Old Tom mine included quartz mining and open cut mining. Today the remains of the battery site, cyanide plant, hydrolic sluicing and a 1930's puddler can be seen. It was operating in August 1874 and was taken over in 1897 by an English syndicate, J. R. Syndicate. By 1899 the mine had reached 500 feet in depth . Fehmarn is an island in Germany on the Baltic coast. It was formerly part of Denmark. One of the Fehmarn residents that came to Bendigo was Jurgen La Frenz (1836-1915). He came to Australia in 1855 and after some time on other goldfields, he arrived in Bendigo in 1860. He initially sought his fortune by puddling before moving on to quartz mining. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Lucrative: the extended Hustlers Company's quartz mining claim, featuring the office, battery house and main shaft in 1875. The claim had six shafts with 144,500 tonnes of quartz mined, yielding 188,000 ounces of gold. The shaft included 4,000 feet of sinking and 16 crosscuts, giving a total of 12,000 feet in length. The goldfields resulted in the almost complete denuding of trees for access to the gold bearing land, for firewood and for the tanning industry. The need for wood further increased with the advent of deep quartz mining that required timbers for shoring up the shafts and tunnels. At some point in time it became necessary for timber to be carted long distances to fulfil the need. Wootton Lansell was a sailor born in Kent, England in 1825. after travelling to Nova Scotia and the Californian goldfields, Wootton arrived in Australia in 1850. For 18 months he worked as a mounted trooper in Adelaide before coming to Bendigo in 1850. He also spent time on the Ovens goldfields before returning to Adelaide for three months. He returned to Bendigo in 1854 and had some success in his hunt for gold before working as a carpenter. In 1854 he married Helen Hall He invited his brothers, George and William to join him in Bendigo and they initially set up a butchery, soap and candlemakers business in View point. George went on to become the "King of Quartz Mining'. Wootton eventually became a farmer at Leichardt, where he built "Myrtle Villa", but retained his interest in mining becoming a director of many mining and dredging companies. Copy of an article from the Bendigo Weekly 30/12/1999 Discover Bendigo by James Lerk titled John Emery and His Associates. John Emery was a tailor who had a business in Raywood. He moved to Bendigo where he set up his business as a tailor, draper and clothing mercer at the corner of Pall Mall and Mitchell Street. The shop was close to the Beehive Exchange, where he invested in the quartz mining companies. He took on a partner, T S Gibson, who was a clothier. Emery was involved in the Bendigo Bowling Club and St Paul's Church. Later he travelled and became a collector of curios. He donated sculptures to the Bendigo Art Gallery and loaned a number of paintings. Typed copy of recount by Albert Richardson of a fire at Unity Mine on Tuesday 8-10-1907. Report from the Bendigo Advertiser Wednesday October 9th 1907. Notes mention Fire Brigade, miners, how the fire started and how the men down the shaft escaped when the rope crash down the shaft. On the back is a handwritten carbon copy of notes titled Famous Gold Mines of Bendigo and Eaglehawk. Notes give yields of gold for alluvial and quartz mining. Deep Shafts in 1904 of which there were eleven with a depth of more than 3000 feet and 53 over 2000 feet and two which were more than 4000 feet. The first company to make a success of hard-rock (quartz) gold mining at Black Hill was the Black Hill Company, formed in 1859. Mining from the open-cut mine probably commenced in 1860 and by 1861 the company had erected the largest stamping mill in Victoria. The mill ran 24 hours a day until the end of 1864 and 12 hours a day in 1865. Open cut mining then ceased. Reply from BHS - extract from 'Bendigo and Vicinity' re a Frederick Clark (''not the one you are researching''. In Bendigo and vicinity a Frederick Clark is written as born in Warwickshire in October 1834, left England after being taught the building trade, in 1856, and assisted in erection of old university buuildings in Carlton. Arrived in Bendigo in 1857, became interested in building batteries for quartz mining, travelling throughout Victoria and New Zealand with mining interests. Frederick entered the Eaglehawk council in 1870. Twice married his eldest son George was in the Education Department, His stepson Richard Hamilton - mining manager in Arizona U.S.A. The book Bendigo and Vicinity was printed in 1895, and this man is the only Clark mentioned.cottage, miners

There is no information with this item. John Tynan's Victoria Agricultural Implement Factory began making ploughs in 1857. His company is also believed to be the first to have produced drilling tools suitable for use in basalt quartz-load gold mining. Tynan was the first person to manufacture swing ploughs.
