This photo shows a few of Legacy's disabled dependents on an outing to a bowling alley. Every month Legacy's handicapped dependents were invited to go on outing for take part in recreational and educational activities. These programmes aimed to develop independence and thus lessen the need for reliance on others for simple routine functions. Once a year there is a two week camp this also gave the mothers some respite. This mobility aid was housed under the old stage area of the Soldiers Memorial Institute building in Pall Mall Bendigo. When the renovations to the building began in late 2016 the Aid was removed and restored by the Bendigo District RSL Men in Sheds program and is now on display in the same building now called Bendigo Military Museum. The Soldiers Memorial was the HQ of the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch. It is not known the origin of the Aid but it was most likely used by disabled Bendigo RSL members post WW1.Three wheeled Mobility Aid. Front wheel is 41cm dia pneumatic, 32mm wide, rear wheel 68cm dia, width 52mm wide. The right wheel axle has a sprocket & chain assembly, the left is free wheeling, both have mud guards. Frame is tubular steel painted reddish colour, the seat and back rest are brown leather, seat sides are timber, there are two timber platforms in front, the top one is adjustable the bottom one is fixed. The chair is steered via a long metal handle fixed to the wheel frame. Excavating prior to the building of Melbourne Benevolent Society in Cheltenham. The Centre had begun life in 1850 in Melbourne, as the Victoria Benevolent Asylum to "relieve the aged, infirm, disabled and destitute poor of all creeds and nations and to minister to them the comfort of religion" It outgrew its North Melbourne premises so was located to a new site at Warrigal Road, Cheltenham. The foundation stone was laid in 1909, and the main buildings were completed in 1911. In 1970 the benevolent Asylum was re-named Kingston Centre. The photograph is black and white. Young men that had outgrown the activities that Legacy provided for junior boys formed the Intermediate Legacy Club (ILC) and they were active from 1929 to the 1970s. One of the activities the ILC undertook was to provide classes for children of incapacitated ex-servicemen. St Kilda Library was designed in 1971 by Enrico Taglietti (1926-2019). It was to be constructed in two stages. Stage 1 was completed in 1973. Stage 2 as designed by Taglietti did not proceed. Instead, alterations were designed in 1992-93 by Ashton Raggatt McDougall Architects (ARM). In 1993-94, the floor area of the library was enlarged to include a new entry and disabled ramp and a pedestrian thoroughfare between Carlisle and Duke streets. Every month Legacy's handicapped dependents are invited to go on outing for take part in recreational and educational activities. Once a year there is a two week camp, this is believed to be Somers School Camp. These photos are from 1992. An article in the widows' newsletter in 1992 explains more detail on the 1992 camp. The article mentions that the annual camps run for two weeks at Somers Camp. It is a wonderful gathering of Junior Legatees, Legatees, and dedicated helpers. 50 junior legatees attended this camp (in 1992) with the personal attention almost one-to-one. With ages ranging from 22 to into the 60s, Legacy has to ensure it caters for the differing needs. Legatees headed by Camp Chief, Jim Hammon and Chairman of the Handicapped Dependents Committee, Merv Tickell, were supported by two Camp Co-Ordinators and 50 helpers known as 'leaders'. Many of the leaders are people in the workforce wishing to give something back to the community. Junior Legatees are organised into groups. They participate in horse-riding, swimming, golfing, strawberry picking, and many other activities. A bronze bust was erected in Morwell to honour Legacy Founder Sir Stanley Savige. It was unveiled on 31 August 2006 and Legatee Bill Rogers was invited to perform the unveiling. This is the address he on the occasion. In 1957 a few years after Stan Savige died Legacy was looking after 25,200 widows and 18,900 children. In 2006 Legacy was looking after 126,000 widows and and 1,900 children and disabled dependants nationally. In Victoria it was 24,000 widows and 400 children.
