially they were travelling by train, carrying all their equipment by hand and placing them in boxes and suitcases. However after 1962 when they acquired their first automobile, travelling became less of a burden, nevertheless cumbersome and laborious. They carried with them initially two portable projectors (second one as a backup) and at times travelled with a third in order to ensure that technology will not be letting them down at the time of film projection. At times the films were projected onto a white sheet of cloth because there was no proper screen to project it on at the venue they were using.Primary historic significance in the context that it was used, as well as rarity significanceMetal adjustable height, hand operated drill. Rusty appearance. It seems to have a small piece at the bottom broken off, but still in working order according to Mr P. Yiannoudes. This drill was used to drill holes in cinema light carbon sticks in order to extend their life.drill, carbon, film, entertainment, greek, language, hand, yiannoudes, γιαννούδης, τρυπάνι -

Ledger - Kiewa Valley Rifle Club
The Kiewa Valley Rifle Club belonged to the Australian Rifle Clubs. They were in Military district No. 304 and operated as early as the 1920s. In 1876 an Australian Rifle Team, consisting of shooters from N.S.W. and Victoria, was the first team ever to officially represent Australia in any sport in international competition. In 1885 the first civilian Rifle Club was formed and after 1901 Rifle Clubs came under army control. In 1921, they were reconstituted as a purely civilian organisation where they have remained ever since. This ledger is evidence that the Kiewa Valley Rifle Club existed in the 1920's and 1930's, enabling its members to participate in a sport that had 12232 members and 313 Rifle Clubs in Victoria by 1939.Large yellowed alphabetical ledger covering the 1920's and 1930's with names, age, height, occupation and date of enrolment.
