SISTER Gwen, of the Methodist Home Missions Department, visited Tallygaroopna West last Wednesday, and gave a most interesting illustrated talk. As well as showing some of the scenic beauties of Gippsland, the talk and lantern slides dealt with slum conditions in South Melbourne, and showed the Methodist home at Cheltenham. The Reverend Doug Dargaville, Anglican clergyman and former General Secretary of the Victorian Council of Churches from 1966 – 1982, and again for a time in 1995, passed away on 19 March 2013. "The death of Rev. Doug Dargaville at Bacchus Marsh in Victoria, Australia has been announced, and his funeral is to take place on March 28th. Doug was one of the great pioneers of the ecumenical and interfaith movements, especially in his role as executive secretary of the Victorian Council of Churches from 1966 to 1982. Perhaps more than anyone else, he laid the foundations for the organizational structure of the ecumenical movement here in Victoria and across Australia. A small man with a big vision, he brought his inclusive Anglican spirituality to the tasks at hand. With his retirement to the country town of Bacchus Marsh outside Melbourne with his beloved Lucy, his life’s work was not yet complete. He devoted three years of his life during the 2000s to being the general secretary of Religions for Peace Australia, and was always a strong supporter of the interfaith movement, not least during the Parliament of the World’s Religions, held in Melbourne in December, 2009. He was an efficient and prudent administrator, never seeking the limelight yet everything was done with an ironic and disarming humor and a certain impish and whole-hearted spirit. He was, in every sense of the word, a good man whose life was completely devoted to overcoming barriers and forging unity between the different churches and different faith traditions. We pray that he will find rest and eternal peace with the God whom he served so well and so faithfully for so long." Rosalie Rayment originally trained and worked as an Occupational Therapist. Following completion of studies in Theology she worked for 11 years with the Church in Thailand. Rosalie was ordained in 1988. Fred Vanclay B.D., Dip AgS. ordained 1964 in the Presbyterian Church. Served: Queensland 1961 - 1975; Victoria 1976 - 1985 Vermont - Parkmore; Northern Territory Tennant-Barkly Patrol 1985 - 1993. Died in 2016. Adapted from the eulogy given by his son, Jerry Vanclay One of Fred’s first placements as a minister was in Mackay, North Queensland. Mackay was a wonderful place for Fred, his wife Donna and their young family. They all loved the beaches and the bush, and the children completed a significant part of their schooling there. Whilst posted in Mackay, Fred and Donna enjoyed long road trips in their modest HR Holden sedan, with the family, to Uluru, to Broome via the Borroloola Track, and down the Birdsville Track to the Flinders ranges; along the way, developing the bushcraft that would stand them in good stead later in the Tennant-Barkly Patrol. After many years in ministry in Mackay, then in Vermont, Victoria, Fred and Donna were called to the Tennant-Barkly Patrol in the Northern Territory, where he served for eight years, probably Fred’s most satisfying years. All Fred’s parishes were welcoming and rewarding, but Fred said on more than one occasion that he had a special love for the Patrol. He felt that in an urban congregation, he ministered mainly to those who came to Church, but in the Patrol he ministered to everyone, and especially to those in need. Fred loved to get involved with the day-to-day activities of his people, to develop a deeper relationship and greater understanding. Some remarked that when Fred helped, everything took longer, but they loved him and his assistance nonetheless. Fred was proud to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor Padre Fred McKay, and sometimes joked that he was “Fred the 2nd”, not Fred McKay, but “Fred from Mackay”. During his last few weeks in hospital, Fred liked to reminisce on his time in the Patrol. He joked about how he surprised the selection panel with his knowledge of bush tracks and outstations – knowledge that he had gained on those long road trips from Mackay. He reflected that many aspects of his life were good preparation for his time in the Patrol. After their Patrol, Fred and Donna retired to Mt Waverley, in Melbourne, but they were both restless in retirement, and undertook supply ministries in Wedderburn, Kerang and North Cairns, and made several long journeys into the interior and into their beloved Patrol [in Tennant Creek] – as well as frequent visits to their eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and occasional trips to Europe to reunite with distant family. They