This ledger comes from the Model Bakery business of G.W. Greaves, a baker and pastrycook In Allansford in the first half of the 20th century. Allansford is a township 10 kilometres east of Warrnambool, now incorporated into the City of Warrnambool. The ledger contains details of the Greaves business sales of goods, mostly bread, from 1946 to 1948 and includes the names of the customers, the orders and the moneys owing. The bakery served many nearby areas including Wangoom, Hopkins Point, Cudgee, Mepunga, Naringal and Lake Glllear. This ledger is of interest as it illustrates the size of the Allansford bakery and contains many names of people in the area in the 1940s, making it a valuable research object.This is a ledger with a black cover and leather coverings at the corners and a brown leather spine. The red label on the spine has gold lettering and ornamental edges. The inside of the cover has a red mottled pattern and has tape and string stitching. A maker's label is also inside the front cover. The pages are ruled with red lines and contain handwritten entries. There are some loose invoices. This camera is a folding one, the Ensignette No 2 model made by the British firm of Houghtons Ltd which was originally a glass warehouse founded in 1834. The firm of George Houghton and Sons, dating from the late 19th century, established their camera business at Ensign House in London in 1903 and the Ensignette No 2, designed by a Swedish engineer, was introduced in 1912. Eastman Kodak of America produced a film for this model. This camera was a popular one with amateur photographers and the general public, being affordable, compact and easy to use. This camera is retained as an example of a British-made folding camera dating from nearly 100 years ago. It will be useful for display..1 This is a black metal camera which is rectangular in shape. It is a strut folding rollfilm camera with a lens that is folded inside in a thin leather concertina or bellows covering. It has the maker’s name and logo etched into the front of the camera. The logo is a flag with the British Union Jack in one corner and the word ‘Ensign’ inside the flag. The metal on the back of the camera is rusted. .2 This is a brown leather cover for the folding camera described above. It has a top lid flap which closes with a metal stud and a leather handle stitched on to the sides of the case. The cover is much worn and scuffed. "Acquistions curently held by the Andrew Ross Schoolhouse museum Kangaroo Ground on behalf of the the Shire of Eltham Historical Society at at 15th November 1994". Includes lists of a wide range of item dated July 1987 with names of donors. Also includes item added to folder in 2019 - a handwritten list of items "held at Sweeney's" for Shillinglaw Cottage dated 2.5.1969. EDHS did not have the capacity to display artefacts although there was efforts made for Shillingalw Cottage to be a community museum when it was re-located. Artefacts were stored by EDHS members. George Houghton established his camera business in London in the 19th Century and sold cameras all over the world.This camera would have been used by a professional photographer in the early 20th Century. It was British made and used extensively in Australia. This camera has no known local provenance but is retained as an interesting example of early photography in 20th Century Australia.This is a folding camera for professional use. It has a concertina mechanism that folds back into a leather case. The lens board can be tilted and the lenses can be changed. The case has a leather handle. Andrew Chatham, the youngest of Philip and Elizabeth Chatham's 5 children, was born in 1968. In this photo, he looks about 8 - 10 years old. The photo was taken at Rokewood, Victoria on his parent's Western District property, "Kur-a-ruc South" a former part of the Kur-a ruc Station, Rokewood, Victoria purchased by Philip and Elizabeth Chatham in 1964. The family lived at Ascot, 15 miles north of Ballarat, and had regular weekend day trips and Easter holidays picnicking, droving sheep, feeding stock, checking water troughs and dams, hand-weeding Patterson curse, repairing fences, collecting paddock rocks and sugar-gum wood at "Kur-a-ruc South'. Home base for these excursions was either a car, the shearing shed, sometimes a 6-berth caravan and by the mid-1980s a shearer's quarters with an inside toilet. EDHS Newsletter No. 271 August 2023 Public Record Office Victoria (PROV) is the Archive of the State Government of Victoria. Established fifty years ago under the Public Records Act 1973, PROV at the Victorian Archives Centre in North Melbourne now holds around 106 kilometres of public records from 1836 to the present day. There are also PROV collections at Ballarat, Beechworth, Bendigo, Geelong and the University of Melbourne. Our next meeting will be about PROV and former PROV staff member Andrew Lemon, will briefly reminisce about his work there, in it’s early days. As Assistant Director Access Services at PROV, David Taylor oversees the management of, and access to, the State collection. David will be outlining PROV’s unique role in Victoria, the nature of the public records it holds and how researchers can use increasingly sophisticated online resources to discover more about their ancestors and Victorian history. Andrew Wauchope initially trained as a naval cadet. After three years he obtained his discharge and resolved to enter the army. In 1881 he served on the staff in the Transvaal War. In 1885 he returned to Scotland to manage his family estates which he had recently inherited. The coal mines were highly productive and as a result he became one of the richest men in Scotland. He was promoted to Colonel in 1888 and given command of the 2nd Battalion of the Black Watch in 1894. Promotion to Major-General occurred in 1898. He was appointed to command the 3rd (Highland) Brigade in the South Africa War, which saw action at Belmont and Modder River as part of the force sent to relieve Kimberley. Pushing further, they again encountered the Boer force at Magersfontein. In the resulting Battle of Magersfontein, the Highland Brigade was ordered to make a dawn attack on the Boer defences. However, the force was spotted before it was prepared to attack and faulty reconnaissance meant that the enemy positions were not properly located. Under heavy fire it struggled to deploy action. Wauchope was killed by rifle fire in the opening minutes of combat. It held its position for a short time after Wauchope's death. It was leaderless and no-one would take command until late afternoon and despite the Guards Brigade being in support, in the early afternoon it was routed.
