In 1860 Smeaton residents appealed for funds to establish a school. Patrick Curtain, and his co-workers raised more than £150 plus a land grant (Allot A, Sect 2, Township of Smeaton). Head Teacher John Forbes, with assistant Zillah North, opened a timber school building which measured 36ftx18ft (11.0x5.5m) on 1 September 1861 with 44 children. Rising enrolment to 65 in 1868 made building alterations necessary. During 1870-1 a residence of four rooms was supplied and in October 1882 a 20ftx18ft (6.1x5.5m) classroom. In 1907 a new brick building accommodated 122 children. Among notable ex-pupils are Major-General Bridgeford, Frank Wright ( Musical Director of the London County Council), Alex Wright, (AKA singer Andre Navarre), and Les Brooks. (Visions and Realisations) In 2013 it was announced that Smeaton Primary School would close. The Hepburn advocate reported: "A Department of Education spokesman has confirmed the Smeaton Primary School council recently voted unanimously to recommend the school close at the end of the year. The school currently has 12 students with enrollments dwindling during the past few years and no prep students to its boost numbers or its future. The school’s imminent closure comes as the Smeaton community gears up for the town’s 175th anniversary which will be celebrated later this year. Urquhart Street Primary School was opened on 09 December 1878 by the Minister of Public Instruction, Major William Collard Smith. A meeting was called Sept.1882, the first outcome of this meeting, was to advertised for, Friday 12th October 1882 from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm in the Mechanic's Institute. He served in the Australian Corp Signals in WWII both in Australia and overseas. He was born at Womerah on 9/11/1906 and died at Koo Wee Rup 16/06/1984. Murray Comrie Collection. There were four banks in Tarnagulla at one stage, but two - the National Bank and the Bank of Australasia - were open for a short period only. The single-storey brick building at far left was built in 1859 and used by the Union Bank until 1888, and was later renamed 'Lochcarron' and used as premises by doctors and dentists. The two-storey building (right) was built in 1866 by the Colonial Bank of Australasia. Before this, the site had been occupied by Foo's shop. Whilst it was being built, the Colonial Bank operated from Company's Hotel (later known as Burstall Hall and the Council Chambers). The double-storey building in this image was used by the Colonial Bank from 1866 until 21st February, 1888. The premises were sold to the Union Bank for £2500. The Union Bank moved in and commenced operations on 6th June 1888, continuing until 1942. The building was later used as a general store until the 1990s. Both buildings are now private residences. This is a reasonable copy of an older original. Copy probably made by Murray Comrie in the 1970s. The Ballarat Camp housed the Goldfields administrators. It was from this site that the troopers left on the morning of 3 December 1854 to attack the Eureka Stockade. The brick building was constructed in 1911/1912 and replaced an earlier school building. In 1942/43 the school building was extended to cope with the increased population in Sunbury. The State School remained on the Macedon Street site until 1999 when it was relocated to the restored former Industrial School at Jacksons Hill.A coloured photograph of the former Sunbury State School No. 1002. There are two stepped brick chimneys with terracotta chimney pots and six air vents protruding from the roof.