never tired of ministering and adventuring, but as age and infirmity progressively clipped their wings, they travelled more in spirit and less by car. Despite the many celebrations that he blessed – baptisms, marriages, and funerals – Fred never sought the limelight, and I think he would be surprised by our gathering today. Reverend Alfred Madsen was a Methodist minister who was born in Maryborough in 1864 and died in 1930. He served in Ballarat and President and Secretary of the Primitive Methodist Conference before Union as well as Secretary of the United Methodist Church in 1916, and President of the Conference in 1917. Mr Donald "Dosh" McLennan was a well-known Highland piper in the Colac district. He was honorary piper of the Geelong Commun na Feinne and the Colac and Camperdown Caledonian societies. He was born in Balmacara, Rosshire, and arrived in Victoria in 1852. Local resident Deborah Halpern is a highly recognised and respected contemporary artist with an acclaimed national and international reputation in the arts community. She has a strong artistic connection to the area as her parents were founding members of Potters Cottage - a group of local ceramicists who were influential in the development of ceramics in Australia. Deborah Halpern donated Wayfarer through the Australian Government Cultural Gift Program. A cubist inspired kinetic work in three parts, the artwork depicts a semi abstract figure, a ‘traveller’ made out of reflective mirror and colourful ceramic tiles. Wayfarer is an excellent example of Halpern’s tile construction technique and playful style that she is renowned for. Wayfarer is one of Halpern’s first works exploring kinetics as well as combining mirror with painted ceramic tiles. David Armfield studied at the National Gallery School in the 1940s and turned to full time painting in 1965. RMIT printamking. He has won several art awards, including the Ramsay Prize - NGV School, the Redcliffe and in 1980 the Eltham Prize. Armfield is represented in the National Gallery collection, Art Gallery of NSW, Tasmanian Art Gallery, several regional art galleries across Australia as well as private collections. David Armfield first came to Eltham in the late 1903s on painting trips and used to camp on the banks of the Diamond Creed. He returned to Eltham in 1957 with his wife Joan who has subsequently become one of the district's potters, and built a mud brick house and studio in John Street on land adjoining Peter Glass. He has painted many landscapes in the district including intimate studies of the bush floor and the aftermath of bush fires.'Untitled' by David Armfield an oil on canvas painting depicts sand, sea, distant mountains and various figures scattered about in a typical Armfield landscape. The figures tend to be annonymous, sometimes included more to establish the scale than for a narrative purpose. The figures are well clothed and it could be assumed that it is not a hot summer's day. Wayne Alfred is a member of the Namgis Tribe of the Kwakwaka'wakw people. As a master carver he has an extremely high level of carving skill and knowledge about his peoples cultural objects, customs, tribal stories and legends. The Totem Poles of the North Pacific Coast in British Columbia and Alaska are traditionally carved out of red or yellow cedar, which has a spiritual and practical purpose. The wood was known for its durability, its resistance to rotting and the inner bark was utilised in ropemaking, clothing, hats, baskets and so forth. The Kwakitul People consider the cedar tree to be among the most sacred of all things provided by the Creator. They believed the Cedar tree to be the axis of the world and a pathway to the upper world. The wood is shaped using implements such as adzes, axes, chisels, carving knives, and chainsaws. Misinterpreted as Gods and idols to be worshipped, totems usually serve six purposes, such as a house pillar for support, a memorial or mortuary pole to commemorate (and house) the deceased, a potlatch pole (used for important traditional indigenous celebrations), a ridicule pole used to shame and a heraldic or family crest pole. Characters and symbols on these totem poles usually display family crests, history, wealth, social rank, inheritance, and privilege, as well as animalistic imagery derived from native animals and mythological creatures. Their sequence are indicative of past family events, ancestors, myths, and heraldic crests, with the bottom figure usually being the most prominent. In this work the 'thunderbird' is symbolic of power, strength and of ancestory. The Commonwealth Games Totem Pole was presented to the people of Nillumbik on behalf of the Canadian Government in recognition of Melbourne as the hosts of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games