The five women photographed with were travelling to Greece by ship and are picture with the captain. On the left are Athena Sikiotis, her mother Chrisoula Sikiotis (nee Kallinikos) and cousin Penelope Kallinikos (Billiter). The 1960s saw more and more first and second generation Ithacans travelling to Greece to visit the island to reunite or meet family. Up until the 1970s travel to and from Europe was mainly by ship and took around one month. During the 1970s air travel gradually became the norm. The two young women are cousins, left Katerini Paxinos Lekatsas (Lucas), and Marigo Kekatos (Boura). They migrated to Australia from Ithaca in early twentieth century. Cream cotton doyley (doiley) crocheted by either Elsie Nolting (nee Fraser) or her cousin May Rose (nee Bennett) both of Charlton Victoria. The item was made around 1918 as a dedication to the success of the allies in the First World War. Doyley is crocheted in a treble stitch, edged with clear glass beads. This petticoat dress was sewn by Mrs. van den Heuvel and her friend M/s Jos Tersteeg for Marjo van den Heuvel to wear under a white dress on the occasion of her cousin Peter Beeker's First Holy Communion.The material was obtained from one of the many parachutes that became available during the Allied offensive of 1944/45. This material was very welcome after the deprivations suffered during the 5 year German occupation. Petticoat to be worn under child's white First Communion dress, made of white parachute silk sewn in extremely tiny stitches by machine and hand.
