The photograph has recorded rail smash which occurred at Sunbury on 17th April 1919 when a stock train crashed into a goods train. It caused a lot of damage to the rolling stock and blocked rail traffic on the Bendigo and Maryborough lines. These medals were awarded to A317006 Leading Aircraftman Duncan Glen McNair, Royal Australian Air Force who served in Vietnam from the 20th February 1970 - 20th July 1970. Sadly Duncan Glen McNair died in a helicopter crash while on air operations on the 20th July 1970.Four replica medals are placed horizontally on a single line of a black board that sits on a black stand. Circa WW2 1940 - 1945. Used for RAAF Trainee pilots for Wirraway and Tiger Moth training. This helmet belonged to Francis Robertson, trainee RAAF Pilot who crashed his aircraft into Nurse Carter's residence at Chiltern (May 30th, 1943) whilst on a training flight from Advanced Training Squadron Deniliquin NSW. The Helmet is associated with Francis Robertson WW2 RAAF Pilot, trained at Number 7 Flying School Deniliquin NSW. Khaki Canvas and metal helmet used in WW2 circa 1943 for trainee pilots of Wirrway's and Tiger moths. Made of sturdy heavy duty canvas with some metal underlay, leather and sheepskin straps, brass attachment buckles. This flag was flying at the Wodonga Station when VR Driver John (Jack) Bowden drove past it whilst at the controls of the “Southern Aurora” on 7 February 1969. The Sydney – Melbourne passenger train was bound for Melbourne. At about 7.05 a.m. the “Southern Aurora” collided head-on with the Melbourne-Albury goods train near Violet Town. 8 people lost their lives in the crash and 117 were injured. Driver John Bowden had died of cardiac arrest at some time before the collision. The driver of the goods train, Lawrence Rosevear, a good friend and workmate of Jack Bowden had tried to apply the brake when he realised the Aurora was not slowing down, but was unable to stop the impact. Lawrence also died in the crash. A memorial is maintained at Violet Town to commemorate those who died and also recognised those who helped in the aftermath of the tragedy.This flag is connected to the "Southern Aurora" train tragedy in 1969A large blue flag bearing the gold insignia of Victorian Railways. The POW describes how he got home to Austria in Dec 1946 and the conditions there. With the letter was a small hand made model aeroplane, refer Cat No 5786. The letter was to Allan Frederick Goodall DFC, RAAF, refer Cat No 543.2 for his service details. David Thomas Andrew No 400247 enlisted in the RAAF on 21.7.40. During a bombing run by No 11 Sqd on Meiktila in central Burma on 5.4.43 two of the Sqd's Blenheim Bombers collided and subsequently crashed. Warrant Officer Andrew was killed. Leaving Point Cook airbase conducting a low visibility cross-country flight at 11.05 am on 12 April 1942 an A25 Airspeed Oxford crashed 5 kilometres from Beech Forest. The pilot, Sergeant T.W. Penn, and two pupils, LAC R.E. Johnston and LAC J.R. Black, were killed. The Tesselated Tile company began in 1886 under the Wiseman brothers. At the beginning only bricks and stoneware pipes were manufactured. Mr E. E. Walker was engaged as manager and good progress was made until 1893 when the banks crashed. This business was a survivor and by the end of the 1890's the manufacture of tiles had begun. A Control Joy Stick presented to Pilot Officer Eric V. Read in 1937 after it was recovered from an aircraft he was flying had crashed in the Brisbane Ranges in December 1936. Eric Read was a 21 year old RAAF pilot who was on a flight over the Bacchus Marsh region to make meteorological observations. Read's plane came down in bad weather and crashed into a heavily wooded area of the Brisbane Ranges between Staughton Vale and Mount Wallace. An extensive air and ground search was conducted and after 32 hours Read was located, alive, but badly injured and unable to get out of the cockpit of the plane. He was first located from the air and then a rescue party was able to reach him through rough country and bring him to safety. Read recovered from his injuries and many years later gifted the control stick of the aircraft he had been flying as an item for the collection of the Bacchus Marsh and District Historical Society.This item is of local historical significance as an object related to a notable aircraft accident and subsequent rescue of the pilot. A41 Centurion Main Battle Tank.This tank carried a crew of four - a Commander, Gunner, Loader and driver. It was powered by a Rolls Royce V12 Meteor petrol engine and it had a top speed of about 34 kph. It had a 5 speed crash box transmission and drum brakes. There was a twenty pounder main gun and two machine guns. This tank has been fitted with items that were used in Vietnam as well as the items carried by crews for their own comfort. These items cover the four tours by Centurion MBT in Vietnam - C Sqn, B Sqn, A Sqn & C Sqn, who served two tours. Most tanks also carried several stretchers, mainly for use of the infantry. There was an enormous crash and Crafty thought he had finally squashed the Dogtor but he was not harmed when the great stone fell, using his stethoscope to open the door. Crafty was hiding behind a shed in the yard waiting for the dust to settle. The Dogtor used his teeth to catch Crafty by the end of his tail but Crafty twisted and escaped through an opening in the back fence. Frecker carried out 7 sorties before joining the unit and 21 successful sorties with his squadron making a total of 179.4 hours operational flying. He was attacked and badly damaged by a night fighter on 12 April 1942, after attacking Essen. He brought his aircraft home and successfully crash-landed away from base without causing injury to his crew. Typed copy of recount by Albert Richardson of a fire at Unity Mine on Tuesday 8-10-1907. Report from the Bendigo Advertiser Wednesday October 9th 1907. The Nunawading orchard was purchased in 1920 by Mary Lilian Matheson from Florence Rebecca Course for a sum of 1050 Sterling Pound. In 1988 the Federal & State government allocated $125,000 to the Nunawading Council towards the purchase of the house, outbuildings and the orchard facing Springvale Road, as it was representative of one of the last working orchards in the Nunawading district. The property has now been vacant for many years (2011) and is secured with window bars and security services. Produced by Camberwell depot staff to mark the 80th anniversary of the depot - 1929 to 2009. Has the letter of the depot printed on the front of the depot. Metal badge has the name of the depot as well as "V" and "80". On the inside of the card explains the basis of the depots timetable or run number letter V, because it was located in the Vee formed by Riversdale and Camberwell Roads. The second card notes that the depot is not in Camberwell but Hawthorn East and that there are no numbers on the rear wall after a tram crashed through it in the early 1970s. Whitmuir Hall was built 1850 using bricks hand -made from the clay of nearby Elster Creek. Early history of the 156 acre estate bounded by McKinnon, Centre, Thomas and Wheatley Roads is obscure. The gardens were laid out prior to 1850. Robert Gray Ford purchased 20 acres with mansion in 1872 for £ 1750 and it was valued at £ 25,000 in 1888 but sold after the Bank Crash 1890's for £ 5,000 in 1892. There were many owners over the years including Thomas Bent and in 1870 it was called 'Killearnan'. It is now is known as 'the Bentleigh Club and many original features have been restored and preserved . Whitmuir Hall, was a stately mansion built 1850 typical of the grandiose plans of successful early settlers.