Team in 2006. Carved in cedar wood, this totem pole incorporates bold cuts and colours (such as red and green) offset by strong black. A relative degree of realism is used to depict the alligator located on the bottom of the pole, a man and a 'thunderbird'/eagle located on the top. With protuding element. No inscriptions. Eltham was a creative hub during the twentieth century, attracting innovative visual artists, architects, writers and film makers to collaborate, forging lifelong friendships and artistic legacies. Skipper produced this bronze sculpture of friend, Composer George Dreyfus for the then Shire of Eltham Art Award. Matcham Skipper (b.1921 NZ - d. 2011 Melb.) was a renowned local sculptor, jeweller and builder and an accomplished teacher, designer, ironworker, and photographer. His work is held by many museums and public collections in Australia and overseas. He was a long term resident of Montsalvat in Eltham with his family deeply involved in the building and evolution of this artists colony, which was the vision of architect and painter Justus Jorgensen. George Dreyfus (b.1928 Germany - arrived 1939 Aus) is an Australian contemporary classical, film and television composer. He has composed numerous film and television scores, including Tim Burstall's 'The Adventures of Sebastian the Fox' (1963), 'A Steam Train Passes' (1974), 'Rush' (1974), 'Dimboola' (1979) and 'The Fringe Dwellers' (1986). It was the score for 'Rush' which brought him wider recognition. He has written four operas, two symphonies, chamber music and film scores spanning five decades. Dreyfus is well known for having worked with the late director, writer and producer Tim Burstall, a key figure in Australian postwar cinema and local who lived in Eltham. Burstall was instrumental in rebuilding the Australian film industry in the 60s, creating groundbreaking Australian films including 'Stork' and 'Alvin Purple'. This drawing has a link to another of Wegner's work in the Collection, the lithograph 'Mandarin on a Kitchen Table'. This portrait is of Danny Moynihan, one time lecturer at Phillip Institute of Technology (now RMIT - Bundoora campus) who taught Wegner printmaking (lithography) when he was a student at the institute in the 80's. Informal 12 hole golf event, played on Grand Final weekend. This event was started by a group of friends when there were few official golf tournaments played at Peterborough. The event was a stroke event with "mystery handicaps" ie you didn't know your handicap until you finished playing. The event was played on the Sunday of Grand Final weekend (except initially); Friday night traditionally was tea at Boggy Creek Pub and a Fishing Comp on Saturday. The name came about because three of the regular players, Ivan Voss, Bob Loader and R. McKendrick had a hut at the top of the dunes near Crofts Bay. They had a clinker boat on the beach as well. They subsequently built a house in Childers St. It ceased when the original participants were no longer able to play. The date of the first winner is 1980, last recorded winner is 1995. The quilt, alternatively known as a wagga due to its improvised nature of creation, was made by Harry Walter Hewitt Wilton (great grandfather of donor), b.1872, d.1950. Harry joined the Essex Regiment and served in the British Military in India, as well as seeing action in the Boer War. Married wife Mary Elizabeth in India in 1895, she was a seamstress. Harry was injured during a battle and made this quilt as part of his rehabilitation. Quilt was made using woolen army singlets. Harry and Mary moved to Victoria, near Orbost, in 1914. Patchwork style quilt with coloured pieces of dyed woolen singlets stitched together over a backing. Features feather stitching between pieces and around border edges. These wool undervests were purchased by Edith Bender for her husband Edwin, prior to 1963. Edwin would catch a ‘Red Rattler’ train along the North Shore line to go to work in Pitt Street., Sydney. Edith was concerned Edwin would catch a cold in the unheated train or in his unheated office, so she brought these woollen undervests for him to wear to work. Edwin would wear the undervests under a woollen suit and with a woollen overcoat. Edwin passed away in 1963, at which point Edith stored the undervests away. They were passed to Edith’s daughter when Edith passed away in 1980. They were then passed to Tanya Davis on the death of her mother. Tanya donated the undervests to the National Wool Museum in 2021.2x cream wool undervests. Henley style with short sleeves and three buttons at the front. Labels from the maker ‘Braemar’ have been stitched to the neckline of both vests. An additional label is stitched under the first button on the front of both undervests.
