This is No.1 the first Newsletter produced by CMHS members in August 1961. Topics : October 1960 Mayor Cr. D.H. Clark called a meeting in the Moorabbin Town Hall to form the City of Moorabbin Historical Society. Local residents attended including descendants of early settler families - Coates, LePage, Shipston - and a Committee was elected. Mr T.A.Sheehy, President, Mr R.Colbourne, Secretary, Mrs F.Wright, Treasurer set the Annual Membership Fee at 5/- ( shillings), arranged the next meetings at the Moorabbin Town Hall and began to compile a Newsletter to tell the ' story of Moorabbin'. The Cheltenham & District Society Co-operative Limited (est.1896) sponsored this 1st CMHS Newsletter published August 1961. The Aims of the CMHS are ‘to record the history of the City, and register something of the Australian Atmosphere, which the necessary speed-up in post-world-war two (WW11) immigration has caused to be lost; to produce a magazine at regular intervals, featuring the work of pioneers and the changing Australian scene; to work constantly with a long range view towards building a hall where records and exhibits can be housed’ The Original Newsletters reflect the history and heritage of the former City of Moorabbin — derived from Mooroobin, ‘a resting place’ in the Bunurrung spoken language. In 1994, the City of Moorabbin was integrated into the Cities of Bayside, Glen Eira, Kingston and Monash. The first article describes the opinion of the British conductor Sir Malcolm Sargent to his visit to the Sydney Opera House. The second article, by Tony Pratt, discusses a possible boycott of Australian architects in competitions to be decided at the annual meeting of the International Union of Architects' International Contents Committee. Robin Boyd’s desk cupboard contained two exercise books (item D482.1-D482.2) and assorted articles, essays and other material regarding the building of the Sydney Opera House, inserted inside the front cover of Walkabout magazine, July 1966 (item P1377). This publication is one of those inserts. Photocopy of an article in the State Electricity Commission of Victoria Magazine, Contact, Vol 1, No. 4, Feb 1937 titled "Electricity Supply for Buninyong" and "Ballarat Trams in Picturesque Setting". Each item had a thin strip of paper attached by staple to the top left hand corner, giving the Vol. No. details. The first story features the provision of power to the town of Buninyong on 14/1/2937. The supply was provided by a 6.6kV line running from Sebastopol. The second story with a photo of a line up of 7 trams in the Gardens following the annual outing of the Pleasant Street State School trip to the Botanical Gardens and special trams in general. This Scrapbook contains, among other things, newspapers clippings and annual reports relating to the Adult Deaf Missions of Victoria and South Australia as well as clippings from various Deaf magazines printed in Great Britian. The compiler of the scrapbook is unknown, however it is possibly the work of E. B. Solomon a deaf man associated with the South Australian Adult Deaf and Dumb Mission as Caretaker (1896) and Collector (1897-1919?). If it is the work of Solomon it is not known how it came to be in the Vicdeaf Collection and research is continuing.This Scrapbook is a significant collection of material relating to the Deaf Missions of Victoria and South Australia with the period cover being from about 1895 to 1905. Marjorie Morgan noticed a beautiful wood carving of gumleaves and gumnuts by John Blogg. The carving, donated by a Box Hill resident, is in the impressive art collection of the City of Whitehorse. The more Marjorie researched the more she felt his achievements should not be permitted to disappear into the mists of time.
