The Billiard Room and South wing were completed in 1914, built by recommendation of the Lesee John Newton and the Government Tourist Officer and Supervising officer of the Government Chalet, James Boyce... "Boyce was present at the Chalet on 14 March to witness the completion of the new wing's foundations ...when he returned in June he found the wing approaching completion and that '... the billiard table was expected to reach the Chalet during the week'. The table possibly came second-hand from the Oriental Hotel, Bright. When visiting in March, Boyce had heard from a Mr Tewksbury 'that he is disposing of those at the Oriental Hotel so that if the Public Works Department is going to provide the table for the Chalet it might be possible to pick one up cheap from the Hotel'. It's reasonable that the Chalet did acquire one of the second-hand tables in 1914 and, and changed over to a new model in the 1930s. Three billiard tables remain in the Chalet Billiard Room today; one full sized table and two smaller tables, one perhaps a pool table. The full-sized table was made by the well-known billiard table manufacturers Alcock, Thomson & Taylor, who adopted this name when they merged their billiard businesses in January 1930. Henry Upton Alcock had initially established the business in Fitzroy in the mid-1850's and the table at the Chalet resembles the 'Squatter's Favourite' model that Alcock first produced in the nineteenth century from Australian timbers. this style of table was installed in Melbourne's Parliament buildings, several prestigious clubs as well as hotels and houses."(Pg 13-14. Believed to be a simple alpahbetical register of births kept by Marianne Thomson, Ringwood Postmistress and local registrar. Foolscap sized notebook with handwritten index to Births A-Z by surname. Each entry is simply the surname, christian names and Ringwood District Birth Registration Number. Believed to have been entered by Marianne Thomson, Postmistress and local Registrar. The actual Register images and searchable pdf of the registers are found in VC records 50001, 50002 and 50003 This handwritten notebook is kept only because it appears to hae been written by Marianne Thomson. This certificate was presented to Donald David Thomson , sleeper hewer, aged 42 years for rescuing S.C. Curtis, aged 52, G. Wylie, aged 54, J. Dalgleish, aged 5 from flood waters at White gulch on the Snowy River on January 8, 1934. (The certificate reads as White's Gulch but should be Watt's gulch.) Although damage estimated at 500,000 pounds was caused by the unprecedented floods along the Snowy River, no lives were lost because of the courageous actions of men like Donald Thomson.A framed copy of a printed and hand-written certificate from the Royal Humane Society of Australia awarded to Donald David Thomson for rescuing victims of the floodwaters in Orbost January 1934. Although the first recorded burial at Whroo (7 km south of Rushworth) was in 1858, it is believed earlier unrecorded burial took place. The official cemetery was established in 1860 and contains approx. 400 burials although many are unmarked. These four items are annual letters of appreciation to Helen Thomson who was employed by George Swinton and Sons in the 1940s and 1950s. She received a monetary bonus each year. The Swinton business in Warrnambool was founded by William and Ann Swinton in Timor Street in 1865. In 1934 the firm of George Swinton and Sons was selling furniture, clothing and glass ware and the other branch of Swintons Pty.Ltd. sold seeds, produce and hard ware. Today the Swinton family still operate the furniture store in Timor Street. . These letters are of of minor interest as a memento of a prominent store in Warrnambool. They reflect the kindly attitude between emploer and employee.These are four letters from Keith Swinton of George Swinton and Sons Pty. Ltd. to staff member Helen Thomson. The letters date from 1949 to 1955.Three letters are typed and one is hand written. Stratherne Presbyterian Girls' School was founded in 1889 at the home of Miss Ethel Dare at 45 Riversdale road, Hawthorn. The final location of the school was 131 Power street, Hawthorn - a house gifted to the school by Mr and Mrs John Patterson in 1923. These labels were used in the business of E.B.Phillips, firstly when he as in partnership with Thomson in the late 1890s and later when he was the sole proprietor. Ernest Brighton Phillips (1875-1924) was a furniture maker and seller with a business at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets. At the beginning of the 20th century it was the largest furniture warehouse and factory in Victoria outside of Melbourne. Samples of his furniture making are still in use in various parts of Australia. Philips built his home, ‘Heatherlie’, diagonally opposite his business and this site today is occupied by ‘Heatherlie’ flats for the elderly.These labels are of interest as mementoes of the Warrnambool furniture shop and factory of E.B.Phillips, a prominent businessman in Warrnambool a hundred or more years ago. .1 A sheet of cream-coloured paper with cream printing on an orange background and a space for an address. The sheet has two ragged edges. .2 A circular label or sticker pasted on to an irregular-shaped sheet of brown paper (part of the original wrapping). The label has an image in brown and white tonings of a woman with an easel, some stylized decoration and blue and white printing.
