Newspaper Clipping (p7) from "Catholic", No. 178, November 1998, contains the story written by Mother May Oliver, Imp. James O'Collins RC Bishop of Ballarat, January 1945, chapter 7 of "All for All", relating to the life of the 'the young girl countess Elizabeth Wolff-Metterich of Germany. The story revolves around her visit to Melbourne and Ballarat - in particular the visit to Lorretto - sighting of 'a tram (streetcar) bearing 'convent' as its head sign'. The reference to arrival by tram in the article suggests by the author that the Countess arrived by electric tram (by the use of the word 'streetcar'. In actual fact, date of visit was 1898, so it would have be the horse tram. Copy of a letter and associated documents written to the Town Clerk, City of Ballaarat, dated Aug 1, 1985 seeking the support of the Council in attaining the body of the tramcar in Ballarat East. (Tram was actually obtained in December). Signed by the Secretary, Richard Gilbert. Mentions Frank Hanrahan as President for further information. Enclosed within letter is a two page note on BTPS Letter head outlining the history of the tramcar, its restoration, current condition, possible operation and value of the restoration. Attached as well is a folded drawing out an Adelaide double deck horse tram (Reference Reg. Item No. 706.1 ) and a photocopy of the builders of the first horse tram at the depot in 1887 (Reference Reg. Item No. 765 ). Printed colour postcard of a horse tram travelling on the north side of Sturt St towards Lydiard St. Tram is travelling on the "right side of the road", which is unusual, horse trams normally travelled in bound on the south side or the "wrong side". Close examination shows three (3) horses on the tram, the middle appearing to be fairly small. In the back ground are the buildings on the south side of Sturt St include Harry Davies & Co. store, Stansfield & Smith Paper Warehouse. On rear is places for correspondences stamp, address. Handwritten on rear is "This will give you a fair idea of the beautiful Sturt St Ballarat. It is the prettiest I have seen. Yours " Dated 19/10/1905. Noted the tram has been restored in the colours of the Royal Park (Zoo) line.
